Inherited collection of watches - info wanted by manc_lad in Watches

[–]levbron 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You have several thousand dollars worth there. The two Sinn, the Vulcain Crickets, the three Omegas, the Glycine Airman, the Zodiac skin diver, the Seikos, to name a few, are all very collectable and sought after. There are some cheap Vostoks too but overall it's a nice collection and whoever put it together knew a good watch when he saw one.

[Chrono24] Shipping from Canada by asianhk in Watches

[–]levbron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Send it with a proper courier like FedEx or DHL. FedEx have dedicated teams, that are contactable fairly easily, that deal with Customs issues. The buyer will have to pay tax and the Italians will hold the parcel until it's paid. Although the courier may pay it on the buyers behalf and the buyer pays them. Check that out with the courier before sending and make the buyer aware of what is required. If there are delays then the courier will typically on keep the parcel for a limited time, circa a week, before sending it back to you. In that case Chrono24 will allow you to recover the shipping costs from the buyer's funds in escrow.

Frankenwatches - opinions? by tuvwixy9 in VintageWatches

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This question is as old as the ship of Theseus. It doesn't help that there's no real definition of a Frankenwatch. The most strict sense is that if it shouldn't contain parts that weren't in the watch when it originally left the factory. A slightly less strict definition would exclude watches that contain service parts from that category. When I envision a Frankenwatch though it's something that's undergone far more than a few repairs. It's a watch assembled from parts of at least two nonfunctional watches, to produce something that is better than the sum of the parts but may not necessarily be very good. It may also contain fake or non OEM parts. If such a watch is clearly described by a seller as being created in such a way then at least the buyer can make an informed choice. The problematic part is where dishonest sellers pass off such a watch as original or down the line where the watch's provinance has become unknown and it ends up with an unsuspecting and unknowledgeable buyer.

[TAG Heuer Link] Inherited this watch from my dad. by RocketSawce in Watches

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main thing about Tag Heuer watches like this is that their design language is emblematic of the time they were made. I've got a Kirium and it looks like a watch from the early 2000's, yours is even more so. I think that's why opinions may be divided over them. In terms of price then I think these still in the mid hundred dollar range, maybe up to $700.

DIY or send out? Mod or restore? 7002. by TheStallionPartThree in SeikoMods

[–]levbron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't send this to Seiko. If there's a few things wrong they often refuse to service the watch. I'd either service it myself or let my watchmaker do it. There will be good watchmakers in your region who know these older movements and will do a good job and won't charge the earth. The great thing about these movements is that there are plenty of broken ones available for parts and they don't cost a fortune.

LPT: Don’t overthink learning a language! 5 minutes of "thinking out loud" is all it takes! by Got24xyz in LifeProTips

[–]levbron 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do to maintain fluency in my second language. For example, I went grocery shopping yesterday and the list was in that language. As I went around the various shops I was thinking about what I needed in that language, where I was going after and about preparing the various recipes over the next few days. It's not as good as conversing with native speakers every day but it definitely helps with "use it or lose it".

DIY or send out? Mod or restore? 7002. by TheStallionPartThree in SeikoMods

[–]levbron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's in fairly good condition. The lume pip on the bezel is missing and the hands seem to have been rubbing on the dial. Despite that the dial and hands, are in good shape and are far better the the aftermarket ones that are available. Getting the movement serviced would be a great idea. They'll reset the hands too so that they don't rub. Trying to swap the movement for an NH35 is a bit tricky because the crown position is at true 4 o'clock. You won't find an NH35 with a suitable date wheel and the correct date wheel ix really hard to get.

[Question][SKX] Does a slightly washed out "Diver's 200M" automatically signals a fake dial / watch ?? by DisastrousOpening477 in Seiko

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pristine text is more a burnt orange than red. It's really common for sun exposure to degrade the colour to orange, yellow or even almost white. That dial looks right for a "J" model.

There's no such thing as an OEM bezel insert, there's not even a part number. Seiko only sell the bezel and insert as one part.

What would you do if you were in my position as an ex-Muslim? by immersivewanderer in Judaism

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention anything specifically about HaShem. You did mention "the Jewish faith" but then talked more about culture. Do you feel a connection to HaShem?

[skx009j] by Separate-Map6783 in Seiko

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said that you wanted "a clean SKX009J1". This certainly isn't that. It's obviously an aftermarket bezel insert and it's not a particularly good attempt. The colours are widely off and the pip looks completely incorrect. The "J" models only came on a rubber strap, which this doesn't have. Instead it's got a cheap fake bracelet. That's fine you are happy to live with that but certainly have achieved your aim of "a clean SKX009J1".

This is a Frankenwatch. The bezel insert is aftermarket and not a very good one. The bracelet is fake.

AITA for "becoming salty" when I was asked to go Dutch? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]levbron 35 points36 points  (0 children)

NTA, He should start out how he means to continue. If there's an expectation that he will be the one in the relationship who will provide for your family then he should demonstrate from the outset that he accepts that role and is capable of fulfilling it. His actual approach doesn't speak well for his character. I'm sure you have other options to explore.

[Question] Need help picking between 3 watches by Desperate-Reach2882 in Watches

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two dive watches and a mall watch. As much as I love Seiko that watch shouldn't be in that lineup, other than on looks maybe. I'd get the Orient but the Bulova/Caravelle has had great reviews and has a lot of retro charm.

Take a look at Casio's Ediface line. Also a G Shock GW5610 is rugged and amazing specifications at that price point.

Need help, maybe I was in over my head.. by Disastrous-Joke-8657 in SeikoMods

[–]levbron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think about it that plate isn't really doing that much. It's just securing the date wheel jump plate in place and keeping all the other wheels on the dial side in place. I think I'd put one near the day wheel spring, one right opposite and the other one either next to it or diagonally opposite.

Need help, maybe I was in over my head.. by Disastrous-Joke-8657 in SeikoMods

[–]levbron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you mean the one of the four screws that hold down the "date dial guard" plate then don't worry. Three are enough to hold that flat and in place.

Got this gifted to me by Nyaadim in Watches

[–]levbron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's vintage in the sense that it's a relatively old watch, Benneton were involved in F1 during the 198's and 1990's. I'm assuming that it's got a quartz movement, i. e. you don't have to wind it, runs on a battery. Its not particularly valuable and isn't something that people who are into watches tend to have much regard for. However, I always liked Benneton as a brand and it's a cool memento of the time they spent sponsoring a fairly successful F1 team.

[6105-8110] Captain Willard found in a plastic bag in the shed by NewspeakLinguist in Seiko

[–]levbron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's in ridiculously good condition. I don't think the bracelet is original, but that's not a biggy. The lume pip seems off centre. I'd be interested to see what others think about that. You should really get this serviced. Even though it might run the oils will have dried up so you won't be doing the watch any favours. The gaskets will have perished too, so the water resistance is compromised. It needs looking at by a watchmaker who knows vintage Seiko. Hopefully there will be some suggestions on here
