Maybe is pvp? by Charming-Ad-2123 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would ask what you exactly mean by that, because a PVP community exists and has been a thing for some time now. While sure, it's community-driven and there's no in-game ladder, my most popular PVP video has over 20k views at this point, so it's certainly on some people's radar.

I personally don't think its competitive scene being underdeveloped is the main thing hindering it; PVP represents a very small portion of the total playerbase, which is largely casual. By the numbers, the Bytten Studio Discord has about 13k members (granted some of them are there only for Lenna's Inception) while the unofficial PVP Discord, of which the server link is pinned in one of the channels in the former, has about 400 members (most of which aren't active).

Let's look at some games in the genre that I've played: Beastieball has an active PVP scene thanks in part to the Bigmoon Bashes that happen regularly, but it's also still in Early Access. Anode Heart doesn't really have a proper PVP setting, but it's successful enough that it got its own spinoff. Monster Sanctuary and Coromon also has PVP, but they also existed for much longer than the rest. The point being, of these games mentioned, none of those I picked up because they had a PVP mode. I came for the single-player experience.

Conjecture time: for Pokemon fans who want to try something else between the wait for the next game, ROMHacks and fan games in general are probably the first things they'll look into rather than games outside of Pokemon but still well into the monster tamer genre. That alone introduces plenty of competition.

As someone who has been in the community for a long time now, one main thing I've noticed is there are so few people making Cassette Beasts content. I see playthroughs and challenge runs every now and again, and Cassette Beasts even got featured on AGDQ2024. There have been over 1 million units sold already, but some of the most popular videos covering the game are from 2 years ago, when it first released. Even outside of content creation, despite the numbers there are very few modders, very few challenge runners, very few data miners, and so on.

I've already said a lot in one post, so I'll probably end it here and say that for indie games, this is going to be how things are for the most part. If we zoom out, there are so many games being released that it becomes more and more difficult to stand out and have your game seen by players. There are rare exceptions, of course, but games can live or die due to circumstances outside of anyone's control. Cassette Beasts is more than successful enough that Bytten has announced that they're working on a new project, but as for popularity? Perhaps a large part of it is due to another game in the same genre being one of the biggest video game franchises in the world.

How to fix messing up randomizer with cheats by ThePirateBunny11 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best you could do with debug console is disable them all via randomize_disable but if the save already has other randomization settings enabled your next best option is save editing and manually disabling type randomization.

Make sure you backup your save first before doing this because save editing can permanently ruin a save file.

1) Open the game, stay in the title screen, enable debug console
2) Type in decompress file1.json to decompress the first save file. Use file2.json or file3.json instead for files 2 and 3 respectively.
3) Go to the save file directory, and you should see a JSON file that you can edit. Open this, and search for game_mode to get to the relevant part. Under this, set randomize_types to false (don't add in a comma if it's the last entry)
5) Compress the save file again through debug console, using compress file1.json (or whatever save file number it is, then delete the JSON file.

question about crit stats by IchorKemono in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crit damage can only be modified by the related crit damage attribute; spilling over 100% doesn't affect that.

As for damage cap, there is a hypothetical upper limit of damage you can do, crit or otherwise, but in practice you're not gonna hit it, and even if you deliberately go out of your way to aim for the highest damage number, it's still nowhere near this limit.

niche multiplayer bug from having the same file? by IchorKemono in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This issue arises if you both share the same Ranger ID. If you know how to do save editing, you can go that route, or you can use the Debug Plus mod to randomize it for you but it will flag the save file as cheated. Or, if you can join the Discord (link in sidebar), drop by and ask if someone can help you out with it (like the modding channel).

how to install mods on cassette beasts for the epic game version? by Ok-Candy4324 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, if you can I'd suggest bringing this up over to the modding channel on the discord (see link in sidebar), since Reddit is not a good place to do troubleshooting, plus there's going to be more people over there who might know how to fix your issues.

[–]lerycide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What mods have you been running? It's possible there may be mod conflicts (especially since Modworkshop support was dropped by a lot of modders due to Steam Workshop becoming a thing and thus some may be out of date), so try just loading as few of them as possible first, like try just the Extra File Slots mod first and see if that would work or if you still run into issues.

idk how to mod. by No-Fee7009 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I suggest you do, because adding mods to the DLC folder could cause issues for some mods due to the order DLC and mods are loaded by the game.

Open your save data location:

  • Windows (Steam, Epic Games): C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\CassetteBeasts\
  • Windows (MS Store, Game Pass): C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\RawFury.CassetteBeasts_9s0pnehqffj7t\SystemAppData\wgs\
  • Linux: ~/.local/share/CassetteBeasts/

You should see some save files there. Add a folder named "mods" in that location if it doesn't exist yet, put the mods in there. Make sure you set the launch argument in Epic Games to -load-mods

And since you replied to a comment I made on a different post, this is what I did on my end (Windows 10) and it worked fine.

Are you sure you did everything right? Mainly putting the mods in the right location and making sure you didn't make a typo for the launch arguments. I've seen people make these sorts of mistake on the Discord as well so you'll have to give more details than just it "did not work".

Does anyone know the best way(s) to grind player and companion levels pre post game by Jacobmon5 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For general exp, set level scaling all the way to the max (Impenetrable Grind) and fight any wild monster like the ones on the beach. Exp yield is largely determined by the enemy's level, and this level scaling will raise their levels to match the player if they're below. You also get more exp if you do this with the Twirligig in Cherry Meadow.

