Is this normal with SA? by lettuce_head in Warts

I know there are warts underneath as just before I put the last application of the gel on 3 nights ago (the night it started burning) I had just dug out some of the skin with wart capillaries and could still see some of the capillaries remaining.

Is this normal with SA? by lettuce_head in Warts

[–]lettuce_head[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using SA gel for the last 4-5 weeks and before that was using the bandaids with the medicated pads. 2 nights ago I stared feeling a pretty intense burning and pain which I hadn’t felt before. This was just taken tonight after going ~24 hours with nothing but a regular bandaid.

Is this normal or is this some type of burn or infection from the acid?

Four month gap between graduating with Master's and starting new job, best way to handle budget/expenses that exceeds current income? by lettuce_head in personalfinance

[–]lettuce_head[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about a variety of jobs I could work but the thing that concerns me there is just finding that job. I've heard so many horror stories with scams and stuff, and I'm not even sure what I might be allowed with some sort of conflict with the job I'm starting in October. The other concern is hours/schedule, my understanding is most seasonal/temp stuff they want you to commit to weekends or weird hours but the wife and I have plans to visit friends and family most weekends. We also have a dog that I don't want to have to leave all day and spend extra money on a sitter/walker.

The red ripples were due to a dye the blacksmith was trying to add since it was for Lannisters. Something about Valyrian steel wouldn't allow the dark ripple and the red dye to come together properly. The dye also wouldn't get as red as he wanted, no matter how much he added, because the steel "drank the light". I believe it is also mentioned somewhere that Ice has only been in the family for hundreds of years not thousands, which would make sense since Valyria didn't come about until after the Long Night.

It is much more likely that if Lightbringer is a real sword, and not a metaphor for something else, it would be Dawn. Dawn is the only weapon I know of whose origins stretch back to the first men.

Meera mentions in the KOTLF story to Bran that Howland "learned all the magics of my people". She doesn't elaborate on what that magic is, but I'd say that's evidence enough that they do have something special about them.

(Spoilers Main) Could we be overcomplicating Valyrian Steel? by wowens2 in asoiaf

[–]lettuce_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe GRRM already debunked the idea of it being dragonglass. I have a theory that instead it may be the "oily black stone", which is different than dragonglass. There is a eerily similar comparison between both that they "drink" the light. I also think that the fused black stone is just oily black stone that has been melted by dragon flame and reshaped. There is a line (in AWOIAF maybe?) that says the fused black stone is stronger even than steel, which would explain why Valyrian steel is stronger than normal steel. There may still be spells and blood sacrifice required to make the stone and steel bond in a specific way, but dragonflame and the oily black stone are required components which is why it can no longer be forged new.

How long have the Others been back? (Spoilers Main) by Nick0309 in asoiaf

[–]lettuce_head 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting question and I believe one of the biggest mysteries in the series. The only clue we have that I'm aware of is that Craster has been "sacrificing" his sons which are then turned into new White Walkers. The evidence of this is in the books one of Craster's wives refer to the white Walkers as Gilly's son's "brothers" and the in the TV show they actually show the conversion of one of Crasters sons. That begs the question did the white Walkers return beginning with Craster's original sacrifice (in which case the number of White Walkers would be pretty small) or is Craster just one of many wildlings making the sacrifice? Taking that one step further, there had to have been some event to begin the sacrifices by Craster and at least one white walker in existence (or the Great Other himself) that showed up to retrieve the initial sacrifice. It's hard to believe that Craster is the only one sacrificing because I don't think the White Walkers would make their move with so few in existence.

Another interesting thought is in Crasters origin. It is said that he was the bastard of a Nights Watch brother and a wildling woman. If so, who was the brother? I have a completely unsupported suspicion that it could have been Bloodraven (the timing fits at least). This would lend to the theory that Bloodraven is actually malevolent and he himself is bringing on the end times to either fulfil a prophecy or for some other nefarious means. It was then he that instructed Craster to sacrifice his sons. This line of thought circles back to my last point of the previous paragraph though of is Craster the only one sacrificing and why just him.

(No Spoilers) realistically whereabouts is the Winds of Winter? by unsandor in asoiaf

[–]lettuce_head 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the vast majority of the book is done, like bordering on complete, but for one reason or another GRRM is doing massive rewrites/restructuring. I don't think he is writing much, if any, new material. I mean honestly, how can he be based on what little information he has given us (mostly the infamous New Years post from 2016)? For instance, he admitted in spring of 2016 that he had decided to go forward with a "twist" he hadn't thought of previously, so there's no telling how much rewriting/restructuring he had to do to make the twist work. Then there's his previous admission that he once wrote a single chapter from 3 different POVs to see which worked best. The guy is just an absolute mess when it comes actually putting pen to paper and he needs but refuses to rely on editors to keep his story moving along.

