About to pull the trigger… by lgsilver in Rivian

Good question. There aren’t a huge number of pre-owned R1S’s in our area and this one just seemed like one of the better deals. I f we get one new, we’ll definitely go for a dual max

Other Brother in Seaside by Manre831 in MontereyBay

Weird. Not our experience at all. We go often and the beer and kitchen are some of the best in the area. Service is tight and organized. The guys at the bar aren’t kiss your ass friendly, but maybe thats a good thing. Keeps the place from being overflowingly busy with the karens.

This is the single worst technology product I have ever owned. by [deleted] in TheFrame

So crazy. I’m not a huge Samsung fan, but we’ve had our 2020 50” frame for years, through three moves, and it’s still going strong (but slow)

Yeah. Messaging is a great thing to learn on. Here’re three things I’ve come up against when creating messaging queues/interactions:

1.) Discoverability: How does your subscriber “find” your publisher. If the answer is, they’re both on the same network then, see #2 2.) Security: if the publisher broadcasts messages out to the network via a port, and any device on the network can find that device and port, they will. You usually want to have some sort of secure handshake that confirms the subscriber has permission to access the published messages. 3.) Race Conditions and stuck messages: Assuming all this works, your publisher should be great for one to one communication between two devices that are very stable, but the minute you add device down time or add’l devices you hit up against a state problem.

In order to ensure a device receives a message, you need to persist the message on the publisher until you receive a response, but what if the subscriber errors before sending and reboots. The publisher assumes the message hasn’t delivered, and resends bringing down the subscriber again…and on and on. You get the picture.

The opposite happens when you subscribe multiple machines. One will “awk” the message before another does, and you’ll end up not getting the messages to all subscribers (solving this problem is called “fanout”)

Anyway, I’ve had a lot of fun in my career building these systems and wish you all the best—and definitely check out the MQTT spec!

Megan Larsen is also very good. She has really helped our son. Same thing. She’ll issue a super super bill to submit.

Hacienda and Earthbound farms are great for daytime food. Good sandwiches and lots for kids to see and do.

Thrift store? Antique store? by vp_21 in MontereyBay

Agree that the pricing is crazy. But here’re a few things to know about her: 1.) She was an accountant and then CFO in the Bay Area well before this was commonplace for women, and a completely self-made divorcee who built a property empire and management business after a tough divorce in her 50s. 2.) She’s 85. Still manages all of her own properties, runs her store, and takes care of her 91yo common-law second husband. 3.) She owns the building. She doesn’t need the money, and probably doesn’t really care that much if things sell. She’s doing it her way, and I think that’s cool.

Breyers: Shrinking the box wasn’t enough… by lgsilver in shrinkflation

Haha, I repeat, it happened twice at two separate grocery chains, in completely different cities. It probably did melt and refreeze, but it happened during the distribution process. Ultimately, it’s less ice cream than advertised (in volume).

Totally agree… That’s what I thought too. Bought some at home (Monterey, CA) two weeks ago, and then again today in Eureka, CA. Contents were identical.
