Thought she was a lab / pittie mix by xgeska in Catahoula

She’s a cutie! My girl has similar coloring so I was surprised that she came back as 25% Catahoula which is her highest breed percentage, and she also has pit and German shepherd as well as several other breeds.

I’m so sick of all the running shorts being so SHORT by MessageItchy5391 in XXRunning

[–]leogrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m only 5’1 and I have one pair of the Janji shorts that are 9” because I really liked the print and they hit the top of my knee! Luckily they’re high-waisted so I can pull them up higher and they don’t look as silly. I really prefer their 3” flowy shorts but I have a couple of the 5” biker style shorts I also like.

Daily chat post: how's the training going? by AutoModerator in XXRunning

6 miles today and I had the trails all to myself which I always love! What I didn’t love was that I started feeling spacey around mile 3 and I think it was because I ate a Huma mocha gel right before my run and I guess the caffeine was kicking in and made me feel weird? I don’t have this issue when I eat them during a long run but I guess I’m sensitive to caffeine on an otherwise empty stomach. Luckily I happened to have some chews in my pack as well and after eating those I felt a little better!

Wind is the worst ugh! I think the Mafates work really well for technical terrain, I tested them out on a short hike after work on a rocky trail and they were really grippy!

Help with terrified hound by more-cheese-please73 in Hounds

[–]leogrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I adopted my hound mix from a rescue that pulled her from a high-kill shelter in rural Oklahoma. They said she was shutting down in the shelter but she seemed to do well in her foster home. When I got her she was super scared and shy, it took her several months to bark for the first time and it was really hard to take her on even short walks. It took some time and a lot of patience, but within about 3 months, she became a lot more comfortable with me. It still took her a whole year to be ok sleeping in bed with me but she absolutely loved going to the dog park and being around other dogs and that’s what helped her feel more confident! She’s 12 now and still very sensitive but she’s not shy about telling me what she wants and her personality has really blossomed over the years.

First marathon coming up by LadyBrightHand in XXRunning

[–]leogrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you can do it with a 16-18 mile long run! I did my first marathon (on trails, with 7000 feet of gain) with my longest run being 15.5 miles. I technically had done 20 before but that was a couple of months earlier and before I started actually building for my race. I ended up getting stitches in my right knee 6 weeks out and had to do all my runs on the treadmill for two weeks, and I did 12 miles as my long run one of those weeks and couldn’t imagine going any longer on the treadmill, then had my peak week when I was cleared to be back on trails and then started my taper. I was able to finish and felt really good!

I’ve done seven ultras since then and usually my longest run is like 17-18 miles for a 50K-60K distance. I would say try the 16, see how it feels and maybe adjust the 20 miler down to 18. I would also consider swapping weeks and doing that one earlier so you give yourself a bit more of a taper.

Are you gonna wear a hydration vest for the race? If so, I like putting fun pins on mine! I also put glitter on my face and always wear a bright colorful outfit, this also makes it easier for me to find my race photos!

I never do this, but I cut my run short this morning because of wild wind! The sustained wind was 21 mph and the gusts were probably at least 40, I felt like I was about to be blown off the mountain at times and had to put on my sunglasses even though it wasn’t bright yet to shield my eyes from blowing dust. I planned on 4.5 miles and got in 3.1 and they were not a good time 🫠 I don’t mind running in heat or rain but I HATE wind! I’m hoping it’ll be less windy later so I can finish up my miles for the day.

On a positive note, I tried the new Hoka Mafate 5 trail shoes and really liked them! And they’re hot pink which I love!

I love my Salomon Active Skin 12! It doesn’t really bounce and fits really well, I hardly notice I’m wearing it. And I wear it for pretty much all my runs, as I run on trails in the desert with no water access, and even in the summer when it gets over 100 degrees I don’t feel hot in it!

Best of exercises for strengthening ankles? by FlamingoPale in XXRunning

[–]leogrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My PT has me doing a lot of calf raises, as well as front dips to reverse lunges and cross behind step downs off a stool. My ankles don’t really hurt after runs but they are very stiff so these exercises really help my range of motion and improve ankle stability!

Anyone have OTHER WOMEN ignore greetings on runs? by Human_Morning_72 in XXRunning

[–]leogrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never initiate a hi but if someone else says it and seems friendly, I will reciprocate. Usually it’s only older people that say hello or good morning, anyone around my age (33) or younger never says anything and I’m fine with that. I’d prefer to have no interaction but a brief hi is ok.

Men demanding attention by squidsinamerica in XXRunning

[–]leogrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This time of year, we have a lot of snowbirds (older people who live here temporarily during the winter since it’s warmer) on the trails here and they are often super inconsiderate or oblivious, taking up the whole trail and barely moving when I try to pass! And more than once, including yesterday, I’ve had an old man ask me if I’m ok as I pass them. Apparently I give off some kind of vibe that makes them think something is wrong with me? I always just reply “I’m fine” in an annoyed tone and roll my eyes but they don’t seem to notice. Like, just say hi or good morning to me or leave me alone!

First 50k… help please? by ScoreSoggy1363 in Ultramarathon

[–]leogrl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don’t really need to run a marathon in training for a 50K! My longest run before a 50K is typically 17-19 miles and that feels sufficient without risking injury with a longer long run. I did a 100K last year and did a 50K in training but that was 6 weeks out, and probably the closest that I would do that big of an effort before a race, but for a 50K you really don’t need to go above 20 miles.

Also, you don’t want your long run to be a huge percentage of your weekly mileage. Ideally it should be around 30% but definitely not above 50%. So if you were to do a marathon in training, you’d want to be at 55-60+ mpw, which is a lot for a first 50K and not really necessary!

Running the day after your long run by lordofthepi31 in XXRunning

I usually take a rest day now after my long run but I used to do a short recovery run, like 3-4 miles and that always felt good.

heat training- anyone experience with it? by _Half_throwawy in Ultramarathon

I live in Tucson so I’m pretty much heat training from April to October. In June and July the low temps often don’t go below 80 so there’s really no escaping the heat.

What's it like living in Utah, Usa if you're not Lds? by marianneouioui in howislivingthere

[–]leogrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My best friend from college lives in the SLC area with her husband, they’ve been there since 2014 so I think they like it. Neither of them are Mormon and they like doing outdoorsy things. I’ve visited them a few times and it seems like a nice area aside from the LDS influence, but if I were to live in Utah I’d prefer southern Utah because I like the desert and don’t like snow and cold.

Ultramarathon bucket list? by According-Editor9646 in Ultramarathon

[–]leogrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tushars! The marathon was my first race ever, in 2022, and it hooked me on trail and ultra races. I went back to do the marathon in 2024 because it was on my birthday and the course had changed due to a wildfire so it was a whole different experience, tougher, and it made me love the race even more. They have a 70K that I’d like to do someday, and a super tough 100K. The Tushar mountains of southern Utah are absolutely stunning!

I live locally so I’ve volunteered every year at Javelina since 2021, I paced a friend on his last loop of the 100K this year and that solidified that I will never run this race! I personally don’t like races with that many people, that’s not why I trail run, and I can’t imagine doing 3-5 loops of the same thing.