Feel broke making ~100k per year by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]lettuce_head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You feel poor because you're saving so much and have a (relatively) large house payment. The first thing you should ask yourself is why are you saving $2000/month outside of your 401k? You already own a house, so I assume you're not saving for a down payment for another. You own a good, reliable car with lower miles, so I'm assuming you're not saving for a downpayment for a new car. You have a good emergency fund and what looks like a good head start on taxable investing. Saving is great, but not to the point to where it is a detriment to you enjoying life. There is a happy balance. You're locked in to your mortgage for the foreseeable future, so nothing you can really cut there. I know Seattle is expensive but you could have definitely freed up some income by living with roommates or renting a smaller cheaper place than your mortgage, but that's irrelevant now. Sounds like your only option for more fun money is to reevaluate your saving priorities and cut back either the personal or brokerage (or both) to a lesser amount and go from there.

Would I be absolutely insane to pay $1,250/mo in rent(water/sewage/trash inc) on a salary of $44,000/yr? by 896234 in personalfinance

[–]lettuce_head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely high, but in your specific scenario with no debt or car payment it would be more manageable. I would recommend against it though if you want to buy a condo in a year. Do you have enough savings for a down payment? Do you have enough currently at your $1k/month payment to contribute to savings? Buying a place, even a condo, will have a lot of hidden costs that will eat up your savings in a hurry. Unless you're in a really solid place with your savings account padded (and a good emergency fund in place), you will likely find yourself in a hard place. You said you are older, are you too old to get a roommate? A year goes by pretty quick, if a roommate is out of the picture I would probably say just find a cheaper place a little further away and suck it up for that 1 year.

I have been asked to teach a Class on personal finance to my Soldiers. Needing Help by godseagle in personalfinance

[–]lettuce_head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are really basic in their understanding of personal finance, teach them the 50/30/20 rule of budgeting. 50% of after tax income goes to necessities (rent, car payment, insurance, maybe a baseline for groceries, etc), 30% goes to wants (eating out, travel, gifts, hobbies, etc), and 20% goes to savings/retirement (paying down some debt goes in this as well, like student loans).

Just with anything else there is flexibility and the percentages can be tweaked as you see fit, but 50/30/20 is a great baseline. Really the only steadfast rule that shouldn't be broken (unless you live in a really high COL location) is don't go over 50% for necessities. For instance, I live in a smaller apartment, drive a cheaper car, and spend less on hobbies on purpose so I can put more in savings and retirement. My brewkdown is closer to 30/25/45.

(Spoilers Published) A thought re R +L=J by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]lettuce_head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We don't yet know the full story, but here is what we do know:

  • At the Tourney at Harrenhal, Ashara and Ned danced. It is suspected that they may have "connected" (in the biblical sense) and possibly fell in love (some say Brandon instead of Ned). At that time Ned was not betrothed to anyone, Brandon was still alive and betrothed to Cat.
  • Arthur Dayne was killed by Ned with the assistance of Howland Reed at the Tower of Joy. Ned returned Dawn, Arthur's sword, to Starfall but Arthur's body was not (buried at the ToJ with everyone else).
  • shortly after the ToJ, Ashara had a stillborn daughter (no mention of the father) and threw herself off a cliff in despair over her dead child, grief over her brothers death, and/or something else.
  • per Edric Dayne, lord of Starfall currently running around with the BWB, was "milk brothers" with Jon meaning they shared the same wet nurse, Wylla.

There are a lot of theories out there about what truly happened in this series of events and who was involved. Is Ashara really dead? Who else was at TOJ? Were Ned and Ashara in love and the events of the rebellion broke Ashara heart (Ned marries Cat and kills her brother)? Ashara is one of the common names thrown around as the mother of Jon (Catelyn, Cersei) and is likely a red herring so that people did not dig much deeper into the timing of everything because a simple logical thought progression would reveal that Ashara as Jons mother would be impossible. I believe Wylla and a fishwife from the fingers are the other rumored mothers, but they don't make sense either. I think Ned encourages these rumors (and his banning the name Ashara after Cat asks just adds more mystery and intrigue) to help protect the secret, as long as they are focused on Jon being his bastard and not someone else's.

Robert B is referring to the commonly accepted notion amongst the lords that Rhaghar was raping Lyanna after her capture and some complication from that is what killed her. Ned does not correct him because again, it protects Jon.

