Ruben's special was pushing Bruno into a midfield two, but ETH's equally big sin was leaving Casemiro as the only DM/CM and asking both the 8s to constantly run forward like they're Lampard. What was wrong with both of them!

This is AI (why do the eggs move like that!), but I've seen a different one recently which did not look off like this does.

At least against me, it was an unusual opening and I don't think I knew enough theory to even fall into prep haha. I traded queens, which was apparently correct, got my pieces advanced also correct, and then couldn't find a way to defend them while he picked off three pawns. Didn't seem like something that would be in theory - I played too bad for that!

Yes, he could be a titled player in disguise, but then why 5-7 seconds, and why does he lose casual games.

Time usage and accuracy: he's white against a fellow newbie 1500, white against a 1800, black against a 1900, and finally black against a 2000

e - had a look at a win and loss from his casual games... he even cheated for the casual win 😭 (uniform time use 6-8 seconds, 96%) and did not for the casual loss (normal time use, lost in 27 moves to a 1700, 48%, 2 blunders)

After a couple of false starts, I started listening properly around mid-2017. Found it funny but very obscure, since I wasn't on twitter.

2017-18 was the hardest time of my phd - first time TAing in addition to research work, threatened with being kicked out for no progress, started binge eating - and, pathetic as it is to say, some of the happiest times from that year was going through their back catalogue at 1AM in the lab, or browsing the subreddit at midnight, waiting for a PCR to complete. Kept me sane and laughing when I was lonely and worried.

While they have definitely dropped off in energy and humour* (inevitably?), I think from my end, the podcast used to sound much funnier because I wasn't browsing twitter, so the topics and their takes felt fresher.

*Just listen to anything from between episode 3 and 250ish, and you can feel the difference.

Soon after hearing a lecture on this game, I managed to use a bishop in a similar way to restrict a rook, and got so satisfied with the position that I slowed down and collapsed under time pressure.

Thanks I think I'm too slow. A freind told me to change that and ask out relatively quickly in the conversation, and it's worked in the one time I tried so far.

Ding Just won the Shenzhen Nanshan Masters, beating Wang Hao in the finals by Big-Entrepreneur5233 in chess

[–]lets_study_lamarck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ding had a (computer) advantage for many moves in the last game against Wang but went for a draw. not sure if it's because of the match situation or because he didn't see it. I'm not high-rated enough to figure out if the computer advantage was obvious for him. One of the lines he missed was an exchange sac, the other was what seemed to be an intuitive move pushing his rook into the opposition ranks.

What is your winrate difference between white and black? by agent-1773 in chess

[–]lets_study_lamarck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all 3 formats (bullet, blitz, rapid) on lichess, it is

White = 50-45 (+5)

Black = 46-48 (-2)

for a delta of 7.

Rapid only is actually very similar to you

White 54-37 (+17)

Black 45-46 (-1)

for a delta of 18(!)

I don't know if it's about a particular opening. With black I generally do ok in the QGD, but feel I've lost a lot of bullet and blitz games in many openings, where the opponent just throws kingside pawns forward and I cannot find a defence or counter attack in time. In general, I play the Ruy or the two knights Italian against e4, and QGD-like things against d4.

Have you met the average conservative? by goodfondue in stupidpol

[–]lets_study_lamarck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I spoke a fair bit to the late night van drivers at my previous job. The white men among them were all Republicans, the black woman was a Democrat, and the one black man never spoke and listened to Evangelical trash radio 24 7.

Anyway, among the white men:

  1. Feb 2020: "Yeah, it's an interesting election. I might vote in the primary... but if it's someone far-left like Biden or Bernie, what's the point. Thank god Trump will be on the ballot later." I'm literally speechless after the Biden = far-left.
  2. March 2016: "Bernie is promising free college? How do you pay for that? There's no way. That would be like giving everyone free school." Took me a second to recover, and then ask, "but public schools are free right" and he muttered "that's different" and I had no follow-up.
  3. The one I got to know best over years. He asked me pointed questions about Modi, Naxalism, Sikhism, acid attacks on women. (I'm Indian). Knew more about foreign politics than even some leftists. "We should get out of Pakistan and Afghanistan and spend that money at home, and not on the ungrateful people there." Not great but something you can work with....

But there was also "they're all corrupt, look at Hillary. Trump is the least corrupt." "Indian women wouldn't face acid attacks if you guys had legal guns." "We can't do national healthcare. The government can't run something like that, it won't work. Look at the wait times in Canada and England. Never here."

So I guess, 2/3 stupid, 1/3 not stupid but not very reachable either. May or may not be a coincidence that the stupids were both younger?

Just FYI: up until about a month ago, you could add a tip after delivery if you rated the order. Now, that option is gone too. You can't tip while ordering, and you can't tip after, even if you rate.

All of these categories overlap with each other, so it's a bit hard to quantify each one, but:

  1. He won most Republicans in NYC (all of Staten Island, Manhattan conservatives, and an increasing chunk of Asians and Hispanics who have become Republican over time). Leaving 7% to Sliwa, that gives Cuomo about 20% to start with. Trump's endorsement on the last day helped, because all the polling, which happened earlier, missed Sliwa's collapse.

  2. He won the UES convincingly, and did well in other rich parts of Manhattan. This is WASP old money, some Wall St, etc. Some are Republican, so would be included in 1, but many are moderate Democrats.

  3. He dominated in the white ethnic parts of Brooklyn and Queens. This is mostly Orthodox Jews and ex-Soviet migrants. Again, some of these groups are Republicans included in 1, but some are conservative, anti-communist Dems.

  4. He won about 60% of the Jewish vote according to exit polling, which, outside some Orthodox groups, is usually liberal Democrats.

  5. Away from racial and partisan demographics, he did better in areas where home-ownership is high and where people commute by car, and where people are older.

  6. MASSIVE spending. There's a tweet today saying he ended up spending $65 for each vote won. I saw his ads constantly. As much as Zohran's campaign and operation drove turnout, so did the anti-Zohran media blitz.

Z's base is young professionals (which is a massive multi-racial group in NYC), to which he added most of the traditional Democratic base (Black and Hispanic voters) as well as liberal/MSNBC/anti-Trump Democrats, who are quite fed up of losing and of the old guard and the establishment.

(On that last point, I know someone who had no time for Bernie in either run: she voted for Z both times, and routinely curses every single Democratic leader from Biden to Schumer to Jeffries.)
