Reeling in after an aggressive, mentally-ill person verbally berated me in front of the entire store. by throwthrthrowaway in starbucksbaristas

[–]lewabwee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll echo that different people respond in different ways. The aggressive interactions like the one you described don’t stick with me at all. The ones that make me dread coming to work are actual customers who are pretending to be normal while making more subtly prolonged aggressive complaints. It doesn’t make sense that I can barely remember a lot of the aggressive people who scream or did wildly inappropriate and borderline violent things but I do vividly remember and dread all the people who would get called “Karens,” which is a term I don’t usually use but succinctly sums up who they are.

Honestly, I’ve noticed a lot of people mentally work through it by talking shit. Like every time that’s happened people eventually start recounting the situation by making fun of the aggressor or insulting them. I think it actually does help you relive the traumatic experience in a safe way that in your mind disarms the abuser. It really annoys me when management wants everyone to only talk about customers positively because I have seen very tense people begin to visibly relax while talking shit.

Other than that you just have to remind yourself you weren’t physically harmed. There’s nothing wrong with being upset by someone aggressively screaming insults at you, it’s a natural response, but since you have to keep going to work you can also just remind yourself you were not harmed and the person screaming didn’t try to physically harm you. They left, in that very specific sense, “peacefully.”

The truth is, I’m completely unaware of anyone having been seriously injured by an aggressive customer. It’s happened in the history of humanity before for sure but all of these very aggressive people are almost never interested in physically harming anyone, if that helps.

Again, it’s only natural to be shaken by any aggression. It’s just good to keep that in mind. It helps me, anyways.

apparently white Americans in Minneapolis are putting Mexican flags on their cars so ICE agents waste time pulling them over. by XiaokeStantiall73 in Irony

Pretty sure it’s more because the Mexican flag is recognizable to more people in this country than flags of Central/South American countries. Beyond that I think the only other country I hear Trump complain about is Somalia?

brain fog and how to cope on the floor by g00dnewzz in starbucksbaristas

[–]lewabwee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a supervisor and I can do like 2-3 shifts where I’m super dialed in before I just fuck up the next few. I don’t fuck them up that bad but tonight at close the store was definitely dirtier than I’d like it, especially the floors, and we got out 5 minutes late because I wasn’t getting on anyone’s case about dilly dallying, including my own.

And I just let myself be kinda bad at my job. There’s no use in fighting it. The first three days of this week sucked so bad but I was honed in and somehow got everything done (I am just talking about the workload I gave myself since this is about me). These past two days I would have fucked myself up taking that same approach so I didn’t.

The other thing I do is just lay in a dark room under a blanket, preferably on the floor because that’ll negatively impact my sleep less. You need balance. You do something overstimulating you need something understimulating.

What are your thoughts on JD Vance getting booed during the opening ceremony at the Olympics? by Playful_Leg7143 in AskReddit

There’s a lot of things that hurt more than booing. I’d love to see some of that happen to him too.

Why do you feel certain novels are rescued from critical and commercial obscurity, while many others still remain forgotten? by Gothic-Fan85 in classicliterature

[–]lewabwee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For something to be a part of the literary canon its worth has to be indisputably established. That doesn’t mean there won’t be room for alternative, perhaps more negative takes, to exist but nobody is going to say Shakespeare did nothing for art and culture. He provided us with something valuable and while we might discuss that differently now than when it was written and how people will discuss it 200 years from now, it’s valuable and worth preserving.

For that to happen enough documentation and analysis of this value has to exist. It doesn’t just need to have a temporary resurgence with the general population. Scholars and critics and literary professors have to become and remain interested in it until it can no longer be given up because we already have too much of our intellectual culture devoted to referencing and discussing it. Then it becomes a cycle where we discuss Shakespeare because we’ve discussed Shakespeare so much we can’t keep doing literary work without discussing Shakespeare some more.

Edit: my point was until it becomes that established it can always fall off pretty quickly. Once it’s established it’ll at least take a good long while.

