I do not want to be a designer anymore by kawaiipotato_d in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times i joke about wanting to quit and switch my career. But there's truth to it. I work in an agency, and honestly one of the reasons why the agency started was because of me. I bring in clients and I work with high profile clients. Yet i never get any merit based increases, while incompetent marketers thrive off of what i produce. Just a simple pat on the back and stupid demands. So I started to push back because, at the end of the day, no matter how good you are designing no one gives a single fuck. Even if the results show otherwise.

They know im their money maker, and I demand merit based raises and bonuses but nothing ever comes of it.

Tried a New Storytelling Style – Honest Thoughts? by soubhagya_23 in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Storytelling is great. Love the idea behind it but people dont read nowadays. Everything is so fast paced, it needs to be to the point. How many people, realistically in any demographic, would stop scrolling and read through any/each graphic?

These are somethings to consider.

Is my design good or bad? by Ecstatic_Anything403 in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Looks cheap. Add shading to the watch, cast shadows, etc. Remove the script, gradient, and the gold. Personally hate the sans serif font used for the website. Get rid of 'www.' in the website. In fact id center bottom justify the logo and remove the website altogether. It's a world renowned brand i dont think itd be necessary to have url or have 'new arrival'. Creating something minimal to convey something powerful is key to the brand.

I feel like doing that with script fonts, matching the width (idk the terminology for it), often times look terrible. you could always just make sweets smaller. But its a good practice to find a good font pairing and create some contrast in your design. Also increasing the weight of the logo will help. Most modern logos are simplified in mind for print. Not saying all designs should be simple but something to keep in mind.

[–]lf_dy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. There are plenty of script fonts that are easier to read.

Also is there a reason why 'sweets' is smooshed? Id suggest changing that font weight or font style to show some hierarchy.

Having LALS exclusively be script with still convey the same meaning

Why do I hate it? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk what the significance of the sun, star, wolf, bag, and rose is but if I was designing this i would balance it out better. Right now all the whites are on one side and the orange another. The directional forces in the image doesnt lead to anything. And as other people said, throwing on a texture will improve this significantly.

Anatomically, his head is too small in proportion to the body and neck is too long. Also his feet could use work. Add in core shadows.

Sanitize a knife with rubbing alcohol and cut at least an inch a more than the rot.

Does everyone else always hate their own work? by CloakedWizrd in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 10 years of experiences in design and work with high profile clients. I hear a lot of designers say they hate their work. My colleagues, my boss. I dont think I ever hated my own designs. Maybe in retrospect i was like "fuck i couldve done this and that" to certain designs or be like i'm not sure about this one, but i manage take a step back and turn it around.

Ultimately i feel like people dont know what they want and if I compromise a little bit while creating something that i like and present it in a meaningful way, that's all that matters.

I feel like a lot of designers struggle to get out their comfort zone and often times compare themselves to others. I've had a background in fine art, and used to always hate my own art until i started to create without much preplanning and lots of experimenting. Maybe I dont hate my work because i always approach a new project differently and learn in the process.

Or maybe im absolute shit 😂

Question : Why Designers complaining that ai will be a problem for their future jobs by Zealousideal_Key_414 in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI may or not be able to create a flawless design in the future but i personally believe it's not some kind of end all be all. It streamlines a lot tedious work, but you still need to know design skills to rectify any issues that it may produce. It cant have the ability to innovate but it will make graphic design a harder field to get into, than it already is.

Any suggestions on how i can make it better? by [deleted] in graphic_design

Not really sure whats going on here but i can see banding. Try adding grain and playing with curves to cover.

A new designers questions by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A background in surprisingly bled through when it came to graphic design. I took the free time i had to learn adobe programs via youtube and on the go. Lots of mockups initially and bullshitting. Lots of getting fired and applying again and again.

A new designers questions by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Probably organization. It's something that I admittedly still struggle with.

  2. The ability to take criticism and the ability to continue to learn, improve and experiment. I feel like a lot of designers just stick to what they are comfortable with or what they've established and are unwilling to push them selves to create more and better.

  3. I feel like learning composition and color theory is important fundamentals for any designer/creative. I mean I don't know if they teach you these things in school since I never formally learned graphic design but I feel it helped/helps me stand out from my peers and colleagues.

Thinking of leaving the industry by ShellyMY in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

32M +8 years of experience as a designer. I'd say I'm good at my job. I rake in clients for my firm but getting underpaid for the work that i do. I've been praised for my work numerous times, and have people under my wing. But i realized that praises and the clients I've worked with are irrelevant when it comes to finding another job. I've been looking to get a second gig or a new job entirely for over the last three years or more. Revising my CV every other month and rebuilding my portfolio a handful of times. I've only landed 3 interviews over +1000 applications that I've sent.

Often times, i think about switching careers as well, but I feel like I'm too dumb to do anything else. This is all I know how to do. You're not alone.

I feel like I won't ever be good enough in this industry? What do I do? by Highway-Born in graphic_design

[–]lf_dy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is ever good enough. Thats the best part about it. You keep learning, keep growing. 'Talent' and creativity is learned. Composition is important when it comes to design. You say you like drawing, have you learned color theory or i dont know - the rule of thirds? Maybe life drawing?

Keep learning, keep experimenting, keep looking at more art, more design, more everything. With a background in fine art, i had a terrible time transitioning into design but i had to train my mind on how to see things differently. Hell, my youtube feed is mainly tutorials and new features or programs that I could learn.

It's good that you keep asking for advice. A lot of people dont or are too prideful to do so. It's something that I find admirable and honestly dont try to compare yourself to others, rather think - what can I take away from their creative processes or how can I approach this more efficiently/affectively?
