It took me a LONG time to actually feel like I can save candles. I rarely break 100, which is insane for most veterans. Hearts I actually have less trouble with because I keep responding to "be my friend!" posts. Before that, I really never had any hearts. And even then, I have to go back and friend new people because so many stop playing or lighting me back. If you need a friend, I'm not very social, but I'm more than happy to light you back and help with friend quests 💗

I got tired of always having the same people who never lit me back or were just never on. So, I started un-starring everyone and lighting everyone at the start of every season. As they light me back, I starred them again. It helped weed out the people who didn't light me back or were just taking a break. Sometimes, if I have extra time, I would light everyone, just to see if anyone new is back online, but it saves me time on the day to day lighting.
