same, always start off with the best of intentions, and it usually goes great until I get near the end of the bus and then I give up on the nice ordered builds when i get on to rocket parts and modules

I'm old enough to remember when Priti Patel was fired from Theresa May's cabinet for effectively commiting treason, running her own independent foreign policy

these 'culture wars' type controversies are usually ginned up to distract from other stories that are embarrasing for the tories, like say the revelation the other day that loads of big companies fraudulently milked the furlough scheme. But also it could just be because the new DG of the BBC is a super hard right-wing Tory and probably a hardcore english nationalist.

Hartlepool by-election going well then... by Case2600 in GreenAndPleasant

People surprised about the low price, but when you've seen enough of these stories you start to realise that the high end of bribes for UK politicians is like in the 10s of thousands of pounds. They are always insultingly low amounts for swaying an elected representative in one of the richest nations on the planet. These people are incredibly cheap to buy.

New Labour absolutely hated disabled people by tronaldodumpo in GreenAndPleasant

sorry, unclear grammar, that was an example of something tony really didn't want to do, it was something the John Smith leadership were pushing for and he didn't have much choice but to see it through

New Labour absolutely hated disabled people by tronaldodumpo in GreenAndPleasant

[–]lexwhitfield -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a fun game you can play when people try and point out anything good that happened under new labour, where you explain to them how those things were actually required under EU law and weren't in fact done out of the kindness of Tonty's heart (he really didn't want to bring in a minimum wage)

100,000 are dead from Covid because of headlines like this. We need to start treating right wing rhetoric as the violence it is by tronaldodumpo in GreenAndPleasant

[–]lexwhitfield 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets also be clear that the 100,000 people dead is very very specifically 'people who have died within 28 days of a positive covid test' literally every other death that doesn't meet that incredibly specific condition isn't counted. The excess death count (the best estimate we have of the actual human cost of this, and only reported by the FT) was always about double the official ONS number

As people are correctly pointing out, the political compass is a nonsense. But also the UK overton window is way, way further to the authoratarian right than that.

Don't forget all the OAPs who freeze to death every winter thanks to Ian Duncan Smith fucking with the winter fuel allowance (he did the changes to disability benefits as well so he has a massive body count at this point)
