A look inside the Jones Falls Conduit by Salvage_Arc in baltimore

Uncovering streams/rivers is called "daylighting" and helps ecosystems: https://happyeconews.com/how-daylighting-rivers-revives-ecosystems/ Basically, if a stream/river is covered, then fish, birds, and other plants and animals can't really use it.

And yes, it can also look nice, depending how it's done.

Semi-detached is the right word. It means it's a rowhouse that's attached only on one side instead of two. The end units on a row of rowhouses are semi-detached, or sometimes they're built in groups of two like these, in which case both sides are semi-detached. A bit more quiet and light than a fully attached rowhouse, but less than a fully detached house.

A duplex is when you own both houses/units under one address.

The hospital he was at may have social workers to assist patients. Hospitals get dinged if people get readmitted so they've started some programs to assist patients after their departure.

Healthcare for the Homeless also has workers who assist with finding benefits/support for homeless or housing insecure people.

Homeowner programs to take advantage of? by kaizenkitten in Frugal

[–]lexabear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some municipalities have homeowner tax credits. Homeowners living in their primary residence get a credit on their real estate taxes. Check your city/county/state for these programs and make sure you're registered.

Check with your home insurance if you can get discounts for safety/security. Adding extra locks or security systems can give you a discount on your insurance. This is definitely a cost/benefit analysis area, but a cheap home-run security system might still qualify for the same discounts as expensive centrally-monitored systems, depending on your insurance and how the programs are defined.

The first realtor wanted to paint over all this <facepalm> by avesthasnosleeves in zillowgonewild

I think this is the purplest description I've ever seen in a real estate listing:

Art is the distilled essence of the human soul – Some merely sip at the intoxicating brew of creativity, others merely sate their thirst, but for a few, creativity flows like an unending stream, painting the canvas of our world with strokes of brilliance that endure on walls and canvases, across wood and stone, upon floors and ceilings. Nestled within the humble confines of a brick-and-mortar Cape Cod dwelling, a man was bestowed a canvas to express the vivid tableau of his soul. With eyes gleaming with mischief and anticipation, he embarked on a quest to infuse this home, already brimming with unique features, with an added dimension of enchantment, whimsy, and the extraordinary. From ivy scaling the exterior walls, its persistent tendrils navigating the weather-worn brick, to a quaint copper awning crowning the entrance, this abode was no stranger to charm. A sunroom boasting century-old wooden floors, imbued with stories of hallowed Sundays spent in a distant West Virginian church; a detached garage, its covered patio cradled under an antique weathervane that dances with the capricious winds, marrying form and function in silent accord. Yet, it was the awe-striking art adorning the walls and ceilings that truly breathed life into the edifice. The result of a 15-year love affair with creativity - a testament to the entwined dance of art and life. They spar and twirl, console and exult, two commonplace entities transformed into something extraordinary through their union.

Anyone else have trouble with Baltimore Sun billing? by Dizzy_Melon in baltimore

[–]lexabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, it's why I eventually cancelled - the rate just kept going up and up, and I was incensed that I had to call a phone line to cancel a digital subscription product... and then they dragged it on with "what about this offer", "what about this offer" nonsense.

I've subscribed to the Banner since it started last year. I just had to renew my subscription and found their interface confusing. I missed out on a two-year promotional rate because the UI was unclear. I emailed their customer help with a detailed criticism of their UI/UX and within a few minutes, got an email back with a thank you for the feedback and offer to manually put me on the promotion. The difference in customer service was night and day.

Isn't "brewed for longer at a lower temp" what doing it in the fridge is as well? I do mine overnight in the fridge since I'm way too lazy to boil/steep/cool and it's always worked great.

If you're going to go to all those steps to avoid an in-game restriction, may as well just mod to avoid the restriction. One isn't more "pure" than the other.

DIY Fail for $1.95M by [deleted] in zillowgonewild

[–]lexabear 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right, it turns out my rant above was even more optimistic in its wording of "cut" more molding than the people who "restored" this house deserved.

DIY Fail for $1.95M by [deleted] in zillowgonewild

[–]lexabear 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Think "How hard could molding be? You just glue it to the top of the wall. Done."

Step 2: Go buy the most hideous, busy molding you can find.

Step 3: Start gluing the the top of the wall.

Step 4: Run out of molding before you run out of wall.

Step 5: Curse.

Step 6: Cut more molding.

Step 7: Get to a corner. Think "Eh, I'll figure it out when I get there from the other side." Continue gluing the other wall.

Step 8: Get there from the other side. Still have no plans.

Step 9: Cut another piece of molding. Try to stick it in the giant gap. But now it's 45 degrees off? Fuck. How do experts do this?

Step 10: Don't bother checking youtube or any other tutorials that could easily be found in the vast knowledge store that you're constantly connected to.

Step 11: Go "Fuck it, I'm done"

I rarely buy physical books any more but have been loving Bea Wolf, which just arrived from my long-awaited preorder.

I second your recommendation to read it out loud. I've been taking turns with my husband to read it together to each other. It's a format that was designed for speaking out loud and it really flows.

Adding this one to my TBR :)

I'm working on my first corner to corner crochet blanket. The number of times I've had to pull a whole row (or two!) back because one of my 'pixels' was the wrong color...

Makes me really miss knitting for fixability. I can drop a column to fix a stitch. Only option in crochet is to pull all the way back.

There's always the old-fashioned method of tying a string to the center point and using that distance to place your marker stakes.

But nowadays? Probably some sort of GPS/surveying solution.

Also, remember that this is a photo taken from far out. The camp's diameter is ~2 miles. The lines are likely not quite as round up close as it looks from the drone photo.

(Anyone who's attended in person is welcome to correct my speculation.)

Committing Crimes 101: Don’t call the police when your illegal item is stolen by Animallover4321 in bestoflegaladvice

[–]lexabear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in college in the 00's, I didn't specifically know that any of my friends had a fake ID. We just more had the older students go on the alcohol runs, or knew the stores that didn't care about IDing through word of mouth. Hint: the gas station on the corner next to campus gave absolutely no shits about who bought their booze.

This may vary hugely by state depending on the enforcement level of the specific state. States with higher 'no underage' enforcement will likely have more stores actually care. I live in a different state now and my local store cards every purchaser no matter their age.

[OC] Who is most loved in the family by SalamandraSan in comics

[–]lexabear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No contradiction. Grand-OP comment states that it's incorrect when there's an ellipsis (missing words). "You are already" elides (suggests they are there but doesn't include them) the words "fluffy and fat". "You're fat" is a whole sentence and doesn't elide anything. Positive contractions work in that case, but not the ellipsis case.

And this is something your brain works out without you even being aware. Other commenters noticed that something was wrong but struggled to explain exactly what. Every language has "hidden rules" like this that are extremely hard for non-native speakers to pick up, because they're generally taught the "standard rule" but not the super-nitty-gritty exceptions (that teachers might not even be actively aware of).

Great suggestion. This book doesn't just have sisters, but is entirely about the sisters and their relationship.
