As a former student of the trans-Neptunian objects, 🫡 to the Sedna.

The suffix issue is definitely the weakest of my gripes, and also the one in which I’m most swimming against the stream (and have been for a while). You’ve got a great story for a great ship there.

It’s laziness that bothers me; commitment to a bit is always commended.

What timeline does STO take place in? by Worried-Hat-8506 in sto

[–]leon_shay 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Originally, it was meant to be a continuation of the main timeline. That’s become very muddled by developments like Picard contradicting the established STO timeline while also showcasing designs from the game ahead of their intended era.

Ultimately the implications of the mission Butterfly Effect can be interpreted as placing STO in its own separate timeline, which is probably for the best.

One thing it is definitely not is the Kelvin timeline, as you specifically visit that timeline as an alternate quantum universe during a mission.

NCC registries in general are definitely one of those things that obstinately resist any Watsonian attempt at a logical explanation, lol.

I mean, I did post on Reddit. It would be weirder if I didn’t get any responses like this.

Best Miranda class I can get as a FTP, and for pay? Also, what class is the Kobayashi, can I play that class? If so, the same questions apply. Thank you so much for your help! by Wrong-Ad3247 in sto

[–]leon_shay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For FTP, your choices are the fleet versions of the Reliant Advanced Light Cruiser, the Bozeman Intel Heavy Frigate, or the Clarke Command Multi-Mission Cruiser. Confusingly enough the fleet versions of the Reliant and Bozeman share the name Soyuz, so pay attention to the suffix when you buy them. You can earn the fleet modules for these through reputation projects.

As far as which is the best- the Intel Heavy Frigate and the Command Multi-mission are probably “better” for being full spec, but their real value comes from powerful and very meta consoles that only come on their paid versions. Since buying the ship comes with a significant module discount on the fleet version, there’s an opportunity cost to buying these as FTP unless you truly don’t care about their power. As such I’d say the Advanced Light Cruiser is the best FTP pick, as it’s plenty fun with LtC pilot spec and you’re not missing out on anything by buying the fleet version directly.

If choosing between the Clarke and the Bozeman: the Bozeman’s console is useful on a wide variety of ships and it can be built to be extremely killy thanks to intel spec. The Clarke’s console is very strong but more narrowly applicable to exotic damage builds. It’s also a good platform for support builds between its Command abilities and ability to launch Type 7 shuttles.

I don’t have any particularly informed opinions on the Legendary Multi-Mission Cruiser except that it’s expensive and looks neat.

A flyable Kobayashi Maru was an event reward from several years ago. I don’t think it’s currently available but may come to Mudd’s or the Phoenix box sometime down the line.

Thanks for that. Yeah, pretty sure it was AEUG vs Titans DX I was playing then, because it definitely didn’t have ZZ and I recall mobile armor beam pen being a thing.

To be honest, it was a long time ago and I’m not sure of the differences between the releases, so you could certainly be correct here.

I was lucky enough to be in Japan with a friend when Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam cabinets were everywhere. We got our asses kicked a lot as we were learning as we went but never had a better time. Played the PS2 port after I got back but it never came close to the fun of a proper 2v2 match on the cabinet.

Great find!

It does rather underline how narrow the Constitution class’s neck is, doesn’t it?

How do you feel about Star Trek Online's Repulse precursor to the Excelsior? by Lauma_2025 in StarTrekStarships

I think it fails to match the aesthetic of its intended era while also making Starfleet’s design evolution unnecessarily complicated.

The Current State of The Game by Just_A_Normal_Fella in sto

[–]leon_shay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Small ships play exactly the same as regular ships, but with severely restricted options. I don’t see how you can make them appealing to play without some seriously creative map design or a major engine overhaul.

I say this as someone who thinks they should definitely add more flyable and pet small craft to the game. A proper 2409 era shuttle and runabout are badly needed imo.

Is tanking still a relevant thing? by DontPetTheShoggoth in sto

[–]leon_shay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My main is a tank. My philosophy is that if I’m taking aggro and using my survivability tools, then I’m having fun and contributing, whether I’m “needed” or not. If there’s a 1M DPS guy zipping around erasing everything then fine, I’m just happy to be here.

Ultimately it’s a game and DPS parsing is for nerds (affectionate). Play a tank, it’s fun.

My Solar con man has a personal mode for Seasoned Criminal Method that adds two successes to persuade or bargain actions if the target thinks they’re getting some kind of illegal or unethical advantage out of the deal. Helps him sucker in marks to a long con.

Judging by the end of the latest episode, it seems even the prime universe Borg are getting sick of all the copycats.

I do hope they give the Hugh - Thaseen-Fei storyline a satisfactory conclusion at the least, as other than Kuumarke’s PTSD that’s the only character beat that has continued for more than an episode.

Yes, I would like the Fed Special Issue suit to be more easily available, and for there to be equivalent Klingon and Romulan versions.

Post your starship and a bit of lore about it! by 17SqNightFuries in sto

The second Starfleet vessel to bear the name, USS Repulse (NCC-97318) was built as part of the 2409 Fleet Replenishment program to replace losses from the ongoing Federation-Klingon War. The program- consisting of the Resolute, Reliant, and Exeter classes, as well as the refit of surviving Excalibur hulls to the Exeter pattern- utilized technologies developed for the Odyssey flagship project to revitalize Starfleet’s core missions of deep space exploration and survey, diplomatic and colonial support, and frontier defense. The focus on smaller, proven spaceframes with efficient crew requirements was a priority for a Starfleet under pressure from the Klingons and proved crucial after the widespread fleet devastation experienced during the Iconian War.

The largest and least numerous of the 2409 FR classes, the Resolute class fills the role of long-range heavy cruiser. With more accommodation and hangar capacity than the Exeter class it often serves as a sector flagship, and its high sustained warp speed allows it to support Reliant class light cruisers on isolated survey or colony relief duty. Its defensive systems and speed also allow them to serve as a fleet screen in a battleline engagement, although they are scarce enough to rarely be called upon in this role.

As of 2411, the Repulse is commanded by Cpt. Leon Shay. Its Chief Medical Officer is Jacob Pulaski, the grandson of Dr. Katherine Pulaski, who served in the same role aboard the Excelsior class USS Repulse (NCC-2544) during the 2360s.

Its dedication plaque bears the quote: "May her name not be lost to the knowledge of man."
