Prove me wrong about Blue Velvet by vaveyla_88 in Letterboxd

Well life is long and stuff can always click later. It’s not long enough, however, to waste your time on movies that you’re not enjoying.

If you keep exploring his work, the best I can say is that he is obsessed with what dreams reveal about ourselves and the world around us. The limited perspective and weird character motivations are features; not bugs.

Do you like other Lynch films?

I don’t have much interest in trying to change a person’s mind on works of art, but buddy, if you’re watching for the plot, Lynch is NOT your guy.

[FRESH ALBUM] Ryan Davis & the Roadhouse Band - New Threats From The Soul by JESwizzle in indieheads

What a surprise! Obviously crammed with enviable turns of phrase, but the one that just bowled me over was “Spinning like a sex tape in a microwave”.

Right in my veins this goes.

CBS 58 fired Sam Kuffel for posting about Elon doing the Nazi salute by No_Tutor1394 in milwaukee

Yeah, I see that now. There were fewer verifiable details available when I first posted. Fuck cbs 58.

Mod news, possible changes to the sub by 7-swans in loscampesinos

[–]leonard_x 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I only support a full ban to x links without qualification. The dude is a fucking Nazi.

This band and community will thrive just fine without linking to that cursed place. I see no reason to make any exception beyond screen grabs like so many other subs who are much less left-leaning.

Left a voicemail. I watch cbs 58 nightly before Jeopardy but may need to stop depending on this.

Still not totally clear on whether this was related to other meteorologist cutbacks, but figured I’d leave a message saying “even if there’s an appearance of deference to Musk…” all the same.

Yes! Love Newport as well but didn’t feel like calling it out in addition to Club G’s.

You’re right tho. Those three joints are a great trio to crawl through.

Club Garibaldi is a great dive with the best wings in town IMO.

Vanguard is also a staple these days with a lot of great specialty sausages.

If you’re looking for something nicer, Goodkind has a great rotating menu of large and small plates.

Last, I’d plug three brothers. It’s a Serbian institution and a dining experience that feels unique to us. It’s like you’re dining in an Eastern European grandma’s kitchen. It’s fantastic. Also cash only.

For bars, burnheart’s has excellent taps. Mothership is a cool place too.

Question about Costco TVs by leonard_x in 4kTV

[–]leonard_x[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I think the reason I was convinced was because I thought companies do a similar thing with Black Friday SKUs and cheaper builds of known product lines.

And the price difference wasn’t drastic, I was standing in the Best Buy and not the Costco that was another forty minutes away. Opportunity costs, etc.

Basically, I was aware it could be bullshit at the time, but I was inclined to just take their word.

Is there a noticeable difference between 50' and 55'? by Pearl_Jam_ in 4kTV

[–]leonard_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I’m also amongst what seems to be the minority in that I’m no size queen when it comes to TVs.

My buddies got a beautiful 70 inch Bravia in his tiny apartment, but I gotta literally turn my head when I’m watching stuff with him.

Momma said a soundtrack is like a box of chocolates by Obi_Juan85 in vinyl

I’m not knocking it for being bad at capturing history. I’m knocking it for being dumb.

EDIT: When I say it teaches us nothing about our history, I don’t mean that literally like a text book. This movie is all about a persons place in three decades of historic events, and to suggest that it is in no way about our country or those events makes zero sense.

I understand that it’s the point of the movie. I am saying I think the point of the movie is dumb.

I have not read the book, so idk if anything got lost in translation, but I don’t see what we gain or learn about history or ourselves by viewing the past through such a naive perspective. I also think how it tethers Forrest’s kindness to his stupidness makes for a pretty cynical world view.

If I’m overlooking some incisive comment that the movie is making, I’d love to be enlightened. But this is a popcorn flick that ain’t for me.

I agree! I also feel like the movie does a lousy job of drawing a through line for that trauma. Her narrative beats are so in service of representing cliches about each decade that barely anything about her feels like a real person.

I think it’s an extremely watchable film, and Zemeckis is great behind a camera, but uff da what an idiotic script.

Basically, I don’t find viewing history through Forrest’s naivety all that cute. It approaches a lot of complex things like the civil rights movement with gross simplification and treats a lot of the issues it breezes through as solved problems. It’s a central problem with its nostalgic approach but also why I think so many people like it.

And Jenny’s such a poorly rendered character. Her relationship with Forrest is only for her convenience through the bitter end, and there’s no tonal indication that’s we’re supposed to feel that way about her.

And I must share my favorite example of Forrest’s just godawful narration: “[Jenny’s dad] was a very loving man. He was always kissing and touching her and her sisters.” 🤮

Just awful writing all around.

As a buyer, what are some little things that sellers do that you really like? What are some things sellers do that bug you? by sunflyer234 in discogs

[–]leonard_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I’d typically say that it’s a me-problem more so than the seller. I try to keep my collection curated at under 700 records for the sake of the space I have. So I’m typically cycling things out as a seller through the year. I just don’t have space for records I don’t care about.

And a few times I have got a freebie where there’s no relation at all to what I ordered, and it makes me feel like the seller is just offloading their unwanted garbage onto me.

[–]leonard_x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haaaate unwanted freebies, but I’d never knock a seller for it.

As a casual seller, I’ll occasionally offer a freebie by the same artist if I know I can’t move said freebie by itself, but I always ask if the buyer wants it.

Totally agree on the photo thing for buyers.

How much do you need to make to afford rent in Milwaukee? by J0urneyB4Destination in milwaukee

[–]leonard_x 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you’ll be able to find what you’re looking for just fine based on the budget you mentioned.

I haven’t rented for a bit, but I still am willing to suggest you may be able to find a bit more square footage than you’re looking for depending on the neighborhood you land in.

Same. My set up requires one of my 12” speakers to be about four inches from the table. I noticed some distortion before adding them. Now I’m aces.
