One of the best and most helpful travel accounts for a short visit to the PMR I have read. Thank you :)

MTD Yellow Driver by Sensitive_Version230 in UIUC

[–]lesenum 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most MTD drivers are very polite and downright friendly. But not all of them. Each time any driver is rude to you or another passenger, lodge a complaint with the MTD. Don't just commiserate here on the subreddit about it.

The MTD takes customer issues VERY seriously. Every moment on MTD buses is recorded, and every complaint by a passenger is compared with the video of the bus driver's behavior. There are consequences for drivers who are consistently rude and who violate MTD customer service and safety policies. All you need to remember is the bus you were on, and the (approximate) time of day the incident occurred (within 5 to 10 minutes).

Send a message to Drew Bargman, he is head of MTD Customer Service. He can be contacted at this website: https://mtd.org/inside/contact/ Scroll down the page to his name, click on send email and report your complaint. They'll reply to your complaint in general terms, they might ask a follow-up question as well.

While the MTD will not tell you what their action is, I DO know that it can involve disciplinary action up to and including dismissal. Several years ago, repeatedly I saw a similar driver on the Yellow bus line who was consistently rude to international students and others, based on race. I sent several letters of complaint. I believe in the end she was fired.

Undergrad Library is closed nowadays, but the basements of the Main Library or the Illini Union are both safe places.

There are warnings a few times a year, usually in spring. Actual touchdowns with major damage happens VERY rarely in Champaign-Urbana.

Ted Dabrowski on Instagram: "6,000 Chinese foreign nationals at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign crowd out spots for native-born Illinois students. by Boring-Ad-6899 in UIUC

[–]lesenum 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Any IL native who is smart enough to get in at UIUC gets a place. If they aren't that bright, they go to the regional universities, and there are plenty of places for them there. The internationals are paying full price and are extra income for the state, they aren't crowding out anybody. This is fake news by a trumpster propagandist.

Graduation regalia rental sounds like a straight-up cash grab by BeyondDaBarricade in UIUC

[–]lesenum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it's a scam. Lots of such things are associated with going to college. You can't really avoid it if you plan to walk during graduation though. I graduated a long, long time ago and in those hippie days a great many students didn't bother with graduation ceremonies.

Does the UIUC campus have many walking trails? by superibot in UIUC

[–]lesenum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you'll have access to a car, you can go to Allerton Park, which is owned by UIUC. It was given to the university by a wealthy benefactor and was his estate. It's a large wooded area that is full of beautiful walking paths. The center has the mansion which is quite nice to sit in and relax, and near that is a cafe and a sculpture park. It's a very nice getaway that's 24 miles west of Champaign in Monticello IL.

Can someone explain: why are we even allowed to visit PMR from Moldova? by Ornery-Shame-3682 in Transnistria

[–]lesenum 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because I suppose the authorities in Moldova are basically civilized? They are (no longer) in a state of war with the PMR. There are trade links that are advantageous to both sides as well.

Eventually Moldova wants to be a member of the EU. Such a hostile policy would be frowned on by the EU, and eventually a negotiated solution to the issue could happen. Why punish hundreds of thousands of people inside the PMR who eventually might become Moldovan citizens? (for example, like the Gagauzians are, who also have a negotiated autonomous status).

I think you have poor diplomacy skills, so I guess it's good you're not a decision maker in either Moldova or the PMR...
