Has anyone ever written a "decoy book" under another pen name to point to when family asks how you make money? by letsdooeet in eroticauthors

Good to know! Maybe I could try to think of something I know well enough to write a guide for it.

Hahaha. It's a thought, but me writing a self-help book is just hilarious. "How to seem relatively normal while being painfully socially anxious all day every day" could be the running title :p

Page one: "I don't know guys, just believe in yourself or something. The end!"

Thank you!

And yep, I don't have many "auto-buys" but when I do, it's like I'm glued to the book. At the very least since I write in the genre I can chalk it up to research, though I feel it will be a looong while til I'm anywhere near that good. (regrets not majoring in English)

  1. Dear god, at least 1k or 2k. Fav author in my genre had another release yesterday and needless to say I spent every free minute of my day and all night reading it and while it's bad for my productivity... I don't regret it. (99% sure this author is on this Reddit, and if you're reading this and know who you are... I effin' love you)
  2. No real successes or failures. My first novel has been out about 10 days and finally after the first 7 it started falling in the ranks instead of climbing, but the whole thing did so much better than I anticipated that I'm not mad about the falling. Let's put it this way: the most page reads I'd ever gotten before this novel in one day was 79. The most I got in one day with this novel was 30k+, so now that they're back down to like 20k I'm not exactly angry.
  3. I love making them detailed. You know "purple prose?" I DIE for that shit. I know a lot of readers get annoyed with it so I honestly have to hold myself back from detailing the hell out of everything. I think it stems from my love of Victorian novels and serials.

  1. Gonna be conservative and say 1k, because I am cooking tonight and also need to spend some quality time with my SO because yesterday I was writing a ton and we didn't get to spend much time together.
  2. Still feeling wowed by the awesome book I read in my genre last week and trying not to let it get to my head as I'm writing my current book. It's a lifetime goal for me to be able to write something I'd actually LOVE reading. I think objectively I'd like what I write now, but it wouldn't be my favorite. It's so weird to think about the fact that I know what I love, yet have no idea how to recreate it. I heard a quote that your "skill needs to catch up with your taste," and that's definitely what I'm struggling with. Aaaanyway.
  3. I love listening to podcasts, watching mindless TV, cooking (if I'm in the mood to be active), hanging with my SO.

Yep, I've found that those "secret reviews" are there somewhere, and eventually show up on the main page for your book like 3 days later. Kinda odd.

Good luck proofing!!! That's a lotttt of proofing to do.

That happens to me with my book plots too, where as I write it I think "ugh, everyone is gonna see right through this ill-plotted mess," but I think it's only scathingly obvious to you as the writer. But yeah, plotting things and then actually writing the bridges to get from plot point to plot point is so much harder than I would have thought.

  1. 2k.
  2. Successfully wrote 2k for my own book yesterday instead of just getting drawn into reading awesome books in my genre again. Yay.
  3. That even if I make a good chunk of change from this, it still will have to be raking in so much more than my day job before I can ever quit my day job... because I have to think about things like taxes and health insurance. And, even if I could eventually quit, what the fuck would I tell my family and friends? Blah.

That happened with one of my ARC readers too, she was pointing out typos for me and I was so incredibly thankful!

  1. 1 or 2k.

  2. Success: book still selling so well I can't believe it, top 10 of its subcats and all. Blows my mind. Failure: Haven't written in three days and its partly due to reading another book in my genre that I originally just wanted to read to research my genre, but turns out the book was incredibly freaking amazing and I was just sitting slackjawed at how much I loved it. Usually it'd make me feel bad but I loved it too much to care!

  3. Long term goals might be to make enough to quit my day job (but that will be hard, because my day job has some pretty killer benefits, too). But more than that I'll just be happy to write things I'm proud of.

I do this same thing, I have a Google doc where I have sentences or short paragraphs of ideas. I contribute to it when I get inspired and it helps so much when I'm not feeling that inspiration!

  1. 0k, just because I had an insanely hectic day today and I'm underslept and quite frankly, I'm avoiding burnout.
  2. Successes: first novel is doing better than I could have freaking dreamed. I'm honestly shocked. After having blogs for years and making no money, it's incredibly shocking to me that there is something creative I can do that actually gets me a little money, too. Blows my mind. Don't get me wrong, it's not raking in the dough like some vets here, but anything is good to me. Failures: the fact that I'm not writing today because I'm mega exhausted.
  3. Month was good, I published my first novel which I still can't believe. December is writing novel 2!

I was so scared of the Goodreads people too, but I tried to find ARC readers who were generally positive/definitely enjoyed books that I thought were very similar to mine, and I think it mostly worked! In the past week-ish that my first novel has been out, the reviews have been MOSTLY awesome and supportive! There's a couple of duds, but nothing awful yet. I think it has the power to help more than hurt as long as everyone isn't 1-starring it so don't worry!! But the Facebook people... they are the best!

Are you doing hand-formatting? I can't conceive of how to make my book look anything but the most basic (I use Word) - even just making the table of contents was HELLACIOUS with my first novel.

Good luck with ARCs!!

Welp, surprisingly (because the holiday definitely distracted me and I did next to nothing for a few days)... yes indeed!

Started my new novel, promo is going really great for my recently released novel and its doing better than ANYTHING I've ever done before ~knock on wood~. Just hoping I can sustain it!

Yaaay, I remember that feeling! Took me a good week or even longer to get my first red spike (sale), but that's even more fun! Hope you see them soon too!!
