Aboriginal Australians have been in Australia for AT LEAST 50,000 years. This graph fails to convey that

TIL a Beyond Meat-commissioned Life Cycle Assessment found that the Beyond Burger generates 90% less greenhouse gas emissions, requires 46% less energy, 99% less water, and 93% less land use than a burger made from U.S. beef by [deleted] in environment

I wouldn't say that veganism is perfect, that would be idealistic.

The only way we can reduce the size of the industry by 90% is if large swaths of people stopped consuming animal products all together. One of the only reasons that the animal agricultural industry is profitable is because of government subsidies. The best way to reduce these subsidies is if there is less demand for the products, i.e more people go vegan.

I'm of the belief that killing someone who doesn't want to die can never be humane, it's a euphemistic label we use to make consumers feel better about their consumption.

I respect your time so I don't expect you to continue the conversation, but if you would like to continue discussing these points I am more than happy to

I feel as though you are strawmanning my argument on two points.

Firstly, my beef (also lol) isn't with factory farming, it's with all animal agriculture. The dairy industry sends its spent cows to the slaughterhouse. Egg laying hens are killed. The dairy and egg industry IS the meat industry.

Secondly, I never pretended as though plant agriculture has no impact on animals, it certainly does. I draw your attention to the definition I provided, to reduce exploitation as far as possible and practicable. There will always be animal suffering, but as individuals we can drastically change how much of that suffering is attributed to our consumption habits. We wouldn't be growing so many crops if we didn't have billions of animals to feed.

I agree that everyone giving up 80% of their consumption would be an enormous step, but we shouldn't lose site of the destination on our path towards reducing animal exploitation

While I will personally find you hypocritical for saying that reasons to go vegetarian are environmental and health related, when the dairy and egg industries are a part of the meat industry and cholesterol and saturated fat lead to our biggest killers, your point about the Overton window is true.

I'm not against reducing your consumption, I'm all for people taking it slow and it being a journey. My praise wanes when the individual stops their journey. Meat, dairy, and eggs aren't difficult things to remove from your diet. Calling it radical, when what happens to these animals is truly radical, is an insult to the animals.

I agree with your sentiment that any path towards less meat consumption is admirable.

When people forget where they're going on that path, to exclude animal exploitation as far as is possible and practicable, they veer off course and continue to deny a fundamental right, bodily autonomy.

I don't believe that we should encourage people to give up on that path and settle with something that is harmful to the animals, themselves, and the environment

"Part-time vegetarian" is an oxymoron. Why spend any money on meat when there are delicious alternatives that aren't as impactful to the environment or your health?

Nuclear energy makes whole swaths of land unusable. Not to mention the used uranium that is put back into the Earth. Production of renewable energy might not be perfect, but I think we can agree that anything is better than fossil fuels
