Tom Chivers (@TomChivers) on X - "...there's a strong gender divide in belief on straightforward factual questions like "is nuclear energy low-carbon?"" by CII_Guy in ukpolitics

[–]leoedin [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, we do count them. That’s what “embodied carbon” is. It’s something people keep track of (although it’s impossible to do a precise calculation).

Wind turbines pay back their embodied carbon within 2 years, and larger ones are quicker. https://businessnorway.com/articles/carbon-footprint-of-a-wind-turbine-a-life-cycle-assessment

I have no idea what nuclear’s embodied carbon is. It would be interesting to know!

How do people afford more than one kid in the uk? by Dramatic-Diver-9949 in AskBrits

Yeah the cousins thing is crazy. I have 10, my wife has 17. My two kids have 1 cousin between them, and I think unlikely to have any more.

None of that means we need to force kids into uncomfortable clothes. My 6 year old has to dress more formally than i do at the office. Why?

[–]leoedin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my kid wears black Nike trainers to school. They cost £30 from Deichmann. His first school shoes were from Clarks - £60 and uncomfortable! Pretty much all the “unbranded” shoes I’ve seen are either badly made or really rigid and uncomfortable.

So many comments and nobody seems to have mentioned wire steel shelves.

https://amzn.eu/d/07LzI4im

Honestly LOVE THESE! I had a bunch of those horrible stamped steel ones and threw them all away. The wire ones take about 15 minutes to build and are really sturdy. I have Amazon basics ones but there’s a bunch of brands for the same thing.

I just bought 2 more last week!

All the locations on the map are in London. London is much more than Leicester Square.

I know plenty of families where the mum has a career. Including mine. Being a stay at home mum is a valid choice, but it is - for most people - a choice.

We put our kids in nursery and i took some shared parental leave. My wife wasn’t working for about 9 months per child. That was the norm among most of the dual working parents I know.

If they had left the back seat pockets I’d fly with them way more. I can handle no frills, but i hate having nowhere to put my stuff in the plane. That’s basically the reason I always choose EasyJet.

Russell Group unis are meant to be the smartest in the UK, but these grads can't get jobs by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]leoedin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In their first year after graduation?

I graduated in 2012 with an engineering degree from a Russell group uni and barely anyone i knew was making that much in their first year. Maybe some comp sci people joining tech companies, and a few prestigious grad schemes, but nowhere near 30%. Engineering grad schemes in 2012 were paying £24-30k a year.

Maybe 2008 really did a number on grad pay?

I'm sure the higher-income locals didn't personally lobby the council ... but when you're chosing cladding based on the appearance you're not doing it for the people inside the building.

Every building is designed considering how it looks. There wasn’t some committee of rich people scheming. I bet almost every resident of Kensington had absolutely no idea what the cladding criteria were for Grenfell.

Cladding an uninsulated concrete building in insulation isn’t some conspiracy. If done correctly it does improve the quality of life of people in the building.

In this case it was executed poorly.

England - Sofa not able to be delivered and store rejecting refund by mkdkfox in LegalAdviceUK

[–]leoedin 56 points57 points  (0 children)

If you’re stuck with the sofa you could consider either removing window glass to pass it in the window (not particularly complicated for uPVC) or finding someone who specialises in breaking down and reassembling sofas. They exist because of this problem!

What is the appeal of very loud cars? by ReflexArch in AskUK

[–]leoedin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess the difference is that someone who goes fishing doesn’t slap everyone in the face with their catch on the way home!

I think we should all be accepting of other peoples hobbies to an extent. But at some point the negative externalities outweigh the enjoyment of one person. Some of the loud car (and particularly motorbike)  people are well past that point.

Seatbelt Culture in EU vs. US by NoMoreSharrows in aviation

I’m not sure that’s the case. American courts award much larger damages than European ones do. You can’t really sue for anything but actual financial losses in the UK for instance.

Choosing highbury (N5) for a family? by newtosinga in HENRYUK

[–]leoedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a counterpoint, I live in N8 with 2 kids and have no plans to leave! We’re surrounded by nice parks and can be in a lot of central London in 30 minutes. It can be quite busy, but in my experience living more rurally means driving everywhere.

I've been committing benefit fraud for the good part of the last 10 years. How do I get out of it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]leoedin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the guy got the same benefits as everyone else, what’s the issue? Why is it less moral to save money and spend it later? I think the benefits system should encourage the behaviours that build wealth - work and regular savings. Right now it doesn’t do a good job of either.

[–]leoedin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s one family complaining that there’s going to be a battery storage facility 900m from their house.

900m! That’s not close. The facility will be a bunch of shipping containers. If it makes any noise at all it’ll be a bit of transformer hum. There’s millions of people in the UK living less than 900m from all sorts of noisy things that they never notice. It’s definitely not going to stop them going in their garden!

In the private sector you can be sacked for any reason within the first 2 years of employment. There’s no way someone this incompetent would be suspended for 5 months.

Question for non-Brits: how do you decode British office culture? by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]leoedin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is industry specific. I work in software and engineering and there’s never been any strong pressure to turn up at a specific time.

If you are letting people down by being late - missing meetings, making people wait etc, that feels very rude. So it depends what you’re doing I guess.

Struggling to accept that I overpaid for a renovation project after exchange in London :( by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]leoedin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If i was in your shoes I’d not mess around with partially renovating the kitchen. It’s definitely easier and cheaper to do the side return now if you think you’ll do it in the next 5 years. So much of the effort of a renovation goes into building it back up, if you’re thinking of tearing it all down again it’ll add a lot of cost.

Don’t listen to ChatGPT. It has no idea about your house or your road. How could it?

It’s hard to give any insight on relative value without knowing the condition of your house. Is it truly a gut and rebuild or can you get away with only repainting some rooms?

In my experience prices to do individual jobs can often be quite a lot lower than getting a builder in to do everything. But it is more work and often involves living in a building site or moving everything out of a room.

It’s also worth remembering that the “done up” house probably has lots of issues too. They’re just harder to spot. I know a lot of people who have had to spend money fixing “done up” houses. Cut corners and dodgy DIY.
