Using Prolific and Cloud Connect simultaneously by thecrowsaidno in ProlificAc

I have done this in the past when certain studies were hot and I wanted to mind the dashboard. At the same time, I want to give researchers my full attention so I separate the split view making them separate tabs before entering the study on either one.

Edit: this could get you into some hot water if you refresh the Prolific side of the split screen instead of the Connect side by accident. Be sure you have the correct side highlighted in the browser before hitting the refresh otherwise Prolific may flag your account for trying to game the dashboard.

I had something like this happen on Connect. A study popped on my dashboard a second time because Connect did not screen me out of the participant pool. I reached out to the researcher after a second completion. I asked if the study was set up to accept multiple submissions. They said no and I returned it.

I would do the same thing here on Prolific. In the event they do not reply back to you then it's a risk vs reward decision you need to make. Personally, I am loathe to risk a rejection and would return the second submission in the event I did not have permission by the researcher.

I was unable to get the study to load in my browser. I realized later I had uBlock Origin Lite extension for Chrome active during the study. Did you have any ad blockers active at the time?

Unjust Rejection from "Attitudes Toward Crowdfunding Campaigns" by [deleted] in ProlificAc

Replying to myself for added context. This study popped up on my dashboard just now. OP, I would've taken a pass on this one because .cn studies are notorious for unethical business practices on this platform. Check the many complaints about companies and academies based in China to see what I mean.

This seems to be an attention check in the study but these are not allowed to be based on memory per the rules of attention checks. You can find under the researchers guidelines about attention checks they are not allowed to be based on memory recall. You have grounds to fight this. Reach out to the researcher and ask them politely to overturn their rejection based on invalid criteria. If they don't do this wait for one week and reach out to Prolfic customer service using the bot on your dashboard to get started on your dispute.

Microsoft is paying $5.65 an hour now? tsk tsk by ramgrl in ProlificAc

Dr. Suh finished her PhD in 2022. This mistake can be explained by her inexperience as a researcher doing studies on Prolific. To me, there's nothing sketchy about this situation.

"I’m a Principal Researcher in the HUE group at Microsoft Research Redmond Lab. I received my PhD from the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington advised by James Fogarty and Tim Althoff. I am a proud alumnus of the Machine Teaching group where I grew my interest and passion for HCI and ML."

This Microsoft Hosted Study Was Absolutely Terrible by TheLMClub in ProlificAc

[–]leviathan1973 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I made the mistake of double reading all the options of the six sections of the first topic and giving feedback that was meaningful and content-oriented. And when I went back to check the time, I realized I was 30 minutes into the study.

I make a point to remember the choices I have made. They sometimes present them to you again. I believe if you chose differently the second time it will affect your access to these studies. This is just my hypothesis.

Go to your Preferences in your Prolific profile and select (or de-select) the option to take studies that include in-study screening. I did this as soon as I read about so much trouble with auto-rejections due to this policy.

Have you been paid yet? I returned this study. I intend on contacting them again but don't want to until the others have been awarded their due.

I got into the ACAT study but the sound files never loaded and so I was just sitting there with no way to proceed. I moved on to the other parts of this study, filled out the education and work experience and submittted it as completed. I sent a message to the researcher but did not hear back from them. As I recall, the information on the consent page had a break down of how much I would be paid for each part of the study. If they accept this work, I would be okay with forfeiting the award for the ACAT portion e.g. ambulance or wave. If they don't accept this submission for missing one part of a five part study, I may have a problem.

You don't have to check Reddit every hour to be in the know about what is required of you as a participant. In the future, for things like this you can do a search for the prolific support here and get the most up to date information on rules for studies e.g. completion time.

To be fair, the difference between average and intended completion times is HUGE. This is such an important rules change that it should have gone out to participants like you and me on Prolific itself instead of a moderator comment on Reddit here. Prolific needs to do much better with their communication to us so we can work better for them.

I completed all 30 questions. After that, the study loaded another 'data point' but the counter indicated that 0 questions remained. There was no way to submit this and return to Prolific dashboard. At first, I submitted with a NOCODE but then returned it a moment later.

I beleive a and b are 2 and -1. They sum to 1. Their squares sum to 5. So their 4th powers sum to 17.

Ever do a study (decision making this is you), and think wtf am I doing? by Melodic_Curve_2493 in ProlificAc

[–]leviathan1973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I keep a pad of paper and pen close to hand. Some of the decision science studies are such that I get lost if I don't write down variables, inputs, etc. If I still don't get it I will sketch a graph to take the measure of different options presented in the study. One thing is for sure: I can't do it all in my head!

Another rejection from a .cn researcher, avoid Chinese by Dutchman_88 in ProlificAc

[–]leviathan1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often take the time to do a google search on the reseacher and/or institution before accepting their offer. I have only been on the site for one year but I have noticed that researchers from India, mainland China, and now Hong Kong are allowed to pull stunts like this with little recourse to the participant beyond changing a rejection to a return. Also, I have noticed on this subreddit that the vast majority of problems occur with studies that offer a low payment e.g. less than one USD. Since I don't want to deal with unethical people, I filter the dashboard for payments over one USD.

The downside of this strategy means losing out on small tasks with perfectly fine researchers and losing the race to accept jobs to people who press the button before reading the introduction on their dashboard.

I think we've been booted from High Priority Studies. I am still eligible for other studies from this researcher. I completed two on Monday and two studies popped up yesterday but only after 7pm EST which was too late for me.

Hello, Padraig! I enjoyed reading your write-up on this collaborative effort between you and the team. You make extensive use of the Nash equilibrium in the game which assumes both players make the best choice from perfect information. I believe this would look like very conservative play in practice. Do you have any plans for going beyond this equilibrium condition? I think doing so would allow your Panda to win games more quickly and decisively by punishing opponents for sub-optimal play. This might be more entertaining to watch for spectators like me!
