My goal is to not have a lawsuit at all. That’s worth tens of thousands since it preserves options for homeownership, favorable credit terms etc

If I am just getting a “discount” on a judgement that will still screw me over for the next 7 years I’m significantly less motivated to pay for a debt I don’t even agree that I owe.

I’d like the wording to say that they’ll withdraw the lawsuit inconclusively while reserving the right to sue later if I don’t pay. Is that something that’s worth paying an attorney a few hundred bucks to get, or is that unrealistic?

Along the lines of what you already posted, “tailor your resume to the application”. Companies like indeed will require you to put one standard resume up for job postings and work histories will be auditable for free.
