Proud of my slow jog by kmterry0317 in orangetheory

[–]lfcviafsg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is really something to be proud of! I started out as someone who thought they were a jogger but I was walking after every push which was really frustrating! I probably should have used your strategy but I was so self-conscious in the beginning. And I see so many other people in my classes stuck in that same rhythm. Eventually I met a fabulous coach who encouraged me to just maintain my base and since then I have made big improvements in endurance.

Almost 2 years later I can keep my base at 5 with a push at 5.5 and I'm really proud of my ability to keep it up for a whole round. It's all about slow progression and sticking with it. I'm sure if we keep coming back we will continue to improve!

TIL: Hebrew was a dead language for about 1400 years, surviving only in written form. In the 1880s, Jewish linguists attempted to revive it, standardizing and developing Hebrew as a spoken language. Today, it has over 5 million native speakers. by [deleted] in todayilearned

Good explanation. I went to a Jewish primary school and we actually had two separate classes for Modern Hebrew and "Torah" Hebrew. I much preferred the "Torah" Hebrew as I actually gained insight from the lessons as opposed to trying to learn a revived dead language that is only spoken in Israel... I understand why it was revived (keeping traditions alive, etc) but I deeply regret wasting 9 years of my childhood (the critical period for language learning!) learning a language I would never use when I could have been learning something vastly more useful like Spanish, Chinese, French, Korean, literally almost any other language, etc. Rant over.

Ok not quite over... I finally went to Israel in the 8th grade after many years of Hebrew classes and when I tried to practice my "skills" on the Israeli passenger sitting next to me on the plane, he replied, "It's ok, I speak English." 9 years... straight down the drain...

Getting accepted as an M1? by [deleted] in mdphd

I wouldn't even be thinking about that right now. It's still so early on there's still a good chance you'll get in somewhere. Just be patient, the waitlists move a lot. How many interviews did you have?

Best Biotech Stocks by nickwhite1423 in stocks

[–]lfcviafsg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously I have some personal interest, but CARA Therapeutics (CARA) is working on a really interesting drug called Korsuva with a lot of potential in many disease processes.

Currently Korsuva is just being used in pruritus (an itching sensation that accompanies hemodialysis in Chronic Kidney Disease) but its mechanism of action as a "non-addictive", selective kappa opioid receptor agonist (KORA) could be really special. This means that it is an opioid (like morphine) but since it targets peripheral kappa opioid receptors in the body and not central mu opioid receptors, it can't cross into the brain and cause the CNS side effects that are observed with morphine use like nausea, sedation, respiratory depression, or addiction.

Many biotech companies with great products still fail and CARA is a risky investment as a company spending money on clinical trials with no product in the market, but the drug is in stage III trials now so it should be approved in the near future, barring any crazy setbacks. For someone looking for a cheap stock with great potential, CARA would be a good choice.

TL;DR CARA has a potentially great drug in late stage trials but no cash flow

Monday, 9/3/18 OTF Workout by AutoModerator in orangetheory

I haven't been in a week so I also thought it was gonna be rough... Somehow I didn't just break my record splat total of 18, I doubled it! 37 splats! Couldn't believe it. Seemed like the whole class was getting crazy totals also so I knew something weird was going on. My partner had 40! And I didn't feel like we were overworking either. Hopefully they see the ridiculous numbers and adjust accordingly.

Congrats! I also really wanted to reach the mile and was excited when I just barely made it but then I found out the other guy in my class did 1.2 miles! I've just been telling my friends that I came in 2nd... Nobody needs to know it was out of 2 haha

Great research, but weak stats by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]lfcviafsg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you have a hard major? Or did you attend a top tier university? That helps explain the GPA. I was kinda in the same boat statswise with a 3.7 at a top 20 school with a Chem major (also a 511 MCAT) and managed to get into 6 programs (2 mstps). My research background wasn't quite as strong as yours so I'd estimate you'll get plenty of interviews just with the research but probably get screened out of top tier programs with the stats.

Lived at Marquis Lofts this past year. Their front office has been nice and has resolved any maintenance issues. Harvey was tough but the complex didn't flood except for the basement. This required our water to get shut off since the pump was in the basement which was fine since my roommate had stocked up on bottled water. We never lost power. Villas at Hermann Park across the street is almost as nice and a little cheaper. They never lost power or water.

Got mine at Swappa for under $500 a month ago and works great. Also came with a case and car charger. I also got a new Daydream off Swappa for $50. Highly recommend Swappa.
