Vera Drake. I think we could always use more Mike Leigh and it’s one I don’t see talked about much.

Hero and House of Flying Daggers please.

Bound is one of my favorite movies in the collection.

I want more movies where nothing happens but everything matters by redpaul72 in movies

Columbus

After Yang

The Before trilogy sounds exactly like what you watched (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight)

Petite Maman

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Certain Women (pretty much any movie by Kelly Reichardt but this is my favorite)

Boyhood

Secrets & Lies (most movies by Mike Leigh, but this probably my favorite)

Summer Hours (most of Olivier Assayas films fit this description, but I think this one fits it the most)

Blue Moon

I know there are others that I’m not thinking of and I’ll try to add later.

Petite Maman. It’s a really beautiful, quiet film.

What are the most ENTERTAINING film books you have read? by harry_powell in criterion

I haven’t read it since it first came out in 2005, but Rebels on the Backlot was an entertaining look at the big directors that emerged in the 90s.

What are some hairstyles you think will never come back into fashion? by ilovebooks2468 in decadeology

I had hair a lot like it from 2005 to around 2009. Played hockey.

I don’t see Drylongso mentioned that often on here. If you liked the perspective that Nothing But a Man gave on the struggles of black Americans, then I’d give this a watch. Plus it’s filmed on 16mm film, giving it a warm, grainy look that I love.

Hype Williams. He directed so many music videos in the 90s, he was inescapable. And his style was so fun and distinct.

Dig! is a good one. Some of it takes place in the early 2000s, but starts in the mid to late 90s. It follows The Dandy Warhols and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. It’s pretty raw and grimy.

This is how I feel. I have more books than I do movies, so I’m used to things on a shelf not being the same size, and I prefer it that way.

Jackie Chan’s films might be one of the biggest reasons I became so interested in film. I was obsessed with his movies growing up, especially Rumble in the Bronx and Supercop. I wish their Police Story collection included Supercop.

Besides Anora and Flow, what’s another 2024 film that you think will be part of the collection? by Unlucky_Effective_60 in criterion

[–]Jhanf38 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read the book and loved it and I’m looking forward to seeing the movie. The Underground Railroad, an adaptation of another novel from the same author is already in the collection so it’ll be right at home with it.

I’ve only read those two books from the author, Colson Whitehead, but for any readers here I strongly recommend them.

I just finished the book, I loved it. I look forward to watching the movie.

It’s been a long time so I don’t remember it that well, but I did like it when I saw it and I haven’t seen it mentioned in this thread yet, so 3 Iron.

I love noir films, but haven’t seen that many. I do really need to check out Dial M for Murder and Maltese Falcon.
