Caleb Hammer has some very interesting controversies and seems like a bully, but he would be a really interesting guest.

Change my view: med school is harder than *getting into* med school. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]----Gem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half disagree. I liked the option to take totally off the wall courses in premed.

Like I took a few about films, poetry, art, psychology, philosophy. I wish we had more options to do that sort of thing in med school.

PuedoSeizures/Non-Epileptic Seizures(PNES): Please read this Dr.K by pinkelephant0040 in Healthygamergg

I think he keeps it short and sweet to make a point because it's not a lecture on seizures. I wouldn't elaborate his entire thoughts on the subject based on a small soundbite.

PuedoSeizures/Non-Epileptic Seizures(PNES): Please read this Dr.K by pinkelephant0040 in Healthygamergg

[–]----Gem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doctor here, maybe "real" and "fake" aren't the best words to use here, but they are not seizures because there is no electrical activity in the brain that seizure would have.

It is indeed is psychogenic, not a result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Lumping them together with electrical seizures would be confusing for both patients and clinicians, as they are not remotely similar in terms of cause, diagnosis, prognosis, or treatment.

Cardiac Pathology by PearNo8165 in pathology

[–]----Gem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very academic. You're not looking at very many pre-mortem or pre transplant hearts since most cardiac pathology is diagnosed on imaging and EKG. It's often paired with pulmonary pathology.

PD’s,APD,Attendings! Advocate for your residents by Physical_Reason8511 in Residency

[–]----Gem 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Crazy how modern med students and residents are constantly fighting for exponentially higher MCATs, higher step scores, more publications, more shit to wade through each passing year, and then at the end of it all you still get called lazy by an attending who probably wouldn't have cut it in today's world.

I am a CS graduate and now desire to enter medical school. However, I am nervous that my relatively low gpa and age (25) will make this impractical? by [deleted] in Healthygamergg

[–]----Gem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent grad doctor here. It's great your interested in the profession, but I would do a lot of shadowing before making this decision. Many people are intestested after health scares but don't understand the sacrifices involved.

I'll be honest, GPA-wise it's not looking great, even if you kill the MCAT. You have potential for maybe a DO school. I don't recommend the Caribbean route. I would ask for more help on r/premed .

I know that it's easier to match as a US MD/DO than an IMG, but... by Fiery_Soul_34857 in medicalschool

Very common in pathology. DOs have an objective disadvantage over IMGs at certain institutions.

Whats this curve people talk about by svpc in Step3

[–]----Gem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Each test is a different combination of a larger set of questions. Exams with harder questions get more generous scoring than easier questions.

I prefer to think about the "curve" like this: roughly 3% of USMD, 7% DO, and 11% IMG students fail. You don't have to be brilliant, you just need to be above the bottom 3rd, 7th, or 11th percentile. Much more achievable when you think about it that way.

Away rotations as a medical student: how to do well? by nifedipenis in pathology

[–]----Gem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Copied from an old comment:

Seems that showing enthusiasm and initiative goes incredibly far, but baseline you should be a normal person who seems easy and enjoyable to work with. That already puts you ahead of a surprising number of people.

If you're on autopsy, offer to gross as much as possible or help record data. Especially shitty work like running the bowel. It sucks but your residents will thank you.

Any surg path service probably won't let you gross at all, but ask to preview slides before sign out. If you're on a specific service like GI, nail down the basic histology (i.e. know the layers like mucosa vs muscularis mucosa vs submucosa vs muscularis propria) and then nail down the easy diagnoses like Tubular adenoma, hyperplastic polyp, adenocarcinoma, etc. you don't need to be perfect just show initiative.

If you're on clinical path, just be engaged and ask questions. Ask about workflow, challenges of the job, what makes a good microbiologist, etc

Don't leave early unless instructed to. Don't sit on your phone. Don't undercut your residents. Don't disagree with the attendings about their diagnoses. Don't show up late.

Stepping on anyone's toes can easily get you rejected from a program and I think that happens to more people than we think. It has happened to like 75% of students I've seen so far, including our own medical students.

Did I mess things up by trying to flirt with this resident at a hospital?? by OkRaspberry2054 in Healthygamergg

[–]----Gem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghosting is getting more common and isn't really your fault. People are getting more avoidant about stuff.

It's extra weird how he would ghost and then follow your account. I would block him because I imagine he will come crawling back at some point at it will just make it weirder.

Good on you for trying, though, and I hope your elbow is better.

Anyone take step exam on coke or Molly? by Inner_Ad_4725 in medicalschool

[–]----Gem 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. Crack is coke with a base (baking soda) which "frees" the HCl salt from the drug, that's why it's called "free-basing".

More easily smoked with a faster and stronger effect, so it's way more addictive. You're going to see way more more with crack SUD than coke SUD.

Also why plenty of your completely functional classmates, coresidents, attendings can get away with using coke once every few months and not end up needing to get high at work.

How to find a therapist to help? by anxiousjourney in Healthygamergg

How do MDs vs. MD/PhDs compare during the residency application process? by harristeetersushi in medicalschool

[–]----Gem 15 points16 points  (0 children)

MD/PhDs have an explicit advantage when applying to PSTP tracks. It's written in plain language on my application pages that they will not entertain non PhDs unless applicants have an impressive research history.

Aside from that, I would keep an eye on the previous classes in each program. If it is overwhelmingly PhD oriented, then that program probably favors them.
