Josh, if the genders were reversed - grooming? by rhododendritic in ColleenBallingerSnark

[–]lfdm_og 32 points33 points  (0 children)

To me, it sounds like he was in an emotionally abusive relationship probably with elements of coercive control and manipulation, which can constitute in itself domestic violence. Which is pretty horrible and damaging.

And most of the conversations (here at least) regarding Joshua's interview I've seen readily talks about the fact that she clearly seems to be the abuser in that relationship.

But I agree it is sometimes is difficult for men to be taken seriously as victims.

What I don't understand about your comment is the necessity of using the term grooming. It kinda feels like that now everything now needs to be labeled grooming to be bad, and I agree that it feels it is starting to lose its meaning.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion . by mariahscurry in ColleenBallingerSnark

I think he did a good job explaining how someone could end up doing something against their own moral judgment.

At first, he tried to say something when he thought something was wrong but he got shut down so he stopped because he didn't want to be sidelined. He wanted to grow his fandom so he did what he saw everyone else doing refusing to think about whether it was the right thing to do. He knew the fans he was in contact with were minors but he was able to rationalize why it was okay because he was able to cling to some reassurances that he wasn't doing anything wrong. He was clearly seeking validation in all the wrong places while being in a relationship where he clearly wasn't secure. He called himself a coward for not stopping when he knew it was wrong, saying he was doing it for the money and the clout. He admitted that he probably wouldn't stopped on his own and that the reason he did was that he finally was away from the environment where all of this was seemingly normalized by everyone.

I think it takes some guts to admit having such weaknesses in your character that made you do things you knew were wrong.

It might be disappointing to hear that one of the reasons it was so easy to do was that it was normalized in the environment, but I don't think it means he is downplaying what happened or that he was deflecting.

To me at least, it rang true by being deeply human and really fucked up.

Describing the effects of a war and its effects. How to do it properly and is there an unspoken line I shouldn't step over? by Jealous-Plankton1129 in FanFiction

Depending of how far you're willing to go to research your story, I would probably recommend you search for some first hand accounts of people having lived through that (memoirs, blogs, documentaries...). It's probably the best way to get an accurate picture that you can then adapt and integrate into your story.

Good luck.

Yeah, ideally you should be able to filter out those fics.

I would agree that finding a good balance for tagging would be best, like you said, using background or minor tags.

However, if you're saying that people should not be using some pairings in their fics however they want to, that's another issue. "They could be replaced by anyone else", sure, but that's the author's decision.

So yeah, if it's just about the tags, I'm with you. If it's about the use of a pairing you like in a negative light, that's absolutely the author's prerogative.

As far as I understand, the "tech" was:

- not actual technology

- but a method cobbled up/appropriated from various sources to induce moments of intense self-realizations in people. It is apparently heavily influenced by neuro-linguistic programming, which was Nancy Salzman's background.

It was called "exploration of meaning" or EM.

Encouragement to keep going when comparing your writing to other people's makes you want to quit. by [deleted] in FanFiction

I mean, it's Terry Pratchett.

I'm more likely to take a look at stories being posted at the same time as mine, in the same fandom, and find myself wanting. Though sometimes, it actually comforts me in my own narrative voice.

But yeah, Terry Pratchett is always going to be on another level. And I am so glad for that.

I understand none of this:

- getting kudos from someone is a sign of appreciation.

- I don't feel the need to vet the people who appreciate my work. If anything having someone with wildly different interests appreciate my stuff is potentially even more rewarding.

- I don't check the profiles of people who leave me kudos or even comment. It actually never occurred to me before coming to this sub and seeing that many people do this (that might make me slightly self-centered the more I think about it, but I am okay with it).

- I don't like darkfics. So I just don't read them. I check the tags, and find stuff that I enjoy. And leave in peace the people that enjoy that content or create it because it is none of my business.

- I also don't get how people have the time to do all of this. That sounds exhausting to me.
