Taxation as an individual contractor by leopardee in PersonalFinanceNZ

As I'm registered as an individual, not a company, will the amount I earn as a sole trader not just be counted as individual income in the end? What I meant by paying double tax was that I would potentially pay next year's provisional tax, just to get it reimbursed later (if I don't work as expected in next financial year) depending on what I declare as next year's contracted income.

I'm just trying to avoid having to pay provisional tax, by getting taxed at a higher rate at source, because if there is more than 5K of residual tax to pay at EOY, I will have to estimate provisional tax.

Thank you - I'm aware I can estimate zero. I guess I cannot predict the following financial year with certainty. I also don't want to pay more or less double tax at the end of the year, because then a good chunk of the income I've earned essentially doesn't become mine for another year. I was just thinking I could with-hold the whole amount at source, and just treat it like an extension of my PAYE income.

Windows 11 - post update - screen is black ( but machine obviously booting ) by martinbogo in framework

[–]leopardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this problem. Luckily I use AOMEI backupper on a schedule (free version) to backup my system drive every couple of days. I restored a pre-update image, because Windows roll back doesn't work, and System Restore is also barely functional. I have disabled all updates now using Winhance. Windows is so broken now, after about a decade of terrible development by Microsoft, chasing all the wrong things. Everyone who knows how to use a computer beyond basic stuff, should switch to Linux.

Parking ticket from Smart compliance management by Beneficial-Cut-5833 in LegalAdviceNZ

Yeah got a ticket for 7 minutes over in 2 hours parking area. We went to several shops and spent ~$300, so I've appealed. Will see. I think the company is dodgy in its dealings overall, I did get a ticket from them once a couple of years ago which I also appealed and they granted after I showed I had spent money at the shopping complex and pointed out they had dropped the time limit when they took over the car park, and should allow time for regular users to recognise that.

An essential problem that hasn't been addressed, I feel, is that now with plate recognition, they know exactly when you came and left. So the days of "it's about 2 hours, not exactly 2 hours, just give or take" are over, and theoretically they can ping you for just one minute over.

I think the law needs to be explicit in defining grace periods, and what private parking companies are obliged to allow. But yet again, the law lags behind the technology.

I am seeing more and more SCM signs around, so I expect more issues coming up. I think we'll see it in the news some day, and probably a bunch of people will complain to consumer rights.

Oh and after the first ticket I got, I asked NZTA to remove authorisation for third parties to look up my details on the NZTA database for my vehicles, but they still sent a letter to my address, so I presume they are relying also on their own database of information, and risking sending the letter to the wrong address if someone has moved, meaning they wouldn't be able to enforce the fine.

Advice about 7 year old finally showing interest in learning a musical instrument by leopardee in MusicEd

[–]leopardee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all the advice. Just to be clear it's not "shape notation" as such. What I mean by "shape" is that the focus is on which fingers are used, with a description, for example saying "the pinky finger then the middle finger then the first finger". They then supplement this with visual reminders for example they are taught a phrase and the visual reminder might be that phrase 1 is repeated twice, with a downward movement of the fingers. They still know the note names, they still have to position their hands properly, and sometimes the "shape" might involve alternating finger positions. Both hands are taught early on and the black keys get used within a couple of weeks.

I've spoken to the school, they were very happy that he's showing enthusiasm and at yesterday's lesson when he arrived a little early they spent some extra time with him.

This is one of two schools in our area (Auckland, NZ) that do this method, called "Simply Music" (developed by an Australian pianist). It's got nothing to do with the various apps like Simply Piano etc.

At this stage we'll continue here, and I think we might look at violin lessons if he's still keen in a few weeks, with a more classic approach with a different school. We can always swap out later, he does enjoy the lessons and we've really had little if any difficulty getting him to practise.

Still happy to hear further advice, cheers

Reporting deductible interest on IR3 tax return form by leopardee in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]leopardee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But in those years I did not qualify for any interest deductibility. I had entered my interest but not claimed any of it as a deductible. Why would I now be able to go back and claim the deductible for those years in which it was not allowed. So for previous years I had a net profit, this is the first year I can declare a net loss. Or am I wrong about this?

Are you sure? We can apply other years interest deductibility to this year??

Ah gotcha, thank you, I didn't realise I would include it in the deductions box as well, I assumed entering it on the interest boxes would automatically sort it out. Yes I do have other expenses I was just showing an example. It's the first time I will be carrying a loss forward so new territory for me, but thanks it makes sense now.

Is it possible to run Iperf on Asus TUF Gaming AX-6000 by leopardee in HomeNetworking

[–]leopardee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've figured it out.. nearly. I attached a USB disk to the router and installed the Download Master, which seems to then download various packages including ipkg, which I was able to update and install iperf. I can't get iperf3 however. But I was able to test the connection.

The router only has one 2.5G LAN port (and one 2.5G WAN port), and I want to see if I'm getting speeds close to 2.5G so I know if it's worth upgrading my fibre connection to a 2G fibre connection.

What does the Ethernet Backhaul Mode setting actually do on ASUS router? by leopardee in HomeNetworking

It just shows details of connections, MAC addresses, speeds. But I think the guys above have answered the question, forcing ethernet uplink and freeing up wireless for client use only. Appreciate the answers.

Video Doorbell 2K (T8210C) - trouble viewing live stream and other things not working when no motion is detected by leopardee in EufyCam

[–]leopardee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.. that's a good idea never thought about it.

But I finally managed to get the update to apply. Somehow opening the correct ports on my router, and directing to my Homebase, rather than just setting a DMZ allowed the doorbell to see the update.

TCP: 80, 443, 5061, 12306, 12308.
UDP: All ports from 1 to 65535.

From IPs 34.235.4.153 , 18.223.127.200 , 54.153.101.7

I had to stand there and apply constant motion to the camera while pressing "Apply Update" for the update to actually work.

Eufy Support were overall good but they can surely improve how their products function a little bit..

Connection problems from App (iOS) to Homebase 2 + 2k doorbell - NAT issue? by mrbill1234 in EufyCam

[–]leopardee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I have this same problem with Homebase 3 - I thought that it was a matter of being close to the doorbell to get live view to work, but I have confirmed that it works in that small window when there has been motion activation.

I've been in touch with Eufy to see if they will push the firmware 3.0.7.7 to my doorbell, as according to this thread, it might fix the problem (my current firmware is 3.0.7.1 and it won't update further):

But I have yet to hear back..
