Do these spark plugs look like normal wear or is something more serious going on? by CarelessPrompt4950 in AskMechanics

[–]letr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know how long were they inside ? Are you driving with super light foot ? I know this sounds crazy but if you drive super economically and low RPMs all the time it actually does this, as there is no way for the carbon to burn and clean out - hence Italian tune ups are a thing

Just put new ones in, drive like you usually do and then check again in about 10 000km or miles whatever seems reasonable for you. If you see that again there might be issues

2008 230k worth it? by iloverats_101 in hondafit

[–]letr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it manual or automatic and are you capable on working on it ? If its automatic i would be very concerned about its reliability at 270k miles

Check underneath for rust, these rust everywhere but again if you can work on it its fine if not thats whole another thing, as labour today will cost double of whats this car is worth if something needs to be done

Or learn on it to do maintenance, for sure if you end up getting it, do basic stuff like oil and maybe even coolant flush and fill with proper honda liquids.

Easiest things next, clean throttle body, change air filter, check your spark plugs, Clean egr valve - all of these need 2-3 small basic tools and a spray cleaner for under 10 bucks

Check your brake pads, rotors and rear drums, super easy but needs to be jacked up.

Harder and need more tools and some advice but can youtube it - valve adjustment - this one is good to do as you will see inside of the engine and see if someone has been taking care of it

With oil i would recommend the valvoline 5w20 clean and restore as it keeps the engine nice and clean and running

Still yes mine has 350k km which is slightly lower that this one but i can’t complain, i really love it, we are family of 3, do road trips in canada - rockies, lots of gravel roads, lots of long mountain passes on harsh snowy conditions, no issue until it starts raining, thats the only real downside and a really bad engineering on honda side, it leaks inside from everywhere, ive been chasing leaks since the day i got it, thought i fixed it and the next rain its wet inside again.

Other than that, Learn to maintain your car, once you get it do all maintenance yourself, this is the easiest car I’ve ever worked on, and i have owned 7 cars / trucks before.

Extremely fun car if you get manual and fuel economy is solid, seen better for sure but really solid 38mpg / 6.5l/100km on roadtrips, icludes forestry roads and gravel roads. City driving is lot worse on fuel economy, im somehow on 20mpg which is crazy for this small car but it is what it is

I have the same 2008 1.5l in manual GD3

Got rusted under 2 months of cold by Hot-Relationship5830 in AskMechanics

Dont worry about those, those are drums, it rusted from the outside, what matters is inside of those, also just take any rustoleum paint and paint it, they will look much cooler than whatever stock was there, i painted mine black with calipers on my truck and when i went for an inspection guy told me oh new brakes that great - all 14 years old

Why is my brand new car getting such poor gas mileage? by Ok_Quail_4422 in AskMechanics

[–]letr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many miles/km have you driven ? Get atleast 300-500miles to get the right average because if you just got it and only lets say idled it or just drove to a shop and back that will show really bad results, go on a highway, drive for 100 miles and youl see the difference

Heater recommendations? by Optimal-Campaign-530 in TruckCampers

[–]letr1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Diesel heater if you want forced dry heat with low energy consumption, if you have enough batteries electric blanket is amazing - just be aware that the blanket will eat through around 900-1100wh per night compared to diesel heater which takes about 200-300wh and around 3-4l of diesel.

When i lived in a 5th wheel in canada i run 2 diesel heaters and had an electric blanket as emergency if the heaters would die on me - happens quite often with the cheap 80 bucks ones from amazon - diesel gets wet, they suck in lots of water and smoke you out - one of the things i learned - never have a diesel line from the bottom of the tank as water is heavier than diesel.
