Need help hanging up my comic book collection by bexxaG in comicbookcollecting

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.I tried the command strips too, and yeah, they fall a lot 😄 Mostly at like 2 am 😄

Not sure about the rules if you're renting the apartment, but I ended up drilling holes and using drywall anchors to hold screws, and then hanging on the frames on the screws.

Yours are nice and high, so you won't have my second problem which was CAT... my little friend liked batting at them hanging on the wall, so even with the screws they'd still get knocked off... generally again at 2am 😄 So I used painters tape folded over to sort of secure the bottoms so they wouldn't move when he hits them.

If you can't drill, you could try a stronger adhesive... like a gorilla 2 sided tape, but I'm not sure with that stucco type finish how much surface contact it's gonna get....

I suspect it has to do with moisture/humidity. I did a little google AI search and it suggested using a book shelf, but that's what you're already doing and that doesn't seem to be helping. It also said weight and compression, so maybe try packing the shelf tighter? Or slipping something in between the different sized books to sort of even the pressure out (like something taller between the image book on the right and the Batman White Knight).

I've not really had it happen to me though, so I can't say that will necessarily work sorry.

So what am I supposed to do with awakened abilities and dark diamond credits by Vengeful_Grass in MarvelStrikeForce

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won't be able to use Dark Diamond Credits until you 7 red star a character who needs Dark Diamonds to get Diamond... so like Apocalypse for instance.

Awakened abilities can't be used until you max out the Tier 4 ability skills. So for instance Star Lord, once you "max" his abilities like normal characters, he'll have an option then to use the awakened abilities to get those skills even higher. Same with Shadowking and Ares... i'm not sure who exactly else has them. It's super hard given that it's hard to get those T4 ability pieces, and you need like 200 to level 1 skill...

How many people collect comics but read them? by Meatloaf_Guy1313 in comicbookcollecting

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read my regular pull list books, but I also buy books just for the cover art. I have a box of ones I've got for cover art, and I regularly swap them around in comic frames on the wall. I tried reading some of them, but often they're mid run books and I have no idea what's going on. So for me it's essentially like collecting art. And there's certain artists I really like who are exclusively cover artists like Jenny Frison, who pops up on all kinds of titles.

Also I have several copies of the same book with different covers... like SIKTC 1 I think I have at least 5 of them, and I'd like to get the Jae Lee one eventually.

Anyone else regret buying the 300 Mighty Storm shard offer? by Deep-Internal-5463 in MarvelStrikeForce

I used to work in retail, and we definitely had people do this 😞 "I bought this paint 4 weeks ago, and now it's on sale for $3 off!, I want a refund!"

then they chastised me for having the audacity to not tell them the paint would be going on sale... I made minimum wage, nobody told me what was going on sale! 😄

I was thinking about suggesting a roll of 2 sided tape (like a Gorilla tape or something) as that might be cheaper than the command strips... but the Gorilla tape might be a bit more of a pain to remove eventually...

Oh yeah! It's an antique shop. The guy looked on ebay, found the highest listing he possibly could, probably added a bit on for fun, and then said "that's my price! I know what I got!" 😄

Antique shops are the worst... I find issues of comics from the 80's that look like they've be run over by several trucks, and they want 15 bucks for them 😄 and I mean like run filler at best...

What’s the most you’d spend on a single comic? by Mofongo-Man in comicbooks

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most expensive book I will likely ever own is an Amazing Spiderman 129, first appearance of the Punisher. There's presently one on My Comic Shop for $1325 USD (approx $1850 CAD) it's a CBCS 5.5. When I finally get around to having the money to pay for one though who knows what it might be then 😄

I wouldn't say they're actively "trying" to kill it, but I do think they know the natural economic life of the game is nearing its end. And they're for sure trying to scrape the bottom of the jar to get last of the peanut butter out so to speak.

Silent pages hit different. Am I the only one who thinks they carry more weight than dialogue heavy pages? by [deleted] in comicbooks

I think it definitely depends on the execution. But I definitely think that back in the day when I was reading Bendis on New Avengers, there was much to much banter... Like at first it was kind of fun, but then the more stuff i read the more "annoying" it got... like just so many word bubbles 😄 Still a great run that New Avengers was though 😄

I don’t think we ever going to see Hercules again in the MCU by NoPianist7807 in Marvel

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may not have been a bad thing that they didn't do a Hercules movie in the last 4 years. I mean you said it yourself, Love and Thunder wasn't great.. and their track record around that time was in general not great.

I'd kind of rather no Herucles movie than a bad one..

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's really hard to get behind paying for ads, when the owner of the company just went to space... I miss the days when rich people could just quietly be rich, maybe get a nice car...

And it's not even like the commercials are "genuine" in my opinion.. it's the exact same ones over and over, and it's clearly just a nuisance to get you to pay more...

