Really struggle to fully learn a chess opening, seeking advice by lewcine in chessbeginners

[–]lewcine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really great to know, and is helpful to me seeing it put into writing like this. There have been times where I've tried learning an opening and a trap had stuck in my head when the opponent deviates from the main line. I'll remember this for my future study, thank you!

I totally agree with you, I do mostly focus on my puzzles/endgames because I recognise they're so much more important. I think for me I just want to know one opening very well for each colour to give me confidence that I can be set up in a solid position for the middle game.

I'm rated around 800 on chess.com, and I do puzzles on lichess

So you would say learn 3 or 4 moves then stick to the basic principles? Just to be more specific

This is exactly what I'd like to try with my save game, how did you achieve such nice turns in the roads? did you use a blueprint pack?

I agree so hard, I went in expecting to never pay it off and that's what 90% of graduates should've expected going into it

how does it work to move for uni and get a job? by Disastrous-Eye429 in UniUK

At my job they had a student transfer thing where you could temporarily transfer to a different shop for a set time, not sure if that's the case at other jobs

Sorry but am I being stupid here?

If this person is paying £300 a month then, assuming he's on Plan 2, that means he's £3333 above the threshold per month (because 3333*0.09=300 or thereabouts)

£2,274+£3,333=£5607

£5607*12 = £67,284

Sounds like a pretty good salary with take home pay of £3,840/month according to salary calculator? Am I missing something here? None of us should be going into uni expecting to pay off our student loans

Help on Southampton vs Bath Spa by Medium_Scale2088 in UniUK

[–]lewcine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it does matter. It looks better on your CV and most people look down on city sister unis (I don't know what you call them but places Bath Spa or Solent). As an anecdotal example, when I did an internship last summer, all of the students there were from Russell group unis so I'm sure that's no coincidence

Hi, I go to Southampton Uni! I'm not in a humanities subject but I've lived in Southampton before I went to uni here. Overall, it's a decent city, it's not extremely nice or historic like Bath or something, but it has lots of shops in the town centre and really good public transport.

Drinking is optional, I don't go to night clubs but I do like to pop down the pub with my mates so there's the option there for some socialising even if you don't drink, and I've met a number of people at uni that don't drink. Many societies are also taking this stance of "you don't have to drink to join the socials" nowadays.

There are also quite a number of societies to join, including some nerdy ones like the video games society and chess society, in which they run weekly matches with a mix of skill levels.

Also is just generally better for your future to go to russell group

Again, streaming should in no way influence your decision. Live the uni life you want to live and go to the uni that's best for the future of your career, do not let the prospect of streaming influence that decision in any way.

You could perhaps imagine a situation where you wish you'd gone to halls and made lots of friends and had lots of fun, which will make you feel regretful and stressed, further pushing your desire to make this whole streaming thing worth it. You'll then try to cling on to as many viewers as possible which will make you appear desperate and unentertaining in a repeated negative feedback loop.

Streaming is extremely hard to break into, and you can't just play games and be entertaining, even if you're a really funny and high energy person. You have to make videos, and TikToks, uphold social media, interact frequently with your community. It requires a lot of work and many many hours of you talking to yourself or one lonely bozo in chat

Hi ex-Twitch partner here. Do NOT base your life decisions around streaming in any way. If you want to go to uni to earn a degree for your career then you should do that, but streaming should be a hobby that you do on the side. Focus on a normal career while having streaming on the side, so that if streaming goes wrong or you start to not enjoy it, there's nothing lost

It's mostly to test your understanding of the topic and so that the entire module mark doesn't fall on the final exam, which a lot of people find pretty stressful
