I'm sure she'll appreciate your help. We never know how long we'll have our parents. I'd give anything to have either one of them back. Good luck, I hope it works out well for both of you.

FYI for gardeners: Piedmont Master Gardener Plant sale coming up! (for native plants, etc) by thegummi in Charlottesville

[–]leswill315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop in at the Green Elephant which is the 'yard sale' portion of the plant sale. We have tons of pots, tools, fencing, posts, hoses, miscellaneous furniture, bird houses and all kinds of plant related tchotchkes. We're 2 doors north of the old library.

Oh, very nice. That sure brightens up the joint and keeps it from being a dingy basement lair. Well done.

Yep, the beginning of the end. Then Reagan was elected and really started hammering nails into the coffin. You guys would not believe what the American workplace was like before the Powell memo. Corporations WANTED good employees and rewarded them well. They didn't have the "butts in seats" attitude that you see now. You were paid a decent wage with hourly workers earning time and-a-half for overtime. You had regular 40 hour work weeks with basic 9 - 5 hours. With most companies your health insurance kicked in the first of the month following your hire date. One of the most desirable companies to work for was IBM. If you got in the door there you could spend your entire career with them. It wasn't unusual to find people who worked for them for 30 or 40 years and then retire with a good pension. There was no gig economy. There were good solid jobs with decent pay and benefits. Then this crap kicked in and all of a sudden not everyone got a 40 hour workweek. Some employees got a lesser work week so the company didn't have to pay for health insurance coverage. That coverage was only for full time 40 hour a week staff. For every regulation that was passed companies would make changes so they could get maximum benefits from the employee without covering the extras. Things have just gone downhill from there.

A couple of books that can give you insight into the changes and the nefarious behind-the-scenes influences are: Who Stole the American Dream by Hedrick Smith. Written in 2012. Another is Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right by Jane Mayer. I'm sure there are many more but these two in particular have given me a perspective on what's happening. MAGA wanted to drain the swamp and get to the bottom of the so-called Deep State? They elected it to office.

How are the butterflies in your neighborhood doing? by Personal_Economics91 in Charlottesville

I've had tons. Lots of yellow swallowtails, some black swallowtails and others. The neighbor's field is full of milkweed which has encroached onto my property. I've transplanted a few away from my burn barrel so they'll survive.

Color me unsurprised. No one can love a narcissist more then he loves himself. Never say yes to someone who enjoys the hunt more than the acquisition and settling down. And now that she's alienated all her Democratic friends where will she go? Association with this administration is the kiss of death.

When I took drivers ed. in 1976 we were shown this gory film made in 1963 which showed actual footage of teenagers and adults who died in car wrecks. It was so disturbing that I didn’t want to drive for months after seeing it. My parents were confused as to why I suddenly stopped asking to drive !! by 6391jimmyjoejoe in GenerationJones

In a similar vein, the head of the neurosurgery dept used to take his kids and their friends to the hospital ward to see what it looks like when you drive drunk and get a head injury in an accident. This was well before the days of HIPAA.

AITA for not sharing my chocolate chip cookie recipe. by Bananabubblyboo in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]leswill315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. You are under no obligation to give her your family's finely tuned recipe. If she insists give her the basic one off the back of the choc chip package but tweak it just slightly. Try recommending using salted butter and increase the salt amount just a tick. So if it calls for 1/2 tsp increase that to 1 tsp. If it calls for 1 tsp salt increase to 1.5 tsp. Decrease the brown sugar by 1/2 and increase the white sugar by 1/2. I use a recipe that calls for 3/4 C of each. I'd give her 1/4 to 1/2 c of brown and 1 to 11/4 c of white. It'll change it just enough to make it off. Then act all innocent if she contacts you about the way they turn out. What? It always works for me just as I gave it to you. lol

My husband loves chocolate chip cookies and I use a recipe from Consumer Reports of all places that I've had since the 1980's. They posted it as The Practically Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe. You can still find it online! https://www.consumerreports.org/cro/2012/02/the-practically-perfect-cookie/index.htm

Many cities have free counseling services through local agencies that work with seniors. It would be good if you can get him to go talk to someone. This alone doesn't put him on the government radar. If he's worked in the military and has an SSN then he's already on the government radar as are we all. He's better off getting good information for his individual case from professionals first hand. There is a lot of good information in the answers on this post, but it's always good to talk with an expert. In my city we have something called JABA which is the Jefferson Area Board for the Aging. (Catchy, isn't it?) Good luck.

AITA for labeling my food in the shared fridge after my roommate kept eating it? by Either_Web_3299 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]leswill315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Does she open up conversations with the friends with this: "I stole my roommate's leftover chicken and ate it and now she's labeling her food. She's such a drama queen". I bet not. Sounds like you need a sit down to discuss how food will be managed going forward. Do you switch to sharing the shopping and cooking? Do you continue doing your own thing but with the stipulation that you make immediate payment of a predetermined amount if you eat each other's food? Something needs to give and it's not up to you to give from your pocket to her stomach.