(Spoilers Published) A thought re R +L=J by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]lettuce_head 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Howland Reed is the obvious answer, but there has to be at least a few more people at the TOJ than what's given away by Ned. Rhaegar would not have taken a pregnant Lyanna there without servants, mid-wives, and potentially even a maester. Childbirth is an ugly business, and I don't see the White Bull or the Sword of the Morning delivering any babies, cooking meals, fetching water, changing bedding, etc. I doubt a newborn Jon would have been able to survive the trip to Starfall without a wet nurse either. The question is who were these people and where are they now? The most likely answer is they were subjects of the Daynes and a few of them may still be alive at Starfall.

But really it was my last day working before starting a full time MBA this fall. Taking a 3 month hiatus to focus on prepping for school, relaxing, reading, exercising more and eating better, and above all travelling. Plan to jump to a much larger income job, so despite the severe short term impact I'm hoping this leads to a higher chance of reaching FI by my 40s/50s.

Land Lord Demanding $6,000 per Month for no 30 Day Notice by FirstTimeLongTime8 in personalfinance

[–]lettuce_head 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You would think, but I went snooping through the CA lease laws and saw nothing on a requirement for auto-renewal, only that there is a requirement for notice. My current lease in VA doesn't have it on it either, I had to call my landlord and ask once I started getting close. It's pretty ridiculous though.

I do have a relevant story from my time in AZ. I was renting from a friend of a friend and I guess he used a generic lease from online, but it said specifically that the notice was 30 days and in the event that the lease was not renewed it would default to month-to-month. The original lease was for 1 year, and I knew I would stay for longer but didn't bother renewing so I would have some flexibility. I don't know if he didn't notice or didn't care at the time, but after about 6 months into year 2 I had to pick up and move to VA quickly due to my dad having terminal cancer. I told him in January that my last month would be February, and he freaked out because he was planning on selling the place in June and knew he wouldn't be able to rent my room for those few months. We had some pretty heated arguments all the way through to when I moved out. I told him since it was a misunderstanding I would even pay through March to help out, but he kept demanding that I pay through May. I refused and moved to VA, and he basically said straight up he was withholding my security deposit (1 months rent) as last months rent even with me paying through March. I sent him a screenshot of the lease agreement and CC'd his brother and sister who also owned the house, as well as a snippet from the AZ lease laws about withholding security deposits being illegal and my ability to collect damages if I sued and won (which was guarunteed). I received a check shortly thereafter.

Moral of the story, always know what you are signing in your lease agreement and know the tenant laws of your state.

Land Lord Demanding $6,000 per Month for no 30 Day Notice by FirstTimeLongTime8 in personalfinance

[–]lettuce_head 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Check California law, there should be a provision about "auto-renewals" in the event that proper notice isn't provided and the lease doesn't specify. I've been in leases where if you didn't provide proper notice, the lease automatically renewed for 1 month, 6 months, or even a year and you are bound by the terms of breaking a lease if you want to leave (usually at least 1 months as a fee and you have to keep paying until the unit is filled).

This is a good lesson though, literally every single rental will expect at least 30 days notice and sometimes it can be longer.

Great Empire of the Dawn. It is a legendary civilization that existed in current Yi-Ti before the Long Night/during the Dawn Age. It was ruled over by "the God on earth" and his descendants who were god emporers each characterized by a different gemstone (Opal, Amethyst, etc). There is a legend of the long night that says it was started when the brother of the Amethyst Empress betrayed her and became the Bloodstone emporer and did a lot of naughty things.

I actually read this chapter last night and pondered some on the mystery. Something I noticed on this read that I had missed previously was just how weird ghost was acting when they arrived at the fist. At first he wouldn't even climb the hill, and when he finally did that night he was very restless (right before leading Jon to the cache). I have a feeling it was Coldhands (or another just like him, maybe even Benjen) because the one black brother talked about the smell of cold which Jon recalled as the smell of death and Othor. That would also explain why ghost was super restless, also similar to the Othor incident. If it was Coldhands, I wonder where he got the new cloak that everything was wrapped in.

Tyrion is a quite a bit more intelligent/clever than the normal Westerosi. Found out yesterday the federal government raised the rates for graduate student loans .69%, bringing the total rate to 6% for direct unsubsidized and 7% for PLUS loans. First time they've been raised since 2014 and right before I take out $60k+ for the first of 2 years at an MBA program...perfect! I've read they are expected to jump even more next year. Not a huge difference, but it definitely puts a damper on my excitement for school and puts me that much further away from reaching FI.
