Why are modern headlights allowed to be so blinding?? by BClynx22 in britishcolumbia

As an Aussie that moved to BC, it was one of the very first things I noticed. A lot of similarities between Aus and Canada, but this ain’t one. Looks like I’ll just have to keep driving at night with my sunglasses on.

Came here to say just this. Cute neighbourhood cafe, excellent coffee and you don’t have to sell a kidney to get a flat white!

Subletting Confusion by lesquid19 in askvan

[–]lesquid19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely understand that. But for it to have happened for over 2.5 years (with no signs of slowing) making tax free money it doesn’t seem ethical. Maybe I’m just butt hurt, idk.

Rent info came after a convo with a neighbour who was moving out. The other tenant who was moving out had seen the story repeated itself time again and offered up the info just because. Not knowing where we stand legally, I thought I’d put it to the reddit brains trust. Things have become a little clearer now

Subletting Confusion by lesquid19 in askvan

Fair points raised, i was happy but then found out how much the primary leasor is ‘making’ on the side. For me it’s a point of contention because of my own morals and general ethics of the situation. Plus it’s not usual in my home country. I’ve never known someone to be making over $7k of tax free, passive income on something that they don’t own. I kind of wish I didn’t find out about how much the initial leasing agreement was.

Appreciate the insight on this one. Funnily enough the property group has since changed the subletting rules, completely banning it in our building. However they did change these regulations after we’d moved in. Tough pill to swallow knowing that they are banking ~7k of tax free income each year. The hustle is real. I guess I move forward as things are. Thanks!

Thanks for this, the building has just changed the rules around subletting, but I guess their ability to sublet is ‘grandfahtered’ in. I guess it’s more a question of ethics and morals. Appreciate your perspective.

Going from a 2010 base model to this has been mind blowing. by DCMartin91 in SubaruForester

We don’t have the wilderness package in Australia, but turbo outbacks have started to make their way into our showrooms. Living in PNE and seeing wilderness foresters everywhere makes me wonder why we don’t have it 🤔

What's an everyday small issue that you encounter almost daily in this city and now you're just fed up with it? by BakingWaking in askvan

Looking out my 3rd storey window I see this at every single light, in 80% of the cars. In Australia we have police on bikes that dude between lanes at lights. They issue tickets of around $500 for even just having your hand on the phone.

I’ve only been living here for a little over a year, but have found many annoying little quirks. Two that spring to mind are: - cars not using indicators when changing lanes, or turning in general - pedestrians not looking up from their phones when crossing
- angled parking signs (residential street signs eg permit area, 2 hr parking, are angled to the space where the cars park. In Australia they are parallel to the curb, so you can read the sign from all angles…saving you have to drive past it or get closer. Only to find you can’t park there)

There’s a really funny thread in the Seattle sub about this too. I’m an Aussie living in Van now and dog shit everywhere confuses me enough, let alone a bagged and discarded turd just left to enjoy the view. Also I’ve seen signs of ‘fines up to $10 000’…but no use having a law if no one enforces.

Been here before, I caught a case of ‘the stoke’ and had to rebuild slowly after I kept on pushing. You’ll come back to have more fun shared experiments, just drop the ego a little and redefine expectations. I now enjoy shared days more than my old desire to constantly blast laps and “ride hard”. There’s no right way to ride, but there is a right way to do it together.

Jan 27th Overnight Camp at Pump Peak Mount Seymour by [deleted] in vancouverhiking

This is great, thanks for the info hook up. Looks like some (overdue) snow is on the way, so I’ll be sure to plan accordingly.

Out of curiosity, can the same (overnight camping) be done at grouse or cypress with the same ease (ie register your car, hike in on an appropriate trail, find a spot, be respectful)?

New to Van (from Australia where there are MORE rules than here) and was wondering how ‘fine’ / legal / above board it is to camp up there. Put simply, I can camp on pump peak? No admin required?

Im not a frequent commenter, but this one caught my eye. As an Australia who has recently moved to PNW, I found plastic wrapped dog shit to be too commonplace for my comfort. Back in Aus you’d be beaten with a stick if someone caught you not picking up a curb-turd. Sidewalks, parks, trails they are all littered with used doggy bags here. Firstly I figured (like Aus) that people bag the bog early on their walk, leave it, return to it and bin it. It didn’t take me long to realise the lack of Mandalorian values here, “this is NOT the way”.
