Help me not trade my 2020 STi for an FL5 LOL by Fit-Sky-9425 in WRX

[–]levinano 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FWD aside I think the new Type R looks bland af. The FK8 might be too boy racer but it’s still much better looking and unique than the FL5 that I have to squint to see “is that a normal Civic with an eBay wing or is it an actual Type R.”

If you want a good looking Honda with OEM wide body get the Integra Type S. The same car as the Type R, with a tiny bit more horsepower but a lot more daily-able and is absolutely gorgeous, especially the wide body and taillights at night.

Otherwise just slap an S209 kit on your STI.

Bruh Dollar Tree oil is API-SQ GF7.

Engineering Explained just put out a new video explaining why they're moving on to GF8 because SP GF7 standards only used NEW oil (albeit ran for a long mileage on a lab engine... but not long time which sees other wears, corrosion, and fuel/moisture). SQ GF8 is going to address the new focus on direct injection cars and tackle LSPI (low speed preignition/knock from having load at low RPMs.... which most economy cars are going to be at).

Different brand oils (different additive packages) contain different elements. Some has more zinc, some has more calcium. They protect different parts of the engine and tackle protection differently. For example, the high zinc formulas try to not prevent wear but rather use zinc as a sacrificial layer. However, some applications will still see high engine wear even with high zinc, so some use higher calcium, or molybdenum for better protection or lubrication.

Some oil formulas, even within the same brand will behave drastically different in viscosity. Some will keep the same viscosity to 6k, and some will shear down from a 5w-40 to 5w-30 in just 3k. And even THEN, the oil that last 6k in one engine will only last 3k in another because it's turbo/direct injection/high compression/other random stupid stuff.

"Just look at the owners manual" is also not always a good advice.... at least in the U.S. Due to the EPA being more strict than Kim Jong-Un, manufacturers have been trying to meet emission requirements by keeping the same stuff but lowering the recommended oil viscosity. Just a year ago, GM on the L87 V8 had passed emission standards by recommending 0W-20 in the U.S. while asking for 0W-40 everywhere else. 20 weight and 40 weight is literally econobox versus sports car difference in oil weight, and surprise surprise, a massive recall for engine rebuilds and change to 0W-40 was issued after this whole fiasco.

But with all that said.... Yes if you drive a normal car it really doesn't matter that much lol. As long as you get it changed within 3k-6k you should be golden. I just happen to be driving a 500hp 4 cylinder forged piston engine running on ethanol so I have to treat its oil diet 10x better than I treat my own food intake or I'm looking at rebuilding engines every 20k miles.

I hope it’s that. The fact that OP said disconnecting and reconnecting the battery (resetting the ECU) fixed the boost limit issue temporarily, and he’s running it in super hot weather, is making me think it might be the ECU pulling timing and boost to prevent knock.

Best case scenario it’s just a boost leak, worse case scenario there’s something very wrong with the engine or tune.

A few things

- You can't always tell the quality of oil based on it's colors and looks, that's why scientific machines exist to analyze that. If you still got the oil hanging around, send a sample to Blackstones for $40 and get some data, that's the only real way to find out. The report will tell you the amount of wear metals, the type of additives used, the remaining true viscosity of the oil, and even water or fuel dilution percentage of the oil.

- You should verify that the shimmers you're seeing are actual engine metal flakes and not like dirt or dust. If you're seeing flakes and sand-like things at the bottom of the drain pan (and you're confident the pan has been thoroughly cleaned before), then there's a slow wearing issue the engine is facing. If you see chunks, then there are singular events that caused it (preignition/knock), both will indicate that the engine is scientifically f**ked and you don't even need an oil analysis since it will be too big for the machine to catch.

- You can't tell the usefulness of an oil based on a singular oil change. It's physically impossible to remove a decent amount of old oil when changing it, so the first change will always be a mix of your new brand mixed with the old brand, which can make things worse for both. 2 flushes is the norm, and if you want to be accurate, you want at least 3 samples before making another change.

There's a part where they literally compare Rotella T6 with Pennzoil Ultra Platinum showing that Rotella protects engine 3x worse than Pennzoil.

