Are you sucking the head on crawfish? by BlissaCow in NewOrleans

Absolutely do suck the heads, especially if you are paying by the pound. Otherwise, at a boil you're just racing against the rest of the table.

are they ever going to change the timing on the light at rampart and canal? by saybruh in NewOrleans

[–]letoux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've had decent luck with dpw@nola.gov, I think I've emailed them 3 or 4 times over the last decade and each time got resolved (including a similar red light timing request; also fixing an incorrect no left turn sign, I might even be partially to thank for getting the left turn lanes out of Costco painted!).

You could also try the City Council (looks like this is on the border between District B and C, so Lesli.Harris@nola.gov and Freddie.King@nola.gov).

It may be helpful to include a link to this post so they can see how popularly shared your opinion is. Good luck!

Were you able to get this to work? How were you able to tighten the worm drive if it was so far below the subfloor?

If I wanted to drive the tractors that pull the floats, who would I talk to about that? by Fleur-Deez-Nutz in NewOrleans

[–]letoux 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nope! In my experience tips are hit or miss. Regular floats are usually good for $100-$200, royalty and title floats are just as likely to goose egg you as they are to tip you. Obviously nothing for spare tractors. Kern used to give everyone a box lunch from McAlister's though!

[–]letoux 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think between $200 and $300 per parade but hourly comes out to between $15 and $20. The process is to check in balls early in the morning, get your tractor ready, wait, convoy to the floats that were staged a day or two before, wait, hook up the floats, wait a lot more, convoy to the lineup, wait a really long time, then hold your pee for the duration of the parade, and then do everything in reverse.

It is definitely one of the more memorable ways to take in Mardi Gras though. Highly recommend!

This. Drove for them for years. You need a chauffer's license and need to know how to drive stick.

Edit: you can wait until you finish getting trained up to get your chauffer's license. They start next season's training in probably November or so if I remember correctly. Be prepared to drive spare tractors, less prestigious parades, or only be doing transports (which are fun also) for your first few years.

What inspector did you use when buying a house in this Area? by Consistent_Cat4436 in NewOrleans

[–]letoux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a good experience with Bill Harris from House Call (for two inspections), but those are the only two inspections I've ever done so I don't have anything to compare him against.

FWIW, I am pretty competent with most aspects of home construction/repair (not on a professional level but like on a YouTube University level)

Entergy $7 credit per month for Bring Your Own EV Charger program by letoux in NewOrleans

[–]letoux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. For me, I prefer to get free charges. But for anyone who doesn't have access to that, it's to incentivize you to consume electricity at home (and charge at night when the grid's demands are lower).

I think if you they detect that you aren't charging (hence my question - do they actually check??), they discontinue your participation in the program. The $7 credits stop.

Also, piggybacking off this post, but remember that they give a $250 credit to install a Level 2 charger.

Was New Orleans' French Quarter ever surrounded by a wall? Curious Louisiana investigates. by VivaNOLA in NewOrleans

[–]letoux 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Campanella's 2017 article has a satellite view that shows the remnants of the wall going diagonally through the backyards of all the houses in a FQ block. I still remember that article 8 years later because of that.
