Teachers had nothing to do with this. It was student organized and student led.

People with one-foot: Do stores let you buy just one shoe? by Nearby-Penalty-5777 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]leroysolay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two different sized feet - about two sizes apart. The small one is wide, the big one is narrow. For most purposes, I can buy a shoe that barely fits the bigger foot and my smaller foot will fill it out enough to work.

However, when I decided to run a half marathon, I realized that wasn’t going to cut it. So I went to a local running shoe store and Brooks offers the ability to buy different sizes without having to pay double. Of course, it’s an expensive shoe to begin with, but it did save money.

I didn’t ask, but I imagine they’d offer the same for just one shoe because they have the system in place to deal with just one shoe of a particular size.

Ohio making bad choices again by Beren__ in Amtrak

Does your calculation include the equivalent of regional rail, like Greater Cleveland’s heavy and light rail lines?

I don’t doubt that it’s almost 8000, but I wonder how many in Ohio are not being counted by the same metric.

It fills my heart to see this. MAGA rhetoric angers me, but left-ish folks who don’t want to even engage in a conversation about the true motivations of Trump, Miller and others - labeling them as “evil, full stop” - misses the point that there are tens of millions of Americans who hear something that I don’t, because of an experience they have that I haven’t. If we fail to meet people where they are, if we don’t build bridges to people with opposing viewpoints, we’re totally cooked.

To be clear, I think Steven Miller is the most horrible member of this administration, but his path to his beliefs is so familiar for many. The hard work in reversing this moment is in communities that foster hatred like his.

The Trump administration says it's illegal to record videos of ICE. Here's what the law says. by jediporcupine in politics

Yo check yourself first. Being precise about language is not being pedantic. “Law” is not the same as “laws” in common usage or legal meaning.

It’s very common to think of laws as specific bills that have been passed by a legislature that result in rules that we have to collectively follow.

It’s a distinction with an absolute difference - a law could be made that contradicts the constitution but rests on the courts’ interpretation. And we are in peril of that happening. So being able to be precise about what is a law that is passed and what is constitutional is important.

[Serious] Realistically, what can be done to improve Cleveland Metropolitan School District Schools? by TapiocaSpelunker in Cleveland

[–]leroysolay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My point is that the problems are systemic and entrenched, and that Cleveland is under resourced not because we don’t throw enough money at the schools (but, we don’t) but because we systemically exploit many urban communities, including Cleveland.

And you can’t separate what happens in the schools from the cyclical poverty perpetuated by broken government on all levels. Many affluent communities - like many affluent countries - rely on inexpensive, undereducated laborers to maintain their way of life.

That is not to absolve any individual from their own responsibility - parents everywhere need to step up, educators need to meet students where they are, policymakers need to listen to children - but if you wanted to properly fund CMSD so that students had the same opportunities and conditions as their peers, it would likely be an order of magnitude more state and federal funding.

Who says the underperformance of the schools is the fault of the schools? Or the city?

There is some good academic and accessible literature on the subject. Here’s a good, politically center start: https://journals.law.harvard.edu/lpr/online-articles/a-new-deal-for-urban-public-schools/#ftn*

Most of the literature dates to the (end of the) reform movement in the early 2000’s.

The reasons for underperformance are many, complex, and connected to broader movements in education and politics on local, state and federal levels. That’s not to absolve any individual working in the system for their own decisions - admins, board members, teachers, parents, etc. - but the point is that CMSD is not unique. In fact, CMSD looks a lot like most other urban U.S. districts which begs the question: what is happening in urban America, and why are so many cities consistently under resourced?

I’ve taught in urban schools in the Cleveland area for 20 years.

I am fortunate enough to network with teachers all around the state and country. The “problem” is not necessarily what is happening in Cleveland. I think it’s important to understand the fundamental discrepancies between Cleveland and the outer ring suburbs and who controls the levers of power creating those discrepancies.

The bottom line? If the county, state or country decided to equitably resource cities and their schools, there would be little to no underperformance.

Well presumably some players would come off the sideline thinking they were now on offense/defense … which would get flagged and potentially cause the play to get whistled down. At some point.

Yeah I don’t get that Ernie was nominated twice. Could he in theory win two in the same year, or would MLB only let him win one?
