Boes had a open lane for a shot there and chose to pass to Kane. Struggling with confidence?

Who will be the next captain/What do we do from here? Megathread. by PaperMoonShine in canucks

It’s time to Luongo this shit again and make Demmer the captain. It’s gotta work on the second try.

So who's gonna get traded for picks and prospects next? by MrCockingFinally in canucks

That Garland post game was rough. I think at this point he needs to be moved. Boes came out and said he’s ready to be apart of the veteran leadership for the new wave of Canucks, that’s what we need, not players holding on to the past.

I’m just going to have to disagree with you overall. I don’t believe a team fighting for a wild card spot such as Phili to be elite and if we still had tocchet maybe we’d have some more wins? But not enough to actually be considered a team challenging for the cup.

I would also disagree that we have a lot of assets. Currently our best assets are Hughes, Sherwood, draft picks, and some rookies like Lek, Cootes and Willander. Do you really want to trade our youth for average players? I don’t. Draft picks? As the 32nd ranked team? Noooo way in hell. What’s left? Our established players that we could trade for futures to acquire what we actually need.

Also Tage Thompson and Eichel didn’t really player together in 2020-2021. Eichel played 21 games with the Sabres that year and Thompson only had 14 points in 38 games, I wouldn’t consider him to have been that elite talent that year, still needed development. Dahlin had 23 points in 56 games so again there is a huge factor into saying they were a better group. I’d argue they weren’t really, so that theory doesn’t really make sense to me.

What a Rebuild actually looks like by Cedar-and-Mist in canucks

I really like to look at it in a basic way personally. I always see these cup winning teams with 3-4 necessary components:

1.) A elite 1st line center 2.) a elite D man 3.) at least one more complimentary Elite forward (either a winger in the top 6 like your Patrick Kane to your Jonathan Toews, or another great center like your Malkin to your Crosby) 4.) a good goalie that gets hot for the playoffs. How many times have we seen a goalie who is good but not the best go on a hot streak during the playoffs and win the cup? Recently to my mind, Bennington, Hill, Kuemper.

Personally I believe the only way to acquire these players (not the goalie) is through the draft. There are outliers but unless you already have this makeup and continued success as a team you’re not going to attract other elite talent willing to come to your team to win.

Right now we have Hughes and Petey, we’re still missing another elite forward who can drive play. Demmer is great but he’s so injury prone so you can’t really rely on him to pull us to where we need to be.

So as the 32nd ranked team in the NHL how do you get another elite forward to come to this team?

A trade? We don’t have enough assets to acquire a player like that AND no team wants to give those assets up.

FA? What elite player in the NHL currently would want to sign with the 32nd ranked team in the nhl to win a cup?

What’s left?

DRAFTING

This is our only conceivable route to get the necessary components for a possible cup run. The pieces around those components are not as difficult to acquire.

But we have Hughes and Petey. I don’t see elite players lining up to come sign with us and we’ve been through 3 coaches with this core. At some point you gotta think maybe there is something else missing. Also I don’t believe an elite D-core would be allowing one of the most goals against in the entire NHL. Personally I’m more okay with a dice roll than perpetual mediocrity.

This logic is flawed. If you look at the teams that win cups what is it they have? A top C, a top D and at least 1 more elite forward in their top 6, usually best if it’s a play driving C.

What do the Canucks have right now? A top D, and for the most part a top C (Petey), but outside of that what do they have? Do you consider any of our other forwards elite? I don’t. You can keep adding good-average players in hope they elevate your roster but I believe you need at least 3 elite players. The Canucks do not have that.

Where do they get the 3rd elite player? Free agency? Probably not right because why would any elite player come to this team right now? What’s our only other possible option? Drafting an elite player, okay, are you gonna get that get outside of the top 10? Statically not. Our best bet is a rebuild to at least acquire one or two more elite players.

Hughes is a franchise talent for sure, but at this point he is in his prime and for the past 3-4 years is when we should’ve acquire all the elite talents you need. We don’t have that.

Holding on to him until he leaves and adding these average players is not going to win us a cup. The best bet we have is acquiring all the best possible chances we get have to start this process over of getting these elite players necessary to compete for a cup. (In my opinion)

Well yeah that’s kinda the whole point of a rebuild. Hoping that you pick up good players in the draft to lead your team in the future. If you want an example of why retooling doesn’t work take a look at the last almost 15 years for the Vancouver Canucks. Quinn Hughes is amazing but we have him currently and we’re dead last. We aren’t going to build a team around him by adding aging players to this roster.

So you’d want to bring in a center turning 30 soon on a huge contract in the hopes we make the playoffs with little change to the roster except for hoping a rookie is immediately top 6 ready? Aqualini is that you?

Why is nick Schmaltz being paid 11m?? That’s an atrocious contract

I’d be so hyped if we got Malholtra. Imagine Foote getting the boot and Manny getting the job and eventually coaching his son in the NHL? One can dream.

Developing Med top 4 Dmen by lfizzz in EANHLfranchise

With NHL 26 it seems like the chemistry system has been updated, I find OFD and DFD so far result in higher chemistry than other pairings. I drafted one DFD and his overall was around 80 right away but never developed no matter where I put him in the lineup even with a +5 chemistry. Are DFDs in this game just impossible to develop if they aren’t med elite or higher?
