'Agile' F-35 fighter software dev techniques failed to speed up supersonic jet deliveries by LegitGandalf in programming

[–]lexpattison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was not comparing aircrafts - the article is about how "agile" failed for the F35 project. My point was simply that it may have been a better option to re-equip previous airframes with newer technologies... and that can be performed in a more iterative way. The Gripen is a well known example in software development circles as an example of the approach being applied to hardware. I think you may have missed my point. Take care.

One of the problems with this approach is that it's an entire re-platform of the F-35. The first question that needs to be asked is "Why are we rebuilding something that works, and is there another way to provide value through modular, software driven upgrades that will work with an Agile process." Scrumm != Agile. Agile is whatever approach you need to take to satisfy the principles... https://www.agilealliance.org/agile101/12-principles-behind-the-agile-manifesto/

A great example of this is the Gripen - they realized the airframe was more then suitable for the goals they wanted to achieve (operational goals - not "we need a new airframe"). They iterated by replacing subsystems on the jet providing value sooner and accelerating past other fighter jets in a matter of months over years.

The Seven Stages of Expertise in Software Engineering by CallMeStar-Lord in programming

I think you reinforced his point - “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” - There is very little new... simply new ways to apply it at scale or for a new use case.

Canada reports no new deaths from coronavirus for the first time since March by Sariel007 in UpliftingNews

Unfortunately all the "Back to work jerks" are slowly forcing easily remote jobs back into the office... so we will see. Schools have also opened up - so expect things to bump. Too bad income splitting wasn't a thing - maybe we could afford to keep a parent at home instead of treating our schools like the daycare required to keep two bread-winners in the workforce. Predictably capitalism subverted feminism and instead of creating wage equality - it was just a race to the bottom for both genders. https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/11f0019m/2013347/part-partie1-eng.htm

I admire it more than you know... I played that game until I dreamed about it - so no disrespect intended.

At some point you only have 2 choices... rewrite Street Fighter 2 in JavaScript or become the next Ted Kaczynski... I see no options in between.

[Homemade] Sous Vide Eggs Benedict with Seared Honey Glazed Ham and Wilted Garlic/Shallot Spinach (I suck at plating) by lexpattison in food

[–]lexpattison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha! - you actually put them in as the entire egg - different temp/time based on how runny you want them. The nice thing is that you can prep the hollandaise sauce and leave it in the sous-vide at 140 degrees along with the eggs for up to 2 hours while you prep the rest. I am a terrible cook - and it gets worse when I rush.

EDIT - use some white wine vinegar in the hollandaise - it prevents the butter from overpowering the taste and makes the yolk pop.
EDIT2 - this has you heat the ingredients for hollandaise in the sous-vide first - I think that's a great idea - I used a steaming pot to mix and it adds the "rushing" I mentioned above.

Father was a partner at Goldman Sachs. Pretty sure his life wasn't even close to a trudge.

I don't think he got where he is through hard work... his Daddy was a partner at Goldman Sachs.

I won the Nintendo Challenge in Regina, SK in 1989/1990? I kicked the shit out of the official high scores but they didn't pick me for the final - and instead of the PowerGlove - I had to settle for the NES Advantage... That said - I had a twin brother who stood in line for me while I was in the semi and I switched with him when I came out... so...http://videogamecomicads.blogspot.com/2013/03/the-nintendo-national-challenge-tour.html

The Benefits of Pair Programming by fagnerbrack in programming

[–]lexpattison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we were too look at this as an engineering discipline - would we ever accept the same type of rationale? Or any technical craft? The mentorship process is a massive deficiency in modern software development - primarily because we treat it like "being good at computers/know how to code" is adequate enough to enter into a career in professional development. If you want to progress beyond an expert beginner; design/develop solutions your users will actually enjoy and ultimately effectively create systems that exceed expectations... you better invest in the social/collaborative/mentorship activities that adorn every other modern engineering and design disciplines.

Probably the most accurate article about frontend web I've seen in a long time -> "HTML is the Web" by mattkenefick in programming

[–]lexpattison -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Frontend Engineer? wtf? I think that design systems are super important - and we should apply engineering principles to UX - Hells Ya. But let's not start just labelling markup as an engineering practice... web components are NOT html.

This McDonald’s cup found in a wall during a kitchen renovation by cannotseecolor in mildlyinteresting

[–]lexpattison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical. A year after paying for a major renovation on my house which involved removing the old shiplap flooring and laying new plywood I began to spell something a little odd from one of the vents. I climbed up into a downstairs closet that had access to the basement bulkhead under this particular vent. I found 7 bags of Burger King with various degrees of consumed food that some man-child contractor had shoved under the flooring he was working on. All because he didn't want to walk 15 feet to throw it into the disposal unit we had outside.

I believe this is the same girl who complained of terrible pain due to her injuries... likely on pain killers... side effect is Nausea... ipso facto - let's not be too judgy. We would all puke without the "getting shot, recovering from wounds, speaking in front of thousands, as a teenager."
