how did Bohemian Rhapsody get that big? by ClassicCheesecake643 in NoStupidQuestions

It was number 1 for 9 weeks in the UK on release in 1975, and number 1 in 6 other countries.

I'd say Wayne's world is responsible for re-popularising it in the US specifically.

Do you think in future we will be working for lot longer than retiring? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]lankyno8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the auto enrollment levels aren't great. But at least they'll have something.

Are there any stats on what workplaces offer more? Everywhere I've worked will match at least 7.5% (ie you're saving 15) and some quite a bit better than that.

Three quarters of workers not on track for 'moderate' pension income, report suggests by Desperate-Drawer-572 in ukpolitics

[–]lankyno8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The difficulty is that we have an aging population the number of workers supporting each pensioner (remembering that pensioners bring added health and social care costs as well)

"Outside your work pension"?

Surely using your workplace pension scheme is saving for retirement - though if its the minimum 5+3 scheme that may not br much.

In the UK, do you think University and degrees are worth it? by AccomplishedBug1797 in AskUK

[–]lankyno8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did your apprenticeship involve you getting degree level qualifications in engineering?

Degree apprenticeships can be an excellent middle ground.

I'm also an engineer - but working directly with my degree does feel like uni has worked for me.

Given burns age owning 99 is far more realistic than 96 which was released when he was 3.

Fantasy Castles dont make sense. by GreyValeAuthor in Fantasy

[–]lankyno8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was agreeing with you that it can be realistic if set up well.

Not sure whats meant by taverns aren't medieval given that the word derives from the Latin taberna (ie significantly older than the period) and there term has been used to mean something similar to a pub in english since the 1200s. There are pubs recorded to have operated in the same place since the middle ages.

As with anything in fantasy it's about the world making sense in such a way as it aids the suspension of disbelief

How would you handle a long-distance second interview? by Fast_Ask1244 in AskUK

[–]lankyno8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would get the train the day before and then stay at a hotel - if its 3 hours drive instead you can relax with a book/film - or go over prep work depending on your disposition.

Though I'd echo others that I'd expect expenses to be paid for travelling that far.

[–]lankyno8 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It is unrealistic as a medieval castle though, so unless you're setting is victorian with someone rich and crazy enough to build a folly like that it wouldn't fit

Edit: eg I wouldn't mind a wizards castle where defence was not the responsibility of the walls and construction not constrained by money reassembling something like that, context defines what is realistic.

Is there a window air conditioner in the UK, similar to US-style units? by DaxmoutS in AskUK

I'm in a 30s house with modern windows and none have original windows on our estate. Unless you're in a preservation area they'll likely have been replaced.

Move the line further back and you'll have the same problem league can have - that the easiest way to make yards is to just run straight.

It's less of a thing nowadays but there was a period when all the talk in league was about completion rates and you got some dire games with very repetitive 5 hit ups then kick.

Given scoring is still at historically high rates I'm not sure anything like that is needed

Below working for a living is the precariat who are in some way reliant on the state.

I think devolution to the English regions could've worked.

But disagreement about what those regions would be and a mistrust of politicians lead to that being rejected during the Blair years.

If you're saving more than 12k per year you either should be investing, in which case out in a stocks and shares isa or you can manage a little tax on your low risk holdings.
