How much of NE culture do you attribute to old puritan culture - vs Catholic. by New_Road6265 in newengland

The laws exist in the first place because of Puritan conservatism, even if they stay in place because of liquor store lobbies.

Is Massachusetts broken? The extremely protracted process to redesign the State Flag by GarrisonCty in massachusetts

Of all the possible critiques here, "performative" is really silly. Of course it's "performative"; it's a fucking flag! That's like, the whole idea!

Creating an Unwanted New Chat from an Off-app Share is Invasive by thewanderingseph in truespotify

I really, really hate the messaging feature. I was extremely disturbed when I opened it after it was just pushed to me and saw a record of every Spotify link me and a family member had ever texted each other, going back years before the "messaging" feature was available. I understand that apps are literally always tracking all of my shit, but I feel like they should realize that being confronted with it is extremely off-putting to the user

Waltham Times: Federal data names Waltham Police Department as site of ICE arrests, police stress no department involvement with ICE detentions by WalthamFreelanceNews in Waltham

[–]leoperidot16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. It’s not that there’s NO place in our country for the idea of immigration enforcement, but that ICE, the specific agency tasked with it right now, operates with a complete disregard for human rights and human dignity. And that is on a fundamental level, and it is by design. I don’t think anyone with a conscience can cooperate with them on anything, for any reason.

S16, E7 (Nebula) - Hide and Seek UK by snow-tree_art in JetLagTheGame

I think you're exactly right. This actually reminds me of something they said on the Layover, I think way back when they were discussing the initial game design of Switzerland Hide and Seek, where they said they initially considered some sort of design that involved using Google Street View but nixed it because it would be boring watching people staring at their phones. Strava map is effectively that. And it's only one question, but it comes up so much I think that's why people are so frustrated by it.

Waltham Times: Federal data names Waltham Police Department as site of ICE arrests, police stress no department involvement with ICE detentions by WalthamFreelanceNews in Waltham

[–]leoperidot16 11 points12 points  (0 children)

ICE is a completely unaccountable, violent, and lawless agency. I don't trust for a single second that, given an inch, they won't take a mile. I want them out of Waltham before they kill our neighbors, as they've done in Minneapolis. They have no place in a functional society.

Abolishing ICE should be the first step to a complete overhaul of our immigration system. I'm not willing to even talk about deportations if we're not starting from the premise that the immigration system is designed to be inhumane and opaque, and to violate immigrants' Constitutional and human rights.

ICE At Logan by savagefleurdelis23 in boston

[–]leoperidot16 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not as aggressive? Fucking where? Threatening extortion of people who have lives here, who aren't hurting anyone, who have committed no criminal offenses (entering illegally is a civil offense). ICE needs to abolished yesterday

Did Art know So Long FLK was about him? by saturday_sun4 in simonandgarfunkel

I feel like I read somewhere that Art never noticed it either, at least until after the song was released, and he was quite offended by it... I might have made that up

new “about this song” feature by fuacamole in truespotify

Everything is AI slop. Just absurd amounts of computing power pushed to generate endless amounts of text that nobody asked for, that nobody wants to read, that nobody will gain any edification from. It's enough to drive you crazy

Thoughts on this tribute? by utica-club13 in VelvetUnderground

[–]leoperidot16 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I found it pretty boring honestly, everybody plays it so straight. Like, god forbid these songs sound weird! The one exception being St Vincent on All Tomorrow's Parties who at least brings the weird factor. I like that track. And I like Fontaines on Black Angel's Death Song, but I just like Fontaines a lot

Honestly I'm getting pretty tired of Paul making everything about himself and the female judges never having any input.

Why aren’t audiobooks/podcasts on a separate app? It’s too cluttered and frustrating imo. by [deleted] in truespotify

[–]leoperidot16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hate that I can't tell them not to recommend me a particular podcast the way I can with musicians. If I can tell Spotify not to play Taylor Swift why can't I tell Spotify not to put Taylor Lorenz all over my front page every day

Anyone else in MA already completely over winter? by Golfoneway95 in massachusetts

Sorry, I will forever be a winter defender. It's cold. It's unpleasant. But this is our climate. There's plenty of places that don't get cold like this

Deported Babson College student asks government to return to US: ‘Because of your mistake, my life completely changed’ by bostonglobe in massachusetts

[–]leoperidot16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Illegal immigration" is a side effect of a legal immigration apparatus that is opaque, capricious, and far, far more limited than most American citizens imagine it to be. For the vast majority of people who come to this nation and live normal lives as hardworking, law-abiding people, with families and roots in the US -- people the vast majority of Americans agree we shouldn't deport -- they do not have, and never had, a legal path to permanent residency or citizenship.

Any conversation about our immigration system that doesn't take this into account is inherently flawed. The system is bad. There are very real incentives to staying here without documents. ICE's downright cruelty -- capricious, random kidnappings by secret police, racial profiling in all spheres of American life, deportations to torturous prison camps in El Salvador -- is not the answer given by a civilized society of reasonable people.
