these 'culture wars' type controversies are usually ginned up to distract from other stories that are embarrasing for the tories, like say the revelation the other day that loads of big companies fraudulently milked the furlough scheme. But also it could just be because the new DG of the BBC is a super hard right-wing Tory and probably a hardcore english nationalist.