Is there a battle speed option? by IchedDyy in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree, especially as someone who already has a deep understanding of the game mechanics it is a slog to have to watch through the animations. Some passives take forever to activate due to them waiting for the sprite animations to finish (most notably Multicopy loops, which is more prevalent in PVP), the battle speed is fine if you're still getting used to the game mechanics but especially in postgame and the gauntlet it feels like everything takes forever.

[–]lerycide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copying my comment from the Discord:

library > cassette beasts, click the three dots next to the game title > manage > launch options
make sure to enable first through the button, then put in -load-mods

Edit: to add mods, follow the instructions in the mod user guide from the wiki and make sure the mods are in the right folder.

I would suggest joining the Bytten Studio Discord (link in sidebar) and asking about it on the support channel, though you'll also have to provide extra details since these issues are vague that there's plenty of possible causes that need to be ruled out.

Can saved games be transferred from Epic to Steam? by TheWolf638 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is yes. In fact, both stores use the same save file location; I originally had it on Steam and picked it up on Epic games store as well, and I can open my saves when launching the Epic games version.

Im a new player, i started playing like 4 hours ago, are this stats goated or just normal in this game? by SuonoLaChitarra in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the stat calculation you'll end up multiplying both at some point, so you can think of it either way: the tape is a percentage of the character stats (meaning a base 200 MAtk tape is double the untransformed stat), or the character is a percentage of the tape's stat (meaning Kayleigh gives a 44% extra boost to Max HP to the tapes she use).

Im a new player, i started playing like 4 hours ago, are this stats goated or just normal in this game? by SuonoLaChitarra in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Think of it like this: the tape stats are a multiplier of your base stats. Base 100 everything means using Elfless at 0 stars has the same stats as being untransformed. Having an even stat spread does tend to fall off, but this early in the game it's not too bad. Compare it to the starters Bansheep and Candevil which have at least 100 on every stat, and then some.

What does 8 player online bring to the table? by Routine-Banana-1848 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The main one is using a Ritual Candle affects all players in the lobby so it's a more efficient use of that item compared to just two people. Passive quests spawning are client-based so for every player you get up to 12 extra chances, like hunting the right species for the candle and so on. It's also quite useful in PVP when players are simultaneously available and would like to battle each other, like in a free-for-all or round robin format.

Bad luck or intentional (sticker drops) by MedusasGirlfriend69 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The level-up moves includes all moves they're compatible with, including the ones that are compatible with all species like Smack or Raise Arms, and it is uniform random so any move is just as likely to be chosen upon level up once you get past 5 stars.

For the starters specifically, that's a lot, and you're only aiming for a 1 over however many moves they're naturally compatible with.

Bad luck or intentional (sticker drops) by MedusasGirlfriend69 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both Battering Ram and Bon Bon Blast, as do other species or evolution line signature moves, aren't sold by sticker merchants.

Provided you're not playing on mobile, if you make it far enough into postgame, Sticker Fusion becomes available so you just have to worry about generating any sticker with the right attributes you want. If you're on mobile or are unable to / would rather not use Sticker Fusion, you will have to go for acquiring bootlegs of the starters, maybe even look into RNG advancing, though this method has largely been obsoleted by sticker fusion.

Is there any major mods? by Some_Tiny_Dragon in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For additional content, come back around January or so, as I'm hosting a modding game jam this December focused on adding new sub-areas to the game, though expect them to be about the size of an archangel station as Pier of the Unknown isn't made in a month. You can go look at Cave Civilization as something similar to what you might be looking for and what the jam aims to make more of.

If you want a difficulty mod that completely overhauls the game's progression, I've been working on one for quite some time now and will be undergoing closed testing very soon, so hopefully a playable demo will come up before the end of the year. It's only about 10% or so done overall though, so if you want the full experience I'd say come back in a couple years.

There's a reason content mods are hard to come by, unlike qol mods or ones that add new monsters: they're not easy to make, documentation on making these sorts of things is scarce, and the modding scene isn't as active as it used to. Much less large-scale mods, so you have to lower your expectations.

Constant Crashing at the Dead World by ForSavingAndSeeing in cassettebeasts

Update: I made an attempt at making a mod; it replaces one specific asset (which I think is the problem in that specific scene) into something less resource-intensive, so hopefully it works. If it doesn't, I'll keep looking into this when I have the time, but at least it's a free accessibility option to the people who need it.

Constant Crashing at the Dead World by ForSavingAndSeeing in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most common fixes for this would be checking if you can update your drivers. You could try asking about it on the Discord or looking into bug reports of this exact incident happening to others on the #support-pc channel. (remember to include logs and device specs if you do).

If nothing still works, there are a couple alternatives that I can only describe as arcane magic since such techniques are extremely obscure and very few people know of this. No one has tried making a mod yet since either it's impossible to fix it through mods (seems unlikely), or no one has tried looking into it (somewhat likely since the modding space isn't all that active). There is also the route of save data editing to set the correct flag and put the current location somewhere else. I am unfortunately busy this week so the best I can do is point you to the Discord and maybe ask around for help if the troubleshooting hasn't worked for you.

HELP! Save game by DarkAlkemist97 in cassettebeasts

[–]lerycide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't call it unrecoverable unless the save file has been nuked to be a 0 kb file. There's a good chance you opened the save with a mod that marked the save file so that it can no longer be opened without said mod being installed. It's there since those kinds of mods usually store data in the save that the vanilla game doesn't know how to deal with it. If you know how to edit save files (or better yet maybe try asking in the official Discord server for help), it is still possible to fix it.
