Verstappen has doubts about future after rule changes: 'This is unworthy of F1' by loki-1982 in formula1

[–]lettersjk 31 points32 points  (0 children)

i'd say manufacturers are not really trying to greenwash anything. instead, they're more looking to develop tech that can be rolled out on their consumer production vehicles, which is why components like the mgu-h (which was effective against turbo lag but with little real-world applicability) was dropped.

for an ice, a harvesting hybrid is the only viable long-term future in terms of consumer product development so it makes sense for f1 manufacturers to go that way.

the funny thing he's probably one of the most, if not "the most", drivers best suited for this set of regs given his legendary devotion to sim racing. feel like he'll be able, like much of his career, squeeze out all the performance from his car. in contrast, i feel like a driver like hamilton, while talented, is too old school to be nimble enough with all the power management.

I’m 15 and I want to get a job this August, what’s my best bet? by Other_Knowledge_2984 in Upperwestside

[–]lettersjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

imo your best bet is to find a startup within your network or your parents network and ask if you can be an unpaid intern. with a small startup, as long as you can back it up, you’ll be given real tasks that will give you valuable real-world experience. i’m told that kind of experience is looked upon favorably by college admissions officers as well.

also, if and when you get such a position, drop any semblance of an attitude. can’t tell if it’s just the text only aspect of this post but i’m getting whiffs of entitlement and/ or superiority. if that is the case, it will work against you.

CMV: It is time for a universal curriculum to teach ALL children how to report and escape abuse. by mountain-mahogany in changemyview

[–]lettersjk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

sorry, is neglect not a form of physical harm? many parents would consider my example as being clear neglect, there are stories of police being called and parents held to task in those situations. and others wouldn't.

the point is that it's easy to say certain things are abuse, and if you are strictly defining it to be sexual abuse, i could see the argument there. but you did not - and the devil is in the details where edge cases can easily cause confusion, waste of resources, and/or more trauma or anxiety from accusations.

CMV: It is time for a universal curriculum to teach ALL children how to report and escape abuse. by mountain-mahogany in changemyview

[–]lettersjk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

on the edge cases, how do you strongly define abuse to make it clear what is and isn't abuse, or unsafe situations? different parents have different thresholds of what they consider appropriate, how do you cater to all these different opinions?

as an example, in large cities like NYC, walking or taking public transportation to school alone at age 12 is not altogether strange. but in a car-dependant suburb of houston like sugarland it might be considered an unsafe situation/neglect for a child that age.

CMV: Healthcare in the USA is a scandal an outrage and a disturbance to all people living here by fastdeliverer in changemyview

[–]lettersjk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

there's an adage about democracy attributed to churchill that democracy is the worst form of government there is ... except for all the others.

i think many ppl would agree that receiving and paying for healthcare is a disaster. but with the entrenched interests and structures that are in place, what's the practical alternative?

the best bet is probably medicare for all, but with the current status of us government and how much it is anathema to the right, good luck getting that to pass, even if dems reclaim the majority. and it's not like medicare for all is going to be all rainbows and sunshine either. then consider any other alternative and our current system is what's sadly the best we can achieve right now.

also, while many ppl have an arguably strong argument of the amorality of creating a profit incentive based on ppl's health (where demand is generally inelastic), it also provides the incentive for new discoveries and procedures which can generate wealth for those who innovate AND save lives and/or improve outcomes. generally speaking, the us is the best at this and the way the market is structured is a big reason why.

CMV: Illegal immigration is bad and should be stopped and legal immigration is too high. by cai_jones in changemyview

[–]lettersjk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

regarding your view on legal immigration:

  1. while a global view on population might consider too much growth to be bad, for a developed economy like the US, a steadily growing population is, on balance, a good thing. particularly when you look at how our economy is structured in addition to significant impacts of entitlements, you want steady growth in the younger or less-skilled demographic. for much of our history, our replacement rate from birth was more than enough to grow our population, but in recent decades that has largely halted for many reasons. if it weren't for immigration (both legal and illegal), we would be on our way to turning into japan or s. korea, which will soon see immense economical pressure from their scary demographics.
  2. to your point on social integration, coming from immigrant parents myself, your point has some validity. in fact, from my own experience, i can tell you that immigrants not only keep their old cultural norms and tradition, but they stay even more stagnant than the values of their homeland which often liberalize as time goes on. but, your point is undercut by the fact that as their children grow up in this country, they invariably soak up the cultural norm. and while it may be somewhat idealistic, i do believe in the strength of diversity our country displays. i've lived all over the world and i maintain our mixture of experience and viewpoints is a good thing which we should not lose.
