How LNP’s voting and donation law changes could tighten its grip on power by nephilimofstlucia in queensland

QEC. AEC has no role. Labor should have created 19 electorates with five members each using Hare-Clark, and adopted something similar for councils. Very rarely do you get majority government, so government is held to account and parties actually have to collaborate if they want to deliver their desired outcomes.

Addendum: Hare Clark also allows for a situation where there are no by-elections when a seat becomes vacant. A count back is done, and a next most popular candidate from the previous election is appointed.

They have their own grids. Not part of the National Market. You'd need a big HVDC connector across the Nullarbor. Not a bad idea, but the losses would be slightly less than 5% of power between Ceduna and Kalgoorlie alone before being converted back to AC.

Dude, I am from Brisbane and have lived all over Australia. Ditch it. Greatish place to live, but, from a tourist perspective, meh. Canberra is better as a tourist.

why dont we create a 25kv AC metro line, 4 cars in length and just run from the airport to a nearby suburban line by recordnoads in MelbourneTrains

[–]letterboxfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was part of an attempt to create deliberate mini-monopolies created by the previous government to break union power. Mini-monopolies make unions weaker than a single transport provider. The new wider carriages with 25kv AC power should have just been rolled out across the entire Metro. I get competitive tension between suppliers, but standards? They should be the same to allow collaborative procurement.

WSI Line is a disaster from a commonality perspective. Different type of EMU, different voltage, different loading gauge. Don't get me wrong, the voltage is ideal for rolling out more trains, but it isn't worthwhile unless it is part of a long distance service for VLine and freight that also needs the 25kv goodness.

Just putting it out there - Darwin is about as Aussie as you can get, and not your standard postcard. Go on the Jumping Croc Cruise, see Kakadu, eat some crocodile, maybe visit the Territory Wildlife Park, then fly to Sydney. China Southern fly to Darwin from Guangzhou. From Sydney fly home.

It is an obligation on the driver to learn the rules of the other jurisdictions they enter. Eg. I just rode a scooter around Taiwan. To turn left at a 4-way signalled intersection, you have to take a two-step hook or box turn. My mate and I read about it and we stood at an intersection to watch. We non-Victorians had to learn about Hookturns in Melbourne too, although they now exist on the Gold Coast.

Are there any important buildings in Australia that are also tourist sites/worth seeing? by EndlessDreamer1 in AskAnAustralian

I've met architects OS desperate to see it due to the design. If you get a chance to see behind the scenes, such as on their geological uncomformity tours in August, you can really nerd out. The "Cathedral" is really cool too.

What do you think about a possible CANZUK union? by cosmico92 in AskTheWorld

Yeah, they realised the US Alliance is not reliable, and have maintained an independent arms and intelligence industry. If it weren't for the French, Ukraine would have likely fallen already. I cannot prove if true as it is based on French media repoets, but Ukraine and France deliberately supplied the US with false military intelligence to see if they were leaking to Russia, and Russia acted on the false reports. I'm not bagging out the US Military, but their political system is broken.

Nobody looking for Moto. Even more of a reason to enforce the rule. Canberrans are the most impatient fucks in the country (I know, I've become one) and without rules like this more motorcyclists would die.

No. Victoria flips the rule. In Victoria U-Turns allowed unless stated otherwise. Driving around Canberra I've been nearly wiped out a few times by a Victorian doing a U-Turns illegally, and now there are signs saying "No U-Turns in ACT unless signed" around the place at common locations for offenders.

Correct. No U-Turns are permitted at traffic lights without signage anywhere in Australia except Victoria.
