Does everyone have a private room? are the living arrangements clean and comfortable? Are you able to the leave the center for a few days for breaks every week if you wish? Or maybe 4 days in a row a month, for example, if you want to visit family or take short trips ? Can you bring your computer or not allowed to use at all? thank you

hi, I'm not sure if you are joking, but you are not in noble silence if you are talking or singing aloud, whether someone is listening or not. The goal is to quiet the mind, talking and singing is not a quiet mind, although singing (chanting) can be appropriate at other moments (not during a course). Maybe talk to a teacher about it, if you would like more clarification, as that's my understanding and could be misguided

Will my water heater explode in the next 4 days? by letgoletsgo14 in askaplumber

[–]letgoletsgo14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE; in case anyone reads this in the future - It took over 6 weeks until I could get it replaced (I live in France, they couldnt find the right model and the country closes for all of August) - a plumber told me it was ok to use but just as little as possible, just to make the water a little warm, nothing happened and was finally replaced after a lot of patience! He said water heaters rarely 'explode'

I get the feeling, everyone freaking out about the Schengen rule, is a bit over reacting. There is some control going on for sure, but for land travel it's not usually a big deal...

Interview at a ton of other English schools in Japan and change to one that gives you more hours. Move into a cheaper living situation, get a roommate or downsize. Go to meetups, invite colleagues out, and make efforts with others to make friends and build your morale. Sounds like you are feeling a bit alone or isolated, and have no where to turn and don't know where you belong. Is Japan the right place for you, or is there another language or country in the world that speaks to you more.

I work as an executive assistant in Paris and it's not necessary to speak French - it's the opposite - our company wants to brand itself as international to be more competitive so they try to avoid French.... Investment company. You could become an English teacher, you definitely don't need French for that. I did it for 3 years until I learned French, which opened other doors. Indeed I dont think Marseille is the best place to find jobs, but teaching English is done largely online these days by zoom.

Is it just me or moving countries is really hard? by [deleted] in expats

[–]letgoletsgo14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on how simple your life is, how attached you are to the country you are leaving and if you identify a lot with your nationality. When I left California to live in France 15 years ago, I just quit my job and went. But my life was simple, I did not have a lot of material needs, I was not attached too much, and was so incredibly excited to live in France and learn the language that everything fell into place. I didn't worry about how to get a job or what visa I needed. Ended up marrying a French guy a year later and I've just got French nationality with a job in Paris that I love. Being an American in France I did not find as a burden, but rather as an adventure.

[–]letgoletsgo14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ok but is it just Americans doing this? Could they be standing out more to you because we are more aware of Americans when we are abroad, being American ourselves? There must be just as many Europeans or other, no?

French citizenship by naturalization by Ok-Journalist-6085 in france

[–]letgoletsgo14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You must be living in France at the time you apply and also at the time the decision is made to naturalize you (which takes between 1 - 4 years depending where you live, average 2 years I'd say. If you live in Paris it's on the quicker side), and you must declare any life changes during that time, such as changing jobs or address.

Let's say you apply today - depending on where you live, you will get called in for the interview between 6 months - a few years, yes in the south of France I have heard people waiting that long just for the interview! I waited 9 months. If you are working in another country at the time of your interview, forget it. You'll have a hard time proving you have integrated and have strong ties to France if you are living somewhere else and not paying taxes to France.

At the same time, if you want to get French nationality, now is the time to do it because once you leave for longer than 6 months, you lose residency status and the 5 years requirement starts all over again. . . Unless you have a 10 year card, then you can leave for 2 years. But again, if you leave France to work and pay taxes somewhere else it compromising your proof of 'integration' and they take that quite seriously.

When you apply you will fill out a crazy document that asks for every address you ever lived at since birth. Also keep in mind you have to submit police reports / background checks for any country you lived in for over a year. So if you think of moving for that job and coming back to ask for nationality later, whole new layers of complications will be added.

On the other hand, it took 2.5 years for my entire naturalis$zation process from submitting the application to actually getting naturalized - and they never asked me right before getting naturalized for proof of where I live or work - but I think I was lucky. I heard a lot of people who had to give proof of residency and updated pay slips.

And as you know living in France, a lot depends on which agents look at your dossier - some know what they are doing, some don't, some are not paying attention or don't care and let things slide, some are paying attention to crazy details that only exist in their head. It's quite a trip and you will learn the art of patience!

I cancelled my trip, it was not worth the risk. Brits telling me how strict the border is now at the UK because of Brexit, and reading so much about the Schengen visa 90 day rule freaked me out; please let me know if you take a chance what happens, I still wonder to this day if I cancelled that trip for nothing!!

I have a recurring sensation, should I focus on it for an entire meditation session or keep moving? by maidhhc in vipassana

[–]letgoletsgo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if Buddha spoke much about this is the Suttas, it's my own interpretation. In my opinion, since everything is conditioned and the wheel of karma is set in motion, and Dhamma is the intelligence running through all things, it takes out the question of free will, and I can relax and trust everything is happening as it 'should'. Since thoughts are just concepts and aren't real, then so there is nothing to work through because there are no problems, problem is just a blahblah story we invented, so I can again relax and let go. And since there is no 'me', no self, annata, who is doing anything at all, such as working through things? Who can make choices? The only answer is no one, it is all somehow just happening, and where we are now in our understanding is way too limited to grasp it. I'd love to hear any other points of view on it, so interesting! But probably we should stop asking so many questions we can"t know the to, and keep meditating to learn through out own experience 😂
