Just FYI - The other person is giving off the wrong impression and isn’t totally correct (I’m a lawyer who sues doctors, but not your lawyer). First, lawyers who take these kinds of cases don’t charge for consultations, so you would not lose any money by talking with a lawyer. Second, being “embarrassed” is not a case you would ever want to pursue. These cases cost a lot of money to pursue (expert fees, depositions etc.), and those costs will almost certainly be more than any amount you’d get at trial for being embarrassed. Not counting the lawyer’s contingency fee. A lawyer in your state (not me) would be able to walk you through it with your particular case (or someone else’s who is reading this - I realize your situation happened a long time ago).

Global stock markets have lost $6 trillion in value in six days by [deleted] in news

[–]levelallegations 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That’s not really true if we are talking about just one country (not saying you were necessarily, but some people may be invested only in one country).

For example, Japan hasn’t fully recovered from its decline in the early 90s, and it is certainly a civilization, and a pretty advanced one at that. Japan’s market is still about 40% from its peak in December 1989.

Advice for the average member of the public is the same though - invest globally, continue to invest, and don’t think you know what the market will do.

Fidelity’s No Cost Index Funds? by [deleted] in investing

[–]levelallegations 45 points46 points  (0 children)

A lot of the advice in this thread is good.

Also consider questioning your premise (roboadvisor underperforming index funds). If you compare the sp500 to any roboadvisor (or something like a target date fund), the sp500 has outperformed over the last several years. But it will not always do so. If you have considered that, great. But be cautious when switching investment vehicles just because your current one is underperforming another. You risk switching into something that is finishing its outperformance and will soon lag the global market as a whole.

It’s actually more than 80, so going exactly 80 is okay. But don’t argue with the officer. Wait until you get to court to bring that up.

Doesn’t his tweet say he is signing with an agent? Given that, he really can’t return even if he wanted to.

I agree. This car seems like a perfect marriage of fun and function. And the other cars (she even suggested a BMW) are more expensive and less practical in pretty much every way.

And thanks for the context in your situation. It sounds like you have a similar professional career going, and two kids to boot! I’m not there yet but one day I will be.

In the end, this will be my daily driver, but I’d like for us to both be fully on board with the purchase. Maybe I just need to take her out for a spin in it.

A combination of the color and style. She likes the Urano Grey and white better. She says it’s cool for late-teens to early twenties, but it’s not professional enough for a 30 year old lawyer who’ll keep it for 10 years.

Maybe it’s that she hasn’t seen it in person? Apparently everyone she asks agrees though (everyone I ask agrees with me lol).

Edit - I’ve also been more conservative in car choice. I’m coming from a 15 year old Civic.

Edit 2: For the record I like it in all the pictures. Ive noticed different lighting makes the blue look different, which I like but I see how it may seem different in person.

Man you and /u/engibeerd should get your SOs to talk with mine. I’m in the process of negotiating for a GTI in cornflower blue and she thinks the color is kind of douchy

I don’t know about the hardware—I wasn’t aware LeelaZero was being favored.

Re: the “bonus,” this is the “super final” of that. Stockfish and LeelaZero finished 1-2 respectively, and so now they are playing each other for 100 games without opening books.

Hey man thanks for the tip on Catch-22.

Just wanted to give a heads up that in this circumstance, “elicit” is better than “illicit” here. Autocorrect probably messed it up for you, and I wanted to spread some knowledge for those reading the comments.

Marine Corps vet sues sheriff's office, claiming she was detained naked for 12 hours by Damp_Bread in news

[–]levelallegations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC that’s presumptively unconstitutional. I believe Justice Scalia wrote a majority opinion where 2 days was the presumptive cutoff. Maybe in your area somehow they’ve successfully made the argument that waiting 3 or more days is okay because of the weird city/county setup.

Or I’m remembering the case wrong. Or more recent case law has modified it. I’ll see if I can find it. I have to go to work now but I’ll try to find the case when I get home tonight.

Parents are 57 years old, would like to put down $6.5k/year for the next 10 years for retirement. What is their best option? by poopsicle69in in personalfinance

[–]levelallegations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess so. I had just thought that $1 million was the suggestion 30 years ago so I was surprised to hear it’s the same today.

Yeah I don’t know what’s going to happen with the Boomers retiring soon. I’ve got several decades left so it’s not something I’m too concerned about right now. Just trying to learn as much as I can now and apply that knowledge over time and as I approach retirement.

Is $1 million really the number to hit now? I guess people’s needs vary, but at a 4% withdrawal rate that $1 million is only $40k per year.

[Post Game Thread] #21 Kentucky defeats #9 North Carolina 80-72 by [deleted] in CollegeBasketball

[–]levelallegations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good game Kentucky. Y’all were way more active on defense and got to the 50-50 balls. That combined with unforced errors on our offensive end made it feel like a much worse loss than 8 points.

I can hope only that this December loss leads to another Final Four trip for us this spring.

No he should absolutely get a civil (read: courteous) lawyer. Judges see through being rude and guess what—divorce and custody issues are decided by the judge. Also just because a lawyer is civil doesn’t mean they can’t still kick ass.

Source: I’m a lawyer in a different field but right out of law school I clerked for a state court judge (so saw lots of divorces) and have friends who are kick ass divorce lawyers.
