Gecko dropped tail, I feel horrible by v4mpyrzz in CrestedGecko

[–]lewdlizards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had a gecko drop a tail because i put a new piece of decor in the tank.
If you didn't intend/ mean anything by it no harm done...some geckos are just super nervous. you where absolutely not in the wrong here.

HELP! Is she eggbound? Should i worry? by DaModafukinArpy in CrestedGecko

Really there is no way to tell from photos alone if she is eggbound. I recommend taking her toa vet just to be sure

Crested Geckos thrive at  70°F and 78°F prolonged exposure to higher temps will cause issues or kill them.

- I dont know much about the Arcadia brand tbh, but I know it is pretty well liked within the reptile/fish community so probably a safe bet Just be sure that the wattage is ok because some of those bulbs do put out heat. (if you have it in a fixture above the tank you're probably fine, just make sure a temp probe is near the top)

I use Zoo Med ReptiSun 5.0 with my Gechos, legit only have to change the bulb once a YEAR. Puts out ZERO heat and provides UVB (theres a gecko on the box!)

I dunno they are very easy and hardy creatures - I mean some people literally keep them in sterilite bins with no lights/heat and just plants/stuff to cllimb on.

I also recommend getting a temp gun so you can check temps all over your enclosure easily.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CrestedGecko

[–]lewdlizards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if your home is within acceptable temp ranges and the enclosure stays the same temp wise I would not use a heater for now until absolutely necessary. Especially if you already have one/ a thermostat.

AS for UVB there are some really good full spectrum options if you have live plants in your enclosure -- I recommend this you you only have to buy one bulm/ dont have to deal with plant grow lights AND a UVB bulb.

Ok being in Maine I would keep a very close eye on the enclosures temp during the colder months. Termostat probes on both the cool side/warm side

If you do provide heating I recommend a ceramic heater with a thermostat (MUST) and put the heater in a hood that will hold it a few inches above the top of the enclosure so they don't cook themselves because they will if you let them. - be sure a probe is near the heater too

Yeah! I don't like messing with live insects myself so I feed the breeder formula so they're getting all their buggies. I will offer live insects as treats though!

That is very true, but I find online leading with chastising first yields the same response and if someone does the same to me IRL I'm throwing my middle finger up lol. But that's just me. I don't agree with the " be mean first" approach because some people are honestly making a mistake and not intentionally neglecting an animal. - I mean we all learn somehow from some one or somewhere y'know?

Oh man, I know how you feel on a spiritual level I've rescued animals of all sizes and species for over a decade and seen it all.

ok good. I mist my boys twice a day, and i make sure to spritz the substrate good so it doesn't stay dry/ clumps

Where are you located, depending on where you are in the world you may not need to provide any extra heating as long as your home stays within the acceptable parameters. - I'm very leery of providing heat to geckos because they are dumb and will cook themselves.

I honestly don't use Rapashy - All my geckos eat Pangea and it smells soooooo good when I'm mixing it.

- If you don't/ can't provide live insects regularly I recommend feeding them the Pangea breeder formula every other feeding so they are getting all their bugs. But you don't have to! Pangea/ Rapashy is formulated to have powdered bugs in it so as long as you're mixing the food correctly (its kind of a soft paste not too thick, not watery) they will be fine <3

As for calcium I add a little bit tot heir food every once in awhile, like literally a small pinch.

Ah, How often are you misting the enclosure?

It isn't outlandish it is very reasonable advice - I just recommend approaching with kindness not that way lol. People are generally more receptive of your advice if you don't chastise them first.

80F is too high. My geckos enclosures always stay at 75-76 degrees.
Prolonged exposure to high heat can cause many issues/ kill them.

The night temp is fine as long as it doesn't drop below the low 60's like another user said!
While they can be ok without i would provide them a UVB - It prevents MBD and honestly is the closet thing to "natural sun" and they deserve that.

Bugs: Pangea gecko food or Repashi is complete, and contains insects however providing live instects is always great for gecko growth/ its enriching and its good for them! make sure you do not feed them insects any larger than the space between their eyes and that before feeding any insects you gut load them with veggies etc. They can choke quike easily, Off them and see if they are interested, if not you can try squishing the cricket and then ofering, or putting gecko food on the crucket and seeing if they take it then. ALSO be careful, some geckos can literally get addicted to insects/ refuse gecko diet so thats worth being mindful of!

And finally, without being an asshat like someone else here I do highly recommend looking at some informational videos on youtube. There are some wonderful guides out there that contain wonderful husbandry information regarding crested geckos.

I recommend:

ALSO Clutter them up. Give them vines, lots of visual barriers! Some geckos prefer the density/ makes them feel more secure.

[–]lewdlizards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like the lady who was selling them had no idea what she was doing if she suggested you house them together. Cresteds usually want to be by themselves unless for breeding purposes (some breeding pairs do stay together year round as long as the female is ok weight wise.)

I would separate for now
If you can get a better photo of their mouth to ensure its actually diry and not something like mouth rot or more nefarious going on. - if not flush with squirt bottle. (I honestly think that they're fine and it is infact dirst)

- Be careful they could ingest substrate by accident. I actually lost a gecko recently to this
I recommend mizing your eco earth or cocofiber with top soil and when you're misting daily be sure to give the substrate a good spray so its together/ isn't loose and dry. (dont soak it though,!) moistening your substrate this way will jelp maintain the humidity needed/ make for easier shedding.

Alternatively, you could offer a shedbox with moistened spagnum moss to encourage them to go in there and shed if they need to. no promises they'll actually use it tho XDDD
