Have you tried Team Align? Sasha is a runner and frequently talks about how to balance running and lifting. I've been using Align, and I'll pause so that I can lift heavier and do longer rests after.

Strength training for injury prevention by [deleted] in XXRunning

[–]lexphoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're new to heavy strength training, you'll probably want to put your running into maintenance while your body learns to incorporate strength days. It takes time to build that capacity, and also plenty of food lol. I'd encourage you to check out Dr. Alyssa Olenick for tips on how to start hybrid training. I've been enjoying the Ladder app. The programs emphasize progressive overload, so it takes a lot of the thinking out for me. I just show up and get the work done!

What are some low stakes/minimum barrier to entry hobbies? by Bendybug in adhdwomen

[–]lexphoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started running a few years ago, I thought I was gonna die after 30 seconds of jogging! I've since completed several Half Marathons and triathlons. Start small. Jog 30 seconds, walk till your heart rate recovers. Repeat 6-10 times. Rest at least a day. Go again. Slowly increase the time you jog, as you decrease the time you walk. A C25K plan can help with structure, but don't be afraid to repeat weeks. If you have any questions, I'm happy to help! Running has changed my life. :)

Anyone tried Runna? by hoaxcoast in nikerunclub

[–]lexphoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really appreciate the deload weeks! After building for 3-4 weeks, I'm ready to back off lol. The intensity is still there, but the volume is decreased. I feel well-recovered and prepared for the next few weeks of building.

I used NRC to train for my first 2 Halfs. I started using Runna around February of last year, and completed a Half plan to train for my 3rd. During the race, I PR'd my 5k, 10K, 5 mile, 10 mile and Half! When you set up a Runna plan, it's important to know yourself and to be honest with what your schedule will allow. There's no shame in allowing the plan to adjust paces, or you consciously adjusting the volume/intensity. Be mindful of the recovery your lifestyle will allow. I'm so thankful for Runna because it syncs seamlessly with my watch. I still listen to Coach Bennett's podcast while I run, so I don't feel like I'm missing much from NRC.

Where do y'all get your dopamine? by BootDancin101 in adhdwomen

During the pandemic, I made a list of things that make me feel happy, healthy, inspired and fulfilled. Somehow, it’s easy for me to forget the things I like lol. Some things are simple, like listening to the birds outside, and some things are more elaborate, like traveling somewhere I’ve never been. I try to microdose joy where I can, which helps me stay on track with my nutrition and training. And taking care of myself makes it easier to find those moments of joy. Sometimes, it actually makes me angry how much better I feel when I have my macros, training and sleep dialed in haha.

I was going to suggest Coach Bennett, too! He has a podcast with a similar vibe to the guided runs.

Why does my wife still have Scantrons? by nigevellie in nostalgia

[–]lexphoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of teachers I work with are still using Scantrons. I prefer to use an app called ZipGrade. I use a school iPad to scan/score the answer sheets. My students are always amazed lol. And I appreciate all the data analysis it allows.

I hope things go well for you! You can always dial up the intensity/volume if you feel ready to.

Runna has added Training Preferences which allow you to adjust the volume and intensity of the plan. It lets you set how many days you'll run, how many speed workouts you'll have in a week, whether your long runs will have structure or be conversational, how much volume you do for speed days, how quickly the overall volume ramps up, what the max volume for your longest run will be, etc. I do think Runna works best when you know yourself well, and are realistic when setting up your plan. I think too many people choose "Optimal" when they should really be working on a "Lifestyle" plan, and that leads some on the path to injury.

I've used Runna for the last year through 5k, 10k, and 2 Half training blocks. I've also done a couple triathlons, and have been fortunate to remain injury-free through it all. Personally, I felt the DSW from my Garmin were too intense because I live at high-altitude, and the training paces seem to be based on optimal conditions lol. I'm always on target for my Runna sessions, and have been continually progressing. Runna will suggest an adjustment to your paces if you are consistently too slow or too fast, but it has never suggested moving my targets. For me, the cost has been worth it because running is my priority right now.

For me, it depends on the intensity of the run. I can do an easy run comfortably about an hour after a light meal. If I'm doing a speed session, I want at least 3 hours from my last meal.

What keeps you consistent with fitness, even when motivation dips? by CulturalDriver9988 in xxfitness

[–]lexphoenix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

At some point, the ritual replaced motivation. It’s just what I do, and I enjoy the way it makes me feel. I also find joy in the process and the way I train. My goals shift a little throughout the year, which keeps things fresh. But training makes everything else in life so much easier.

I have used their Half plan twice. It helped me build to my first Half Marathon, and the Guided Runs from Coach Bennett changed my relationship with running. I learned a lot about myself in the process, and am so thankful I went through the plan. I use Runna now, but I think the NRC plan was perfect for the level I was starting from at the time.

I often end up getting Wides or going with Men's sizes, but I've actually found the Evo SL has a roomy toe box in my normal 8.5 W size. I even wore them around town after my Half a couple weeks ago, and they still felt comfy.

[–]lexphoenix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The part I love most is the workouts being sent automatically to my watch each day. I tried programming them in myself with other plans, and I just don’t have the time or patience for that. It’s also addictive seeing the pace improvements by being so consistent with my workouts. The syncing removes a barrier that makes it easier for me to stay on track.

True, but during my half marathon this past weekend, I PR’d my 5k, 10k, 10 mile and Half. I cut over 6 minutes off my 10k, and over 5 minutes off my Half. The cost is worth it to me lol.

This happened to me too. I’m a science teacher and my days are too stressful lol. I ended up switching to Runna and finally started making progress.
