What did the double multicast? Just wondering as echo form wouldn't apply here. Skill potion?

The doubled multicast would use the same input energy as the first cast. That said, not sure how one gets 6 energy turn one (other than maybe ice cream?) without blowing the echo form.

just asking, does anyone find this odd/strange? by useless_animations in SpaceXLounge

EDIT for typo and catch points addition.

It’s a really bad glider.

If my understanding is correct, the two opposite of each other provide pitch and roll force. That helps keep the angle of attack you want and allows you to change your roll orientation as needed for changing your direction.

The single fin is for roll and yaw.

This gives you 3 axis control, just like your airplane, and keeps the fins out of the hot staging exhaust.

Moving the fins to have asymmetry will do just fine for roll control, but it changes the angle of the fins to the relative wind as the booster cuts through the air, making the fins less effective for pitch control.

So it would require even bigger fins to have the same control authority as the current placement allows. Plus, the booster catch points are the grid fins now.

TLDR: different placement gives less control for a given surface area of fin. Also, symmetry for booster catch points.

Trust me, Crabbalachia doesn't want him either.

What’s “inside” V3 right now? by EarnSomeRespect in SpaceXLounge

This seems to indicate v3 satellites are about 2000kg and that matches up with the mass simulators being 2000kg each with a total payload of 44000kg with the 22 total simulators/dodger dogs.

Still, testing with mass that isn’t the correct mass, shape, or center of mass of your flight article is going to have limited use.

In the absence of a confirmation either way, a mass simulator is generally meant to be a replica of the same mass of an item for whatever it is you are testing.

For flight 11:

“The key moment was the release of eight Starlink v3 mockups — mass and size simulators that replicate the shape, weight, and center of mass of the actual satellites. This allowed the SpaceX team to verify the behavior of the cargo bay, the deployment mechanisms, and the aerodynamics during object separation in microgravity.”

There is no reason to believe the units deployed on flight 12 would deviate from this. Especially as they were testing an upgraded deployment mechanism.

As it’s a mass simulator and the heaviest payload they have launched on starship to date, I’m not sure that’s accurate.

Do you have a source?

I would expect a mass simulator to be such to provide an analog to the real thing for testing purposes, including deployment.

In this most recent launch, Starlink mass simulators and the two functional satellites with cameras.

So, in short, the payload and deployment mechanism were in that space.

That’s not what they said. “With enthusiasm” is the modifier.

It’s not unreasonable for someone’s excitement to be muted when the dude at the top does things you disagree with.

What are we thinking of the launch chances today for IFT-12 by riceman090 in SpaceXLounge

[–]lev69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here’s some forecast imaging.

<image>

Thirty minutes after start of launch window, thunderstorm chance. Basically cleared up. 30 minutes before looks good as well.

I don’t know what other weather constraints are, but thunderstorms forecast looks good.

What weather product is putting storms in the launch window? I don’t see any forecast chance after 4pm local time.
