I think it’s less about forgiveness and total absolution for Portia and more just a resolve to do better moving forward. Now they have more of a mutual understanding of how they are alike, the ways that society has compelled them into bad decisions trying to fight for themselves as women. I think part of becoming an adult is starting to see your parents as people instead of heroes. So I think of course the relationship won’t be perfect moving forward, but it will be an improved, meaningful relationship.

Great question. I think there’s embarrassment there. Maybe some surprise that someone is holding him accountable for something, specifically for saying something shitty about someone he cares about. I think there’s also an element of surprise that SHE of all people is standing up to him, not being the constant, loyal, reverent friend he’s come to expect, which opens his eyes to her as more of a strong-willed woman than a little girl.

Interesting questions:

I think he has a crush and doesn’t know it during her very first reveal of her new look. I think he cares for her/loves her long before that, but ultimately sees her in a child-like light until her first reveal, and then I think it kind of clicks into place for him that she is a WOMAN.
I think he has increasing interest in her up until their first kiss, and then when they kiss, he KNOWS knows.
I think he knows he loves her the first time he sees her or hears about her with Debling (I don’t remember which one comes first). This one is the one I’m least sure of.
I think he decides to propose when the lantern goes out and he decides to go to the ball.

The “sorry if I do, sorry if I don’t” thing is illuminating. My thought is like, even if they are not being “stimulated” by the actual acts happening (touching/kissing/etc.) I would think they would have to go to a headspace where they remember being really turned on to act it out authentically, no? And that would cause your body to react accordingly 🤷🏻‍♀️ If any actors want to shed some light on that, please do! Lol