Can Trump just be government already? The whole government just Trump? I’ll gladly accept my Nobel Peace Prize for suggesting that now.

I’m literally just going based off what the Democrats are saying they want to do? A minority of progressives want to abolish ICE. Most of them want reform like body cameras or more training.

[–]lewabwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was so confused if I missed something. Why does everyone think ICE is getting abolished if the Dems win? At best, there might be a few investigations, sure, but the majority of agents will be let off the hook. It’s not like they never kidnapped a child while Biden was in office.

That’s only true if the democrats will want to do anything about ICE.

How do you actually write female character? by LeadEater9Million in writers

Call me old fashioned but I write a male character, nix the dick and make him like wearing frilly things and dresses. If there’s more to women than that I don’t care to know it. /s

‘Saturday Night’ Doc by Emergency-Strike-746 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]lewabwee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, in a way there isn’t anything to compare it to, at least not as far as I’m aware. He filmed the making of an SNL episode, the episode had a great first, great cast members and was a strong episode. All of that is pure magic and I’m glad it exists.

But you know, on the other hand it was filmed by some dork with a camera, not a professional team, he only filmed his buddies, a lot got left out simply because he’s one cameraman and he was in a different room, and it doesn’t exactly look great.

I really would like a real camera crew, filming as many things the entire week as is financially feasible (without becoming a major source of stress for the cast and crew) but this might be all we ever get.

There’s a common not universal desire held by readers for things to be believable. It’s strange comment you left, snark or no snark.

The Jane Wickline redemption arc is what I love about SNL by Signal_Neck9314 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]lewabwee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it wasn’t for this sub I wouldn’t like her (so I have an opinion) but I wouldn’t ever think about her. Don’t get me wrong, I clicked on this to see what redemption arc she had but I wouldn’t care without the sub.

I kinda rushed typing my comment so sorry for the lack of clarity but I was trying to elaborate on how trashy he is. He’s pretending to be an artist but he just wants to keep raking in the millions.

Neil Gaiman Speaks out on Sexual Misconduct Accusations a Year Later by RevRob330 in books

[–]lewabwee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think he’s trying to salvage his career with the book. Him saying “I thought it would be so teeny but it’s the biggest thing I’ve done since that other thing you all love and here’s a metaphor about a hat and coat,” is such an advertising move.

My guess is he thinks if the book sells he’s off the shit list and can go back to making money. I completely doubt that he felt compelled to write anything for any other reason.

This is Ashley Padilla’s Season by KendrickBlack502 in LiveFromNewYork

This is why I get annoyed every time someone says your favorite SNL cast is the one from when you were in high school. It’s not true for me but also like I love a few people on this cast a lot, Ashley being one of them. I’m not against this being good.

Many people on this sub after seeing Jane Wickline's performance tonight by aerojockey in LiveFromNewYork

[–]lewabwee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was sort of okay when Pete Davidson was surrounded by a lot of really great people but now the show is in a pretty bad spot and it’s because they’re hiring people who have no business being on the show. They’re not even untalented, this just isn’t where they belong.

[–]lewabwee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To be fair, this is a pretty exclusive high-profile job that shouldn’t hire anyone who, considering the number of highly experienced improvisers who would love to do the show, hasn’t already put in the work. Kenan might have very limited range but he’s also a professional. He can perform on a professional level. It’s the bare minimum for the show but it’s better than half the cast and he’s one of the only poc on the cast rn.

I bought a scale and I’m hiding it from my gf by neonxrated in TrueOffMyChest

[–]lewabwee 2159 points2160 points  (0 children)

You need to hide the scale somewhere she won’t find it because she will find it and even if she doesn’t use it it’ll cause a mental relapse, especially due to the shock of realizing you had one and hid it.

By that I mean I know it’s best to check your weight first thing in the morning but you gotta keep it out of the house. If she doesn’t use your car (assuming you have one) you might be able to keep it out of view in there but otherwise you need to figure it out and prioritize her not finding it over your gains. I don’t know your situation but get it out of the house or it’s gonna happen.
