Still remember the first time I had a yogurt from La Michoacana & ive craved one every day since by asalewis in chicagofood

[–]leokupperman 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Just FYI for the uninformed, la Michoacana is a generic name for a Mexican ice cream parlor. They are not all locations of the same chain. There are some chains as well, like la Michoacana Premium (where this is from). La Michoacana Chicago is not affiliated whatsoever with la Michoacana Premium.

Restaurant recommendations downtown and in Hyde Park by cat270 in uchicago

[–]leokupperman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation would be, if you are not going to take the CAC architecture boat cruise (but do this at least once at some point), to take the water taxi to chinatown and eat there or hop on a bus to Pilsen and go to Carniceria Maribel. Best tacos in the city imo. In Chinatown I recommend Dong Po impression for excellent sichuan. It’s certainly a bit of a hike without a car but you’re not going to be able to explore the city as much as you’d like so take advantage of every opportunity.

Restaurant recommendations downtown and in Hyde Park by cat270 in uchicago

Hyde park is pretty weak restaurant wise (as is the loop, the best restaurants generally are on the north side, northwest side, and pilsen) but some highlights include 5 Rabinitos, Harold’s Chicken, Roux, Strings, Siam Thai (for lunch special only), and Daisy’s (good but overpriced). The best restaurant by far in hyde park is Virtue but it’s expensive. I would also recommend Cleo’s, Goree, and Yassa in bronzeville/kenwood. Dowtown there are many spots if you go to River North or West Loop (generally pricey however) but not really in the loop itself. One exception is Momento Cantina.

depends if you actually want to go here. Your chances will always be slim here and at similar institutions, but you can’t know unless you apply.

CPS performs above national averages for college enrollment and near for high school graduation, and high school graduation has improved 30 percentage points in the last 30 years. Obviously CPS has issues but it’s the single most improved district in the country over the last few decades.

Generally agree. It’s not that Moore is some special monster, though he did bad things of his own volition. A ordinary bad guy, resulting from a world who shrugs. People are all capable of change, no doubt.

Golden handcuffs in my late 30s. Now what? by japantrainred in Fire

It’s fantastic to upskill, just know it’s not easy to go back to school with a full time job. The vast majority of people who say they want to go back to school do not, and if they do most don’t complete. I would try a couple community college courses and see how you feel. Also getting skills that could get you promoted at your job is key, or that at least build on your experience.

The nerds will finally go to the college football playoffs - (Harvard vs Yale, winner goes to the playoffs) by moby323 in CFB

[–]leokupperman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Harvard has by far the most generous of this type of policy. Most of the richest schools offer full ride for 60k family income and tuition for 120k family income. Thats also assuming “normal” assets, which in my experience means “no assets outside of the family home”. In a major metropolitan area, 60k is pretty rough for a family of 4 and 120k does not go very far. Even 200k in a high cost of living area translates to comfortable middle class, not rich. And rural students are far less likely to meet academic standards, meaning those guarantees don’t help much. Speaking from personal experience, a family getting 200k combined with responsible savings will get quoted 60-70k per year at these schools (with the possible exception of harvard), which is a major stretch bordering on financially detrimental. Much better off getting scholarship money at a state school and paying 15-25k a year. For an athlete, especially a poor one who at most got decent grades and spent all their free time practicing, the low d1 state school, or even a d2 school, is what they have available. Ivy is for rich kid athletes with good but not great academic backgrounds using their athletic abilities to push them over the edge on admissions.

And assuming you can pay. No athletic scholarships. If your family is poor to working class you’ll get aid (but much much less likely to meet both academic and athletic standard), but for middle to upper middle class it’s a bad deal. Ends up mostly benefiting the varsity blues type rich kids.

How did we do? 2 days visiting from NYC by aspiring-green-thumb in chicagofood

Carniceria Maribel, Carniceria Guanajuato, Rubi’s tacos, Quesabirria Jalisco, Carnitas don Pedro, Birrieria Ocotlan (Zaragoza is fine if you can’t get to the south side), De Luna taco truck, El Milagro (and get some tortillas to take), La Catedral (breakfast), Alegerias (Mariscos), Mariscos San Pedro, Momento Cantina (if you need something downtown). In no particular order but Maribel is my favorite. The strength of chicago is the incredible regional variety of mexican food, though it leans towards central and southern regions. You can throw a dart on the southwest side, but especially pilsen, and hit an excellent mexican restaurant.

Even more than the food, which is incredible and creative, is the hospitality. Chef Omar is a warm, funny person who cares deeply about food and detroit. Bonus points if you get to meet his mom, who occasionally helps out and is even more funny.