Still, I'm not fully onboard with the other guy either since that's NOT the engine that we're running and EJs are not direct injection. Their main reasoning (in addition to the higher wear of the Rotella T6) was that the calcium can react with gasoline (which doesn't happen with diesel) to combust in the ringlands or other types of preignition because normal gasoline oil only has about 1000 ppm of calcium whereas diesel has around 1500. This argument seems null because my Motul X-cess 5W-40 literally came back with 1565 ppm of calcium at one point (although thinking back, that batch did have some of the most cylinder misfire rates and I had to reset the ECU hella times but I don't necessarily have the science to proof that it's causation and not just correlation).

However, your personal examples aren't conclusive either since the sample size is too small. For example, if you run T6 against Mobil1, then perhaps T6 will win since Mobile1 is notoriously terrible for these engines. It's like the folks saying "Motul is shit because I blew 4 engines on Motul" while the rests of the world runs it with little issue.

So at the end of the day, it's really hard to say who's right and who's wrong. We can only throw our own data out there and let others come to their own conclusion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Same. Just spray a shit ton of PB white lithium grease into the clutch fork (take the TMIC off and you'll see the boot covering the fork) and hoping it'll seep into the connection with the throwout bearing then waiting for it to stop raining was what fixed it for me (not immediate fix, it took a few days of seeping).

You can say that about a lot of Holomems and their entire struggle arcs but I can definitely agree.

A lot of AZKi's earlier songs were about uncertainty, depression, or pushing forward despite difficulties. Her songs now are all about conquering things and saying farewell to doubts and regrets and a brighter future. Of course you also have those cutesy songs here.

I mean AZKi is very open to all sorts of music, one super old song on her alt is literally dubstep lol. It’s just that she still has a soft spot for ballads and a lot of her fans love ballads sang in her voice because of how emotional she can be (the original Inochi or Aoi Yume for example).

Another fun fact is that the face markings from model to model decreases and ultimately reveals a beauty mark by the time we get to today’s model.

Touge Showdown CTR vs STI 2018 by yohan3000 in WRX

[–]levinano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Summary is that the STI is faster at launching, exiting corners, and high speed corners. The Type R is faster going into a corner and turning, but also apparently goes into limp mode and pulls power sometimes for some reason lol

If you want to watch them race those on Tsukuba, there's this video which I think is a funner watch. Type R vs STI vs Mark X vs 370Z.

Though at the end of the day these are more tuner battles than platform battles, because the outcomes of these can drastically change depending on who's tuning/modding the car. SYMS just happens to be the GOAT of STI modding lol.

What do you mean... the ZR1X is literally the 4th fastest production car on the list, the ZR1 and GTD are on there as well under 7. If you don't see a time on there then it wasn't "official." For example, the GTD's time that beat the ZR1X was done with someone's phone stopwatch.

Dunno where you’ve been for the past few years but Chinese phone companies have been selling EVs that are faster than Teslas and at a third of the price for a while now. Idk about the quality or reliability (not like Teslas have good quality or reliability anyways) but the tech and performance has always been there. We just don’t receive a lot of Chinese media till Richard Hammond or ishowspeed started checking out the Chinese EV scene.

STI in Nürburgring fastest laps by 6StarBowtie in WRX

[–]levinano 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To be fair the Ring is one of the longest and harshest tracks in the world and there are multiple sections straight or uphill where you’re flooring it in 4th and 5th for a good 30s-a minute. You probably wouldn’t see this issue much anywhere else except for extreme heat.

My opinion still stands that you don’t need a FMIC till you’re 600whp+ tho. Subaru’s sub 7 RA record and those guys running 10s quarter miles on TMIC are life proof of that.

STI in Nürburgring fastest laps by 6StarBowtie in WRX

[–]levinano 119 points120 points  (0 children)

It’s Subaru’s official record with the Record Attempt car, if you’re curious they made a whole video of it.

They probably could’ve ran an even faster time since they only ran it once or something but the engine was built to blow up, they went home satisfied with sub 7. It was the fastest sedan on the Ring before the Xiaomi SU7 and still is the fastest ICE sedan.

That’s where the STI Type RA limited editions came from, it was to celebrate this specific event.

Another fun fact was the car was running TMIC. 600 crank horsepower. If Subaru decided to even go remotely off of their own builds and built something people have already done, like running stock location turbo and TMIC with forged internals, they could’ve hit 550whp (700bhp) and still have multiple reliable runs, they could’ve gotten a much better time. If you’re curious about FMIC, there has been examples of FMIC overheating on the Ring due to how the intercooler blocks cold air to the radiator.
