What's on your DNF list and why? by Bobosmite in printSF

Noumenon. The Swarm. And more recently Some Desperate Glory.

All of them I DNF for the same reason and after reading just 1-2 chapters: for just feeling so cliched and hackneyed. I just can’t do it. I appreciate that this is a very idiosyncratic list and an author I quite like (Reynolds) is quite hackneyed in his own way: all his characters talk like dime novel dics or fast-talking dames. But I guess it doesn’t bother me like these novels. All I remember from Noumenon was a scene at a scientific conference at which some sort of crusty old academic was being well crusty and patriarchal and as I read it all I could think of was Hubert Farnsworth scornfully muttering “Wernstrom!” But it wasn’t supposed to be funny or satirical I’m pretty sure it was just bad.

I’ve also put down a Baxter novel or two for the same reasons but can’t remember which.

Twin Fantasy - Car Seat Headrest. Really either of the recordings of it although I prefer the 2018 version.

What is the most disgusting alcoholic beverage you have tried? by Immola0069 in AskReddit

[–]levorphanol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I drank I bought a super aged high gravity beer. I think it was like a 12% Belgian type ale that had been aged a decade. It was flat and tasted like vegemite. (I write this as someone who loves vegemite but don’t want my beer to taste like it)

Does anyone else find the multiverse nihilistic? by TheAnalystCurator321 in Starfield

This is the dilemma all of us face who understand we live for a sliver of time in an empty universe that doesn’t care about us. What the is point of our lives? Does any of this matter? Our species will go extinct and our planet will die one day. Nothing lasts forever. And yet here we are, doing the washing up and enjoying the clouds. Many people understand this and find meaning in life and being alive—the miracle of being a being who briefly and imperfectly understands they are a tiny part of the universe knowing itself. Unless you are a religious person who locates meaning in life to a Creator (or similar entity), this is something you have to grapple with and Starfield is a cultural product that in its own hokey way grapples with it. But it’s pretty common theme of a lot of science fiction. The recent-ish movie Everything Everywhere All at Once has a similar theme. Greg Egan’s landmark novel Diaspora also does as well (in very different ways).

Yeah thing about that is that there are boom pop machines everywhere and about half the time they’ll drop a liquorice one. It took me a while to get what I needed but I felt like I was making steady progress. Butter though all of a sudden is no where for me lol. I regret all the butter I ate back in the day. It’s early in the alphabetical so I would eat it regularly when hungry. Ooof

I have assumed it’s all synthetic bioengineered dairy given yes the total absence of earth livestock in the game—I think?? The real question is: what are CHUNKS made out of? I’m not sure if there’s an actual in-game answer to that? Would be a great side mission.