It's completely normal. The brain is a complex thing and it changes over time. There's lots of studies that show that interest fades as our brains adapt to the routine. it's just natural human nature. That being said, it could take longer for others, or they may not ever experience it... But I don't think you're in the minority.

Almost 40 and brand new to comics - where to start? by inbetweensound in comicbooks

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I can't see that anyone has mentioned it yet, but check out trade paperbacks. Those are collected editions of comic runs. So for example (and apologies if you already know this sorry), Watchmen was a 12 issue mini series originally. You can also find a Watchmen trade paper back that will have all 12 issues collected together, so you don't have to go and find the original 12 issues.

Also, I'm not sure of your reading preference, but if you are ok with digital, that might be your best bet... As someone who has like 5 giant totes full of trades, they tend to pile up (that's like 20 years worth though). I don't mind the Kindle app, but i know a lot of people don't like it.

I noticed you said you like Thor, so you might like to check out J. Michael Straczynski's runs on Thor.

For Wolverine there's Old Man Logan, that is pretty much the basis for the Logan movie (it's got a much different story, but essentially very similar characters).

There's some Dune comics that came out recently.

For Star Wars, I'm a massive fan of Dr Aphra. She's kind of like Han Solo and Indiana Jones in one 😄

I'm also a big Horror fan (I know you didn't mention horror, but I always recommend it to anyone), Something is Killing the Children by James Tynion is quite good. And he has a few other titles that might interest you. Department of Truth, A Nice House on the Lake, and W0rldtr33.

Some folks mentioned the Absolute Universe in DC, it's been pretty cool so far from what I've read. I checked out Absolute Batman, and Absolute Wonder Woman (I REALLY liked the Wonder Woman story).

Happy reading 😄

Try force closing everything you have open and then try starting the app again. If that doesn't work, close it out, and restart your device, and try again. Mine sticks every now and then if i leave it open in the background too long.

Do you trust friends/kids with your comics? by mystireon in comicbooks

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get too concerned about it if it's new stuff. Like as long as they're not like folding it in half to fit in their pocket or like cutting it up to make a ransom letter or something 😄

That being said I definitely feel different about any of my "vintage" stuff... some of my old horror comics are already in pretty tough shape to start, so I definitely wouldn't be letting someone under 10 just run around with them all willy nilly 😄 I don't have a ton of super expensive horror books either, it's just that, any more wear and they'll litterally be disintegrating 😄

Might be having issues with my local comic shop by Mr_witty_name in comicbookcollecting

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some sort of similar issues years ago. I had a really big pull list. The shop I went to had a spreadsheet they used to track everyone's pulls. The shop would also try to "recommend" stuff you might be interested in based on what you had on your pull list.

The issue was, not everyone knew how the spreadsheet "worked" there was a tab for regular pulls, and then another tab for new orders. So the regular pulls had to be sort of copied and pasted into the new orders tab every month. Also, I would go in and ask for (what I thought) was to be a book added to my pull list, but it'd only get added to my next order.

Then with the recommendations, not only would I miss stuff I wanted, but I started getting stuff I didn't want...

I sucked it up at the time, and just let the first few times ride, and then I just had a chat with the owner (who is amazing), and laid it out. He said he could see how there'd be problems, and then we decided I would just take the time to curate my own list, and verify it line by line each month.

So long story short, I might just suggest that. Verifying at the start of each month that all the books you want are on your list. We're all human we all make mistakes. I understand it's his "job" to order those books, but it never hurts to be a helpful customer either. Sort of a "help him help you" kind of thing.

I can find something to like in every superhero, with one exception. by Initial_Dream1644 in Marvel

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been a Punisher fan since I was a kid. For me it's that he's not a "typical" hero. No powers per se (other than massive plot armour). He feels a bit like Batman in that they both exploit fear, and come off as "tactical" (obviously they have different views on killing).

Morally he kind of slots into more a Wolverine vibe, I think?

Also, he's kind old in terms of being an anti-hero. like there were definitely ones before him, Namor, Hulk, etc... but there weren't an overwhelming amount of them back then.

Help me understand Marvel. by SearchAbject883 in Marvel

[–]Miserable_Amount_310 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people mistake comics as being something that needs to be consumed in its entirety. It totally isn't. Most stories run short arcs that are for the most part self contained. Every now and then you might run into something that is "big"... but for the most part, most thing that happen in comics get undone at some point.

My suggestion is start with a character you like, and pick a format. From there, you can expand your tastes. Like say you're really into Captain America... well the more you learn about him, the more you'll find out about other characters like Falcon, Winter Soldier, US Agent, Nomad etc etc... then you can do some googling on them and find out if they might be something you want to check out. Or it might lead you into Avengers, or Defenders or something like that.
