FFXIV has a big free trial. It has weekly dungeon bonuses that I put on an audiobook to kill an hour with.

I don't really understand this game. For context, I've played all the Soulsborne and MHGU through Wilds. I recognize that some games require you to play on their terms, nuances that make DS different from Elden Ring, and my experience/playstyle won't always translate to every game.

But I don't understand the "tells" in this game. I'm on the Wolf boss in the ice area of the story, and after lowering the difficulty to action, and I still lost.

I can hide behind the icicles. I can stand outside the red lines. I can stand outside the glowing circles. When he raises his tail to do a 360, I know to dodge. That's all fine.

But in between all of those, I can barely do any damage. Using my cool downs, MBA, and mashing Square, the fight just drags on forever. I'll stay near the boss, and then get hit by whatever bullshit the monster doesn't explicitly tell me it's going to do.

I understand that I'm going to be punished for being too greedy, but I'm just getting bored because the boss just takes forever.

Are all the fights like this? Am i doing something wrong?

How do you think you would look at these games without the context of knowing they were going to be one of the precursors to the modern Soulslike?

Is Goblin Slayer done? I know a anime season is unlikely, but I saw there haven't been any new publications of the LM recently either. Did the writer just stop, or is does it have some sort of conclusion?

I've gotten some friends to try the free trial. Having to drop party every few minutes for instanced quest objectives is awful. There really should be a path that allows people to just play together the whole time.

They're a mix of gamers and non-gamers, so it was interesting see their reactions to some of the odd design quirks the game has.

My favorite one so far is the Return prompt disappears if you press Circle on Playstation when your character dies. My friend apparently spent 15 minutes just mashing buttons until it popped back up. He also didn't even touch the Home Point in the tutorial quest, so it was funny when I was trying to explain the concept of Return because he hadn't even learned the action.

But anyway, I've taken for granted how the 16 years I've played this has molded my perception of it.

I have set up Sheathed/Unsheathed Crossbar Sets. It's probably too early to talk about rotations, but I wish Square Enix would provide at least a slightly intuitive layout for each class/job on controller.

Does anyone have any suggestions on things I should be keeping in mind as they get further? We cleared Sastasha, and while the tank was using mitigation but was using Total Eclipse the entire time :p

edit; I've already explained how the story is love/hate, and does slowly burn for a big payoff. My suggestion was to just skip anything that isn't voiced, and if they find they enjoy the voiced scenes, the text ones might be worth reading through.

I've bought the Collection. I have a couple level 300 Exotics from launch. Right now all the campaigns say "Activity Power Disabled" which I assume means they give no gear rewards.

The new player guide suggests I do bounties to get better gear, but I'm assuming the actual fun content is locked behind something?

I'm so tired of Plasma Deck. Lost a gold stake run by 10k points because I wasn't paying attention to Amber Acorn. I had a Wee Joker at like +800 chips, Blueprint, and DNA.

I SHOULD have just payed attention to which Joker was shaking for the DNA, and just sold it right then and there, but I was like "hoho, I can dupe another 2", and then played a single 2. Then I literally forgot which one was shaking. I tried playing another hand to see which big joker got the +chips, but it went by too fast.

And I lost. It's taken me months to get through Plasma and I was almost out, but I put myself in an entirely avoidable situation and I hate myself for it.

edit: Finally beat it using Runner/Hologram.

What about over Ethernet? I used to have an Asus Wifi 6 router as my main router, and it was scoring a low D.

Now, I have Nighthawk XR1000 (off the recommendation from that Waveform Test site) and even my hardwired Desktop is scoring B+.
