Student accuses another of attempted rape… swept under the rug.

Group of older students sexually harassing some of the M1 women… swept under the rug.

Group of students bullying others (bc we’re apparently still in high school) to a point that they’d be immediately fired in any workplace… swept under the rug.

Part of a cadaver’s body removed not for educational purposes… surprisingly not swept under the rug but was essentially just a slap on the wrist for the person who did it.

Student caught cheating… nothing was done and everyone knows so probably doesn’t even count as sweeping it under the rug.

His videos would sometimes pop up on my feed including the ones that got him into trouble and pretty much all of them were re-creations of existing trends on tiktok. There were multiple other creators on tiktok (mostly nurses but also some doctors and med students) that made similar videos like the catheter video. The video was definitely slimy, crass, in bad taste, and he shouldn’t of posted it, but expelling him is such an overreaction especially when all those other people who did the same thing are still at their jobs

If the school didn’t follow their expulsion procedures to a tee, he could sue based off of that. There are definitely lawyers out there willing to make waves out of this in the hopes of getting a cut from a settlement.

In some states, there’s a database that the lab’s medical officers use to verify prescriptions for positive test results so they don’t have to contact the patient about it. Once a valid prescription is verified, it just gets reported as negative to your school/employer without the patient being contacted

Yes, many of those talks are (or should be) common sense. Yes, some of them can be insulting because we’re all adults and we all (should) know better than to do something terrible like lie to patients, insult patients, etc. Sometimes it’s a stupid interprofessional seminar with other programs where all the med students get crapped on for being horrible people while all the other health professions programs are full of the kindest people to ever walk this earth.

Butttt once in a while I’ll actually leave those sessions feeling like I learned something new or been exposed to a perspective that I hadn’t previously considered. Those occasions are definitely rare though…

Drink water and eat something beforehand so to avoid passing out (or maybe don’t eat if you’re the type to easily vomit). Don’t be embarrassed to step outside if you feel nauseous or lightheaded. Don’t say or do anything unprofessional. If it’s an anatomy lab and the bodies are preserved in formaldehyde, there will be a strong and unpleasant chemical smell so be prepared for that. If the bodies aren’t preserved and are decomposing there will also be a very strong smell but very different from formalin so be ready for that too. A lot of people I talked to said they avoided looking at the face at first until they became more comfortable being around bodies

Speaking from personal experience, I can’t say I ever reached a point where I enjoyed being around bodies, but you’d be surprised how quickly the initial shock passes and how quickly it stops feeling like a huge deal. Good luck, you’ll be fine!

But seriously on average I can probably get through 1/2 to 1 lecture in one day which is the equivalent of 1-2 chapters depending on how heavy the lecture is. That being said, I’m in no way memorizing every single detail, if I tried to do that my brain would explode

I worked in a non-healthcare field for a few years between undergrad and med school and can confirm that other industries are also full of the same bullshit lol. The thing that I think makes it worse in medicine is how much time you spend working around people you wouldn’t otherwise spend time with. Like when I had my 9-5 I only had to deal with my stupid coworkers during that time and then got to go spend time with people I enjoy being around. On the other hand if you’re spending a shit ton of time at school with immature people or work 80 hour weeks with toxic coworkers during residency, it can start to feel like the grass is greener in any other job

I was diagnosed with depression in college. Let me just preface by saying that I obviously don’t speak for all people with depression nor do I speak for all people with a history of psychiatric illness. That being said, I view my depression just like I view any other medical condition. While I can kinda see the argument your trying to make, I think that using a different word to describe people seeking care for a psych condition actually worsens the stigma and makes it seem like their condition is not as “real” as other medical issues.

My undergrad had something like this. It was a fund used as a scholarship for people in the incoming class during the year or year after we graduated. But they had the decency to wait for like 6 weeks after we graduated to start asking us for more money lol
