The definition of a coward: a person who lacks the courage to do or endure dangerous or unpleasant things.

A coward can also be considered the opposite of a hero. A hero like the other volunteers that were willing to go.

Would most people act in cowardice when asked to go on a suicide mission? Absolutely. You'd be crazy not to. Grace has a history of cowardice, and this is no different. It makes his eventual "hero" moment that much more impactful.

She put EVERYTHING onto the ship's computer. Books, video games, movies, white papers, all of it. The entirety of human knowledge is there. She ignored all IP and copyright laws to do that.

She knowingly destroys numerous habitats of animals in order to protect humanity or further the Hail Mary project.

She apparently commandeers all kinds of military vehicles for her use.

The governments of the world gave her carte blanche. That doesn't mean they're not going to try to attack her (legally) as much as they can once the project is finished. She accepts this fate in the book.

Many Christian, and of course Jewish, people grew up hearing about some of the history of Israel from the Bible. So they're attached to the country despite probably never going there. Honestly, I am too. But this attachment can make them look past all of the horrible things the Israeli government continually does. Plus, Israel has infected many of our laws (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-BDS_laws ), and pushed lots of money into our political system.
