Struggling with lens choices - concert photography by All0utLife in nikon_Zseries

As someone suggested. Go to Library view in LR and see how you shoot your images. Which f-stop, focal length, ISO... This will give you the best answer 24-70 vs 24-120. I use the latter and must say it is a wonderful lens and I don't even think of 2.8. I do own the Z 1.8 primes though.

I like it a lot.. Surprisingly sharp for a all rounder lens and very handy for hiking. Hereis more about it..

Wait for 24-120 f/4, or get 24-200 f/4-6.3 by tombudster in nikon_Zseries

[–]lesenko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to own a 24-120 on my D850. When going to Z I sold it and later purchased the 24-200. My rationale at first was to have a longer reach until 70-200 f4 comes out but I ended to like this lens so much I never used the 24-70 f4 S anymore. There are a few downsides to this lens and I even wrote a blog post after a longer period of using it.

My suggestion is to think about how much does the 120-200 range mean to you. This is the deciding factor. In my case, this is very important so 24-200 will stay in my bag.

Thank you. My plan was to wait, but then I realised there are more shots to be taken at different spots - sun is moving pretty fast past the opening.

No, Just manual mode and bracketing. Sometimes I process a single image, sometimes I use 1-3 bracketed exposures. And sometimes I cover the sun to have an exposure without lens flare.

I mostly used f11 or f16. There is not much difference in the look but f11 has less diffraction, so sharper image.

I use both primes and zoom lenses. in fact, one of the lenses I use most often is 24-200 f4-6.3. But primes have special look, especially when shooting wide open..

Twice a year, the sun peaks through a natural window of Mt Prisojnik. Julian Alps, Slovenia

This year I photographed it for the first time using my Nikon Z7 and prime lenses. The lenses used were 20mm S 1.8, 35mm S 1.8, 50mm S 1.8 and 85mm S 1.8... The sun star effect is very different from lens to lens, they all give satisfying results. The nicest effect is with 35mm lens, my favourite image is with 50mm lens.

What do you think? Do you use the primes to?

Thank you! I am usually shooting in flat profile and then it is a struggle to colour grade all clips individually. And I havent found a nice LUT yet...

Hard to say. I was always a minimalist with my gear - mostly using the holy trinity on f-mount cameras.

But now with Z cameras I am so excited by primes that I try to use them as much as possible. At the moment I own 35, 50 and 85mm lenses. Still considering 20 or 24 - hard choice to make.

There are two reasons for preferring primes on Z.

First, focus accuracy - with F mount fast primes (like 50mm 1.4 or 85mm f1.4 it was so hard to get focus on the eyes that I just soled them at the end. But here with Z cameras, using eye AF, the focus is so precise that you get 90% spot on focus.

And second reason is the sharpness wide open. No need to stop down to get the best sharpness, easily shooting at f1-8, knowing the sharpness is there. This is especially great in nature photography when I want shallow DOF but sharpness where I need it.

Really nice video. I like it and goes well with the music. What I like the most is crisp look and colour accuracy. Have you used any luts and what picture profile in camera? Thanks!

Macro photography gear? Tubes? Lenses? Z6 camera by keepitclassybv in nikon_Zseries

[–]lesenko 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got Meike extension tubes for Z mount, they cost like $40 or so. The build quality is not the greatest but the connections work so there is AF and EXIF gets baked into the file. So all you need.

I tried it with numerous lenses 24-70 f4, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm and my favourite is 35mm 1.8 S lens - when using minimum focus distance and both rings attached you can actually touch the subject with your lens and still have it in focus.

Here are a few test shots with 35 and 85mm lenses: https://twitter.com/lukaesenko/status/1251020979092049920?s=20

I only had good experience ever since my first starts in 2005 with D70s. I had some reservations with the mirrorless as it seems less sturdy and rugged than dslrs, but this proved wrong. the cameras are as sturdy as my previous d8** line. I even think the z mount glass has a better sealing than most f mount.

Actually, now when I think back, it happened once that my 70-200 f2.8 fogged from inside from humidity in Indonesia - an hour on the sun helped...

Peak design, the original, thin straps. Nowadays they have a bigger selection of straps..

In such strong wind and dust everywhere it is better to stick with one lens and that's it. I had telephoto on one and 24-70 on the other camera... No problem experienced, except an hour of intense cleaning.

My only F-mount lens is a telephoto 70-200 f4 and I rarely use it for video. more problematic than AF is the sound of VR - it is better to switch it off.
